Which processing where?

I've always thought different brands of processing suit different formatts, but I'm interested to know what you'd do with this situation.

I have two new Optimod 8500's, an 8200, two Omnia.FM's and a Unity 2000i

We run 6 stations

EASY LISTENING
ROCK
TOP 40
HOT AC
GOLD
TALK

How would you assign the processors?

Thanks

You know honestly, any one of those processors would work fine at any one of those stations..... It'll (as with any processor regardless of manuf., and model) take some fine tuning and some dedication to make it sound great =)

IMHO, and I know Frank Foti has mentioned this before, it's not really the processor that can make you sound good....It's the person assigned to developing and adjusting presets. Because even with GREAT processors, I know plenty of stations that still manage to sound like crap.

Best of luck!

First off...what a station cluster! You guys really have it locked down.

Seems like a good idea might be to put the new 8500's on the two stations that get the highest ratings. What do you think, stace?

Its a market of about 500,000.

Ratings are...

1. More FM - hot ac (8200)
2. The Rock - Rock (Omnia.FM)
3. The Edge - top 40 (Omnia.FM)
4. The Breeze - easy (Unity 2000i)

Gold and talk come a bit further down, but I think The Breeze and The Edge are most in need of the new boxes.
I know RadioWorks just purchased 10 new 8500s and about 20 new 8300s to replace the ageing fleet of Omnia stock. Although in Auckland it interests me to note they're replacing Omnia 6's with the 8500s.
In NZ there are two main players and very little privately owned radio. RadioWorks (Canwest) and The Radio Network (Clear Channel). TRN use only Optimods, and we we're predominatly Omnia, so with this move there will be very little Omnia stock in the country which is sad.
In an ideal world. I'd like an O6 on The Breeze and More FM, and 8500s for Rock and Edge and Gold, my reason behind this is I like the sound of Optimod when pushed hard and on talk stations, but I think the Omnias do a better job of making music sound open.

Thats my take anyway

I agree with Omnias being good on your TSL stations. Our station with the new Omnia One is a Hot AC. I've been trying to figure out which is better...a hot-sounding Omnia or a cleaner sound to keep the TSL numbers up. What kind of sound do you have on your Hot AC?

We've got a new rock station in town, I think it has an 8200 on it, and it's pretty good. Gotta drive it hard but you could make it work well on the rock station.

Seems like a good idea you had to put one of the 8500s on the CHR station. Try the CRISP preset.

I don't know much about the 8500s but the 8200 presets are nothing to write home about. An 8200 can sound pretty sweet with tweeking though. I've got a 8300 on one station and after a lot of tweeking I got it sounding pretty damn good. The Omnia 6 on another one is pretty awsome with just the country 2 setting and a little more high-end. At least to my ear the Omnia stuff comes already with presets that are acceptable. The Optimod presets just need more tweeking to sound really good. If a digital Optimod is set right they are some of the sweetest sounding boxes out there still. I actually still rather have an Optimod I think.

If you have 2 new 8500s and 6 stations, then you must have 8 processors at your disposal? Or am I missing something... Those 6 stations have been running some processing up until now, right?

i would put the newer boxes on the highest rated, highest billing station and process it for good TSL.Nothing crazy and fatiguing...

8500s on the more agressive formats (Rock and Top40), 8200 on TALK (its ok on other formats but it will be great on a talk format) and spread the Omnis on GOLD and HOT AC...and the Unity on Easy Listening (which is not that intensive)
I havent heard the Omni.FMs so if they be cleaner and louder than the 8500s, swap formats on them...and the 8200 and Unity could be swapped....they are not as sweet on agreessive formats but on TALK or EL, should work fine.

Up until now

More - Hot AC - 8200
Radio Live - Talk - dominator
Breeze - Unity 2000i
Solid Gold - Audio Prisms
The Rock - Omnia.FM
The Edge - CHR - Omnia.FM

Plan is to move more's 8200 to live and give more an 8500

move Breeze's unity to gold and give breeze an 8500

Rock and Edge will have their Omnia.FMs replaced with further 8500s as capex allows

Hmm yes, now I see why you didn't mention other processors... It's hard to judge simply by format, without ever being in the market or listening to the stations. Having said that, just by format I would do something like this:

EASY LISTENING - Orban 8200
ROCK - Omnia.fm
TOP 40 - Orban 8500
HOT AC - Orban 8500
GOLD - Omnia.fm
TALK - Unity 2000

Ideally I would like to see Orban on Gold and Talk stations as IMO it does the best job on these formats than any other currently available processor. Definitely put something smoother than the crude Unity on Easy Listening - as it is not a competitive format I think a nicely adjusted 8200 will do a very good job there. I think Rock is fine left with Omnia.fm (the ratings are good as well) and treat your Top 40 and Hot AC with new 8500s :)

stace,

Are your CHR and HAC stations the most "mass-appeal" stations in your cluster?
