Which formats do yall think we need on the FM dial in Houston???

I personally think if any of the station were to exit out of the format wars, we could use a ACTIVE ROCK format, tejano maybe

Maybe if they brought back active rock on KLOL I don't understand why Beaumont can have Big Dog forever and we could'nt keep 101

Maybe its the weird radio in my car, but I picked up both 92.5 and 106.1 from Beaumont while I was driving near downtown Houston on I-10 today.

Not a surprise. 106.1 is a regular in Houston. I can even receive Big Dog's RDS. 92.5 is listenable as well, but not as good as Big Dog.

I was pulling for the Fresh format to go to 95.7. I'm still hoping, if CBS snags another station, that it will happen. Or, maybe Cox can flip The Point. Lord knows, it is sometimes easy to forget they're still here.

As far as the Beaumont stations go, I can pick up KKMY Beaumont regularly during the Spring and Fall on the South Side.

Electronica Techno
Old skool Rap Hiphop R&B 1996 or older from like this could work here verry here

I would enjoy a AAA format, something like KGSR in Austin, or perhaps for a less "alternative sound" and more metropolitan, like Cities 97 in Minneapolis St Paul KTCZ.

(really, I would enjoy something like KFAN 107.9 in Fredericksburg that I listed to over texasrebelradio.com, but I don't think that is realistic format for a Houston station to program).

Even though I no longer live there, I still think Houston needs a gold-based soft adult contemporary format. A format whose core artists include Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton-John, Barbra Streisand, Rita Coolidge, Anne Murray, Air Supply, James Taylor, Seals & Crofts, Neil Diamond, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, and Simon & Garfunkel, among others. I know it's not a big money making format these days, but I think it would be a good alternative to what's currently on the radio.

That, and so I'll have something to listen to next time I'm in town. ;)

When I lived in Houston, I operated a Part 15 AM station with such a format, although it's probably not worth mentioning, since it could only be heard within half a block of my apartment building.

The satellite standards format that KBME 790 used to run has evolved more into soft AC; maybe if their sports format doesn't work out, they could switch back. (I know, not likely to happen; just throwing it out there.)

I know the title of the thread says "FM"; however, if no FM is willing to pick up such a format and an AM is, I don't mind switching over to the AM band.

That, and their programming sucked.

It was nice when Dave Ramsey was on 97.5....at least you COULD hear him....now on 950AM, it sucks most of the time....too much noise (from CenterPoint's crappy BPL and electric line static) and other things.....OH and blowhard Rush bumps Dave when the Astros on are KTRH........I wish someone would bump Rush...out of radio totally! Gawd, I miss Donahue!!! I remember when Rush was a guest on Donahue's TV show (showing my age now!) Louderbaugh showed his ego even then.....thank gawd I think for myself thank you!

Whether they 'sucked' or not is immaterial. The lack of signal doomed them from the start. KKTL was actually quite good. On a city grade stick, bad programming can always be changed for improvement. Without proper coverage, a station is always in an uphill battle.

Agreed. If you ain't got the stick, you ain't got the stroke.

I know you worked at both Chuck, but IMHO both of those properties were a poor attempt <at best> as true FM talk stations. The fact they did not have full or almost complete coverage doomed them from the jump.

I think had KKHU 106.9 had their upgrade at the time, they would have been the best bet for a competetive talk format on FM in Houston.

I'm not sure what a "True FM Talk" station is to be an example of said same. I disagree about KKTL, and not just because I worked there. 97-Talk-FM was neither 'right' or 'left.'

We covered the talk show spectrum pretty well. The Dayna Steele Show focused on entertainment and very little political. (I cannot tell you what a thrill it was to shake the hand and have a conversation with the late Steve Allen, who was the 1st host of the Tonight Show on NBC-TV in the golden age of television.) Dayna also broadcasted 'live' from Bosnia inteviewing the US troops. That was a technical challenenge for the 1st 7 minutes, but onec I got it under control, thgings went very good.

Following Dayna, was Hunter and Jones. This was certainly a political show with Hunter on the 'right' and Jones on the 'left.' It was a spirited show without any name calling. (I always felt that Ben Hunter could do well with a show of his own.)

At 3PM, it was the Roger Gray Show. Roger, who was the PD as well, did his thing and did it well mediating between 'right' and 'left.' I first met Roger in the late 1970's. He was on the air at KQUE from 9-Midnight and I was on KNUZ at Midnight. Before that he had been at KLYX 102.1 and KTRH before that. In the 1980's he emerged from television with stints at Channel 26 and Channel 11, to wind up on KPRC and KSEV. Rog could talk about a variety of topics with ease. (Personally, I would hire him to do mornings on KNTH and do away with Bill Bennett and me. IF, IF I could afford him.)

The rest of the programming on KKTL was from WOR New York, which included Dr Joy Brown and Bob Grant. Of course the I-Man held down the morning show. If the station would have had a decent signal, I think it would have evolved and grown with success.

As far as KKHU was concerned, it was as much as a disaster like the ill fated "Radio Magazine 1070 KENR/KRBE."
The imaging voice was terrible. Instead of saying "U-106 point 9," the liners were "You'll 106 point 9." You'll? You'll? Where is the letter 'L' on the word 'You?' I couldn't stand it. "You'lllllllllllll 106 point 9." It never sounded organized at all. It lacked consistancy. When they didn't have anything to say, they would play music from about a 50 song library. Former KILT staffer Ron Samuels stayed with the station after the format change of Smooth Jazz and shared info me about KKHU. If you are going to change formats, change all the way.

Thats what happened at 1070 KENR/KRBE and "The Radio Magazine." They changed the morning show 1st, followed by the afternoon show a few months later and so on and so on.

KFNC would have been better if the budget had been larger and full city coverage. We all knew that wasn't going to happen.

Back to what is a "True FM Talk" station? I think it's how one defines it. There are a lot of varying views as to what makes a "True FM Talk" station. For me, it's talk radio whether it's on AM or FM.

I would really like to hear a true Classic Rock format in this market. Right now, there simply isn't one.

The Arrow tries, but they fall way short.

There is no reason to keep a song rotation down to 400 or less, especially when you are playing Classic songs.

They could expand their song rotation to about 2,000 songs very easily, and still play only the cream.

Just a thought from an old radio guy.
