Who Announced It?

Anyone know which radio station(s) announced the free gas promotion on Rt 57 near the Thruway on Wednesday? It was sponsored by a bank which did not buy advertising to promote it. Apparently they sent cakes to air personalities to try to get a free plug, and it worked with one or more stations. If you're wondering why radio only gets 5 percent of advertsing dollars, there's a clue. No need to pay hundreds or thousands for a spot schedule; get free advertising for the price of a cake.

The cake was worth more than any spot in any day part on any station Galaxy owns that's for sure.

Well, if you saw any of the local TV newscasts, they all took the bait too. Though I don't know if they were bribed with free cake... TV absolutely loves "visual" events like this. They can't resist the B-Roll of the big sign saying "0.00/gallon" or the line of cars clogging up the roads.

I haven't seen any spots for said bank on local TV, so it looks like free publicity all the way around. Of course, radio stations are often the instigators... different stations all over the country will occasionally do free gas giveaways because they know they'll get TV coverage. Shame on whichever radio stations fell for their own gag by giving the bank and gas station free plugs. If these jocks had kept their mouths shut, maybe the bank would have coughed up the cash for some spots... and some talent fees for a remote. Besides, isn't that plugola?
