Where would you tune for huge breaking news information? (9/11 or storm type)

In todays radio world, where would you tune to get news coverage about a major catastrophe?
My first stop would be my local station 95.9 WATD

WBZ --- no question, hands down. Even way up here in Maine, it would be the first place I would go.
Then I would follow it up with Maine Public Radio, which of course links to NPR. Maine has only two commercial stations with decent news coverage, WGAN in Portland (ABC) and WZON in Bangor (NBC). Both stations have significant local news staffs. They would probably break in quickly as well.

I love WATD! I would probably start there if it had a real local impact.

But this being the 21st century, I have access to the internet and get the same AP, Reuters, BBC news tickers that they get.

Once I learn of the major event, unless I need to report to a local shelter or something, I would go to the talk stations.

WRKO, WTKK, WXTK, etc..

The topic of breaking news is an interesting one. Radio has a BIG advantage over TV in this case.
TV needs video packages, they need writers to edit copy from the news feeds, and other production aspects that do nothing but slow down the flow of information.

A station like WBZ gives you the same info every 10 minutes. I would rather listen the first time, then discuss it until new news pops up.

Which is OK for traffic and weather, but it causes the rest of the coverage to be almost as superficial as the few sentences of news you get on 680 and 96.9. Long gone are the great days with Len Lawrence and Jim Pansulo on WEEI. Get off my lawn.

First Choice WBZ 1030am
Second WRKO 680am (If only they had LIVE programming at night-Example: Savage is supposed to be on 6pm-9pm LIVE, and .....in that way, they could then put on Rusty Humpries 9pm-Midnight (then everything will be LIVE weekdays) That way you can now what's going on in the world NOW rather then a delay. If it has to mean cut Howie's show for one hour do it. because the average listenner to Savage won't know it's on a delay (7pm-10pm, and they won't know that Jerry Doyle is a delay from 3pm earlier from that day) Know what I mean? If some big news, or event happened at 4pm, and Jerry Doyle Show talks about it, you won't hear it until 11pm at night. You know? Where's if you have Rusty Humpries on 9pm-Midnight, that is LIVE at that time (here in Boston area-9pm eastern time-Midnight that show is LIVE) You all probibly think different, but in reality, it's true with average listenners. Program Management has to think about the average listenner.
and Third 96.9

Cut an hour of Howie's show? No because Howie is local and it's a crucial daypart and they pay him big money and they have advertisers who want to advertise on a local show during drive time. You may see live programming at night soon in one way--with the election coming up don't be too surprised if Joe Battenfeld does a weekly or even daily shift at 7 pm (they did that a couple yrs ago on Fridays)
Look there are certain ways to make money in radio including good LOCAL talent, appealing to a good demo, etc. Cutting Howie's last hour for---Savage? If you suggested that to Wolfe you would get laughed out of his office.

I want you to look at the highways between 6-7 pm. You will notice a lot of people are still out there.
They would want to hear local stuff like Howie, not a national show. Admittedly RKO took on Savage in 2002 because they had Hannity on delay and they wanted something a bit more live, Events like the Beltway sniper were going on and they said they wanted something immediate.

Live is great. Local and live is better. And if you're spending millions for Howie to make YOU money,
you don't cut off his last hour when there are still many listeners. They would be throwing away money. It would be as sensible as going to the Charles River and opening your wallet and seeing the money fall into the river. Why not suggest to the local TV stations they'd be better off running re-runs of Lassie instead of the 11 pm news?

Ok, then,
even better idea
a new Show
"Andre Eggleston" 7pm-10pm (US Talk Network)
and 10p-Midnight (Sunday-Thursday) Kim Iverson (Unitedstations.com)
That's what WRKO should do at night to be LIVE
on Friday nights, maybe get two local hosts, so they can have live shows from 7pm-10pm, and 10pm-1am. I'm just saying this because WRKO's been around for a long time and I'd like to see them stick around for a long time and be sucesful

If they have the budget to do live after 7 pm maybe they will. And if they think it will make money. They did used to have some local shows (remember Virgin Boy's Pleasure Pit?) and at times
like when there was a bad blizzard they'd pre-empt Savage and put on Moe Lauzier (no longer employed) so people could talk about it.

Of course Savage got pre-empted for convention coverage and I'm sure they'll do election
night coverage.
Personally I'd like to see them get Jeff Katz but it's all what's in the budget.

Female oriented, plays some music too.
The other host is "urban talk"

If it has to mean cut Howie's show for one hour do it.

-Surely you jest...Howie = approx. $300 for 60 seconds of advertising. Savage = approx $30 for 60 seconds of advertising. Simple math sir.

6-7 pm is still drive time. Also consider they feed the show to other affiliates. Are they going to tell them the show is cut to 3-6 pm? If the show weren't making money for RKO it would have been cut to 3 hrs long ago (not that it would have been smart to go syndie
in what's still drive time) or RKO would not have even renewed Howie. But they did. And 6-7 is
the "local hour" where he can talk local politics etc.

TKK keeps Graham on till 7.

But during a major storm or it’s aftermath it’s quite possible you won’t have internet access. Even if you have a generator for your house, most forms of broadband require amplifiers between you and the ISP that require power.

What people forget is that you can't even get a time check on WBZ during their weekend infomercials.
WTKK at least has weather and traffic every 15 minutes, and updated around the clock.
Does WRKO even have a local newscast at night ? I can only hear them on the internet along 495 at night, and they run ABC news on the hour with no local news

I aleo remember "The Two Chicks" they were gerat

Remember the good old days, when practically every station had its own news staff and reporters, with 5 or 10 minutes of news every hour? Even WRKO during its Top 40 heydey had 20/20 news. And traffic copters? WEEI, WHDH, WBZ, and WRKO all had them. WHDH even had both a chopper for in town traffic and a fixed-wing plane for traffic further out of the city. Now it's some guy in an office building with binoculars and a computer monitor watching web cams. Sigh.
