WHO BOUGHT AM820 WOSU?

From St Gabriel's Facebook page:

".. The New St. Gabriel Catholic Radio AM 820 will begin broadcasting on Tuesday, December 20 at 6 p.m.! A very special edition of "The Local Spotlight Show" with Mary Ann Jepsen will air at 5 p.m. on December 20 to countdown to the change!"

I expect the WOSU AM820 signal to go dark for at least a few a days before WVSG AM820 takes to the air on December 20.

It looks like the FCC's speedy approval of the sale will allow them to go on the air in December instead of anticipated January
sign on.

Wonder how many WOSU-AM listeners will not be able to hear the tOSU programing on FM once AM820 signal is no longer available?

WBAP DX alert! :)

It looks like tOSU will pull the plug on 820AM around December 9th.
Permission granted to post this email here:

"The sale of 820 AM is tentatively set for Dec. 16th. WOSU programming will cease on the station around Dec. 9th."

They could try Gospel since there was quite a few listeners unhappy with the demise of Joy 106 or see if radio disney would be interested in them. Heck even a intown am signal for Scott Shannon's True Oldies channel will do. It would be nice to hear music again on am.

They are making on air announcements on WOSU-AM-FM that WOSU-AM 820 will sign off the air for good on December 9 at 5:00 PM. They ask current 820AM listeners to tune over to 89.7FM. The announcements started yesterday and a couple of people are already complaining about
losing 820AM on Ann Fishers All Sides. Here is that show from yesterday:

Without listening to the entire podcast of that show, what kind of complaints were they getting about 820 going away?

Mike in Shortnorth (a caller) complained about the switch to "FM" .. said he would have trouble picking up the signal downtown ... (seriously 89.7's signal is located near downtown) He went on about HD Radio .. etc...

Thomas in Worthington complained about the lost of AM 820, avid AM listener, doesnt like the lost of local stations..

David, Made a comment that they can aford to hire a football coach (urban meyer) but can't aford to keep their AM station...

...

None of the complaints seemed really justified.. to the first guy they are already on FM and have been since Jan 2011... pretty much the same exact programming.. in fact listening they brand the station as 897NPR now and not even really mention their on AM 820 except for legal ID purposes...

Oh, geez.

Now, people with legit complaints are in Mansfield, where WOSV flipped to a "Classical 101" simulcast and never looked back. 820 is not the strongest, most interference free signal up there, but is easier than 89.7 (due to co-channel WKSU/Kent).

It only matters to Bernard Radio just how much money they will get for a lease of 1580.

For all we know, St. Gabriel will probably simulcast on 820 and 1580 for several months, then either go dark or take a religious or Hispanic format. All of it being leased-time programming, of course.

My guess is there will not be a simlucast between St Gabriel's 820 and 1580.. If I am not mistaken their LMA began around Mid-Dec (when they took over the station after its run as a lib talker) so I guess their LMA is likely up and they will not renew or keep paying for it past the 20th .. so Bernard will likely either simulcast 103.1, another spanish format, or go dark?

St Gabriel's pushing hard on the plans of broadcasting on 820 so it leads me to think they won't be on 1580 after the 20th...

Maybe Jake has more info on talktainment but here is a link on them:

St Gabriel Catholic Radio took over(LMA) WVKO-AM on December 24 of 2008. Maybe St Gabriel Catholic Radio will simulcast on 1580 for a few days or until the end of December.

They say the last day on WVKO-AM will be on December 31, 2011....

So, there will be a twelve days of simulcasting on both 820AM and 1580AM if all goes as planed.

Interesting quote from the Columbus Alive article:

One more big change is coming: The name CD101 will be changing soon, either to “CD102.5” or “102.5, The Alternative Station.”

“It’s very hard to rebrand something that we don’t really want to rebrand,” Malloy said. However, “102.5 — that’s what we are. Let’s just call ourselves what we are and stop screwing around.”

Hey, he said it, not me...
