Whither WJSR?

http://www.jeffstateonline.com/rtv/wjsr/Default.htm

the transmitter (unless they moved it) is in the George L. Layton Nursing Education Building where the studios are located on the ground floor. it is a 100 watt transmitter so it's effective range is very small.

add to that the fact that samford's jazz 91.1 blankets southside & south of bham and 'jsr is almost unhearable except in the roebuck, trussville, pinson area.

the website you posted was a freebie by one of the students there at the time it was made and i am sure forgotten by now.

i spent many an hour in that studio!

It was on Saturday November 22. I heard it in Gardendale playing classic rock.

in gardendale? depending on which part of gardendale you may have heard a "skip" or something of the sort. by earth contour parts of gardendale may be within the range but not on a normal basis.

i have heard it in a very unstable scratchy form in ketona (between tarrant & gardendale) but it faded well before black creek road.

I've heard it as far north as the 292 exit on 65. It was choppy at best, but it was there.

Well the Jeff State page looks a lot newer than the angelfire.com page though it still provides very little info about the station. (A stream would be nice, considering that just about every college station has one, and WJSR's coverage problems are well known.) I was just surprised to see no references to them on myspace or facebook or anything that would indicate signs of life. They must maintain a very low profile off campus.

my last contact with anyone there (2007) was that there was a change in faculty sponsorship (not a rare occurance) of the station and that they were scheduled to go onweb by 2009.

don't know anything else other than that but i will endeavor to see about it.

If only I weren't out of town and typing this on a cell phone, I could share my experiences "working" a shift at WJSR. :D
Wow, we've got ourselves a high tech redneck on the Bama board. ;D

I used to DJ there, back when most of you were gleams in someone's eyes.... ;)

Can anyone confirm the continued existence of this station? Supposedly their transmitter is out beyond Trussville but I've never heard them and their website hasn't been updated in years.

The station is on the air with classic rock. I live in Grayson Valley and listen to it frequently.

I used to frequently listen to them back in late 07 - early 2008. I would help my dad guard logging equipment and when he would go off to sleep i'd start tuning them in the community of County Line, which is off highway 79 on the Blount/Jefferson county line. they played great music, but around 1-2 AM they had audio problems where their announcements would bevery quiet and the music would be a bit distorted. Maybe "The Edge" has gotten their audio straightened up.

I worked at WJSR back in 1997. It was soft AC back then and was known as WJSR or J91. While I was there we transitioned the format to Hot AC and changed the name to Hot 91.1. I have no idea how long that lasted. I did morning shifts from 7 to 9a several days a week with Daryl Perry aka. "Captain DQ".
