Which dubstep song do you think could crossover into US mainstream?

I have mixed feelings on whether or not dubstep can survive on an alternative format in this day and age. Back when the Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, and The Crystal Method ruled the airwaves, you also still had a strong grunge and numetal presence on alternative radio. Today, most alternative tracks come from much more mellow indie rock, and it has abandoned its much harder sound.

What Skrillex song is on MTV?

"First of the Year" has received spins. I know I've seen the Skrillex remix to "Cinema" on a video channel as well, but that may have been Mun2 and not MTV/MTV Hits.

People who grew up on 80s freestyle might have had a hard time accepting early 00s trance music. It's all part of getting older.

Thankfully, I am not one of those. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) '00s progressive trance.

I see dubstep a progression from breakbeat (which was very popular late 90s/early 00s), which was itself a progression of latin-flavored hip-hop/freestyle.

Breakbeat in general? Maybe.

The Skrillex remix of "Cinema" has already received spins at KIIS, so one could argue it has already crossed over.

On Beavis and Butthead last night they featured "Equinox" by Skrillex. For me this proves that when the suits like a sound they will promote it, even if it's largely unknown to the masses.Skrillex is pretty popular though, last week I saw his logo drawn on an art walk at the Cleveland Museum of Art. I was sorta surprised and I have seen too much for that to happen.Besides Skrillex,Nero,Netsky and Rusko are also worth listening to.If you want to go the remix route the check out Arion:

I thought it was 1st of the year that played? Being on Beavis and Butthead further concludes my theory of Dubstep appealing to Rockers (in addition to the colab with Korn).

Also, when Todd Terry does a remix, he doesn't call it "Todd Terry House Mix," as the Genre isn't necessary. It seems remixers want it known the remix is Dubstep as a hot buzz word, as opposed to getting recognized for quality.

The reason Arion called it a Dubstep remix is because he had an Electro remix of the same track. So don't read too much into it.

Actually, there are several sounds within dubstep. Skrillex and some of Rusko might showcase more of a rocker sound. But then you have Nero whose sound I think is an evolution of FL Breakbeat with tracks like Innocence and of course Promises.

Ask anybody, I like all types of music. I can beat most people at "name that tune" (even if its just scanning thru the radio dial. I can appreciate Pantara, NWA, Roni Size, Aphrodite, or Charlie Daniels. Skrillex? Nothing but a Junkie with a keyboard who didn't read the instructions.

I still think this genre of electronic music is well suited for alternative/modern rock than a dance station.

Let's face it, we're in the 21st century. The majority of contemporary music is electronic based anyway in one form or another. This has the "angst", "rebellion" sound that younger folks are into. It just works better paired up with artists such as Sublime, Green Day, Blink 182, etc than artists such as Sylvia Tosun, Nadia Ali, etc.

Though, if JES put out something dubstep, I'd grab it :) She could play it off.

Dubstep is definitely Dance music.
Some of you may not like Skrillex, but some of your favorite producers and DJs definitely do.

Looking over this year's list of the world's Top 100 ranked DJs, Skrillex is the name that kept popping up again and again as being hotly tipped by other DJs as breakthrough talent of the year. I've seen House, Psy-Trance, Hard Dance, Drum N Bass, Breakbeat, Progressive, Trance, and other DJs of all genres give him a lot of credit. He also managed to debut straight inside the Top 20

That tells me that he's more than just a junkie with a keyboard.

For a minute there I thought the folks at WTOK/San Juan was flooding this thread whenever the name Skrillex came up, since his songs are getting a lot of spins at that station.

Man, I would love to see a renaissance of the breakbeat sound. I'm now dating myself when I say I remember when this song was played on the radio late night on Saturdays.

I'm not sure how many remember these:

SO FINALLY, I FOUND OUT WHAT THIS SONG I KEEP HEARING IS!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRRjA63BQas

I KEPT HEARING IT ON KZON AND THEN HEARD SOMEONE ON KZZP FM USE IT LAST WEEK WHILE I WAS IN THE SHOWER. KZZP JUST REPLAYED THE SAME MIX JUST NOW AND I LOOKED IT UP, AND BAM! IT'S RUSKO.

.

For some reason, KZON is really pushing this record today. They also announced that it's out on itunes over the airwaves upon the 3rd time they played (or promo-played) it within 1 1/2 hours.

This is not exactly dubstep related, but I like how the station did show support for Steve Aoki in the mix last night. I must also add that the Nadia Ali track is starting to grow on me.
