Who do you miss on the radio?

What about Poorman? ???

KROQ's Loveline was best when the Poorman was there. He gave the show a SoCal feel no one has duplicated. That and the play between him and Dr. Drew was excellent. :D

I'm glad I have some tapes so I can get my Poorman fix anytime. ;)

As far as I know, the only news anchor of this type still on the air is Doug Limerick (ABC), who comes from the "Top 40" news tradition, from what I understand. My local ABC radio station (KGO) always cuts him off at the last commercial, before he can ID himself. I find that quite annoying...

But doesn't KGO run the ABC/I 'cast intact at the top? At least then
you get to hear "(sounder) From ABC News, Iiiii'mm Doug Limerick!"

He still anchors the 6-11 AM ET / 3-8 AM PT hourlies, correct?

Aside: one of the best TOH IDs/tosses to network I've ever heard was
what KGO used several years ago. Pity they still don't...

"...San Jose 56, Oakland 54, in the city 53 and on your radio it's 81.
KGO San Francisco. Six o'clock...(network)."

I'm not as big a KGO listener as I used to be - I don't think Limerick anchors past 9:00 Pacific time. And yes, he does ID himself at the start of the cast, but call me a geek - I like to hear it twice. Doug's not as over the top as the 60s era anchors though.

"This is Jaaaaaaayyy Paaaaullllll Huddleston, KHJ 20/20 News, And that's what's happening TODAY..."

KGO continued to use that TOH toss you mention for awhile even after they became frequentially correct. But somehow, "San Jose 56, Oakland 54, in the city 53, and on your radio, it's always 810"...didn't have quite the same punch.

I am a member of facebook, thanks for the news Poorman is as well. Someone told him about my shout out and he said ...

"Wow, what an honor! Thanks dude! I was mentioned in 1 of 2000 posts of who people miss on the radio at this site called Radio-Info.com. Most of the people mentioned are dead. I thought that was pretty funny."

Poorman, the honor was well earned. ;)

And i'm the one who started this thread so neener-neener :D

I miss Adam Corrolla on Loveline. Stryker was ok. This Psycho Mike guy just ain't cutting it. I'd love to get the Greaseman back in LA.

Billy Pearl doing the Top 30 countdown on KHJ. I think it was Tuesday nights in '75 when I was a soph in High School. I heard they canned it cuz of low ratings. Also miss some of hteir elaborate contests too, but that could be a whole new thread.

I also miss Jeff Gonzer from the Met, and Scott Shannon from Pirate, but at least I got to hear Scott when I visited the apple.

And there'll never be another Charlie Van Dyke.

Frazer Smith and his counterparts that I grew up with back in Ohio, Rich King on WLW and Dick Hatfield on WBLY, Springfield.

Also in LA was the incomparable Sweet Dick Whittington.

I would have loved to have heard Hudson and Landry live but we have their recordings to enjoy.

I did get to hear Don Ameche and Frances Langford do "The Bickersons" on NBC radio way back when.

Dave:
KHJ counted down the Boss 30 beginning back in '65. Pearl was just the latest in the string of 6-9 PM jocks to count it down. Bill was let go in August of 1975...I'm pretty sure the countdown continued for a while anyway with his replacement, Dr. John Leader.

If I had to guess, I'd say the countdown stopped when Charlie Van Dyke handed over the PD duties at KHJ to Michael Spears, who didn't do a countdown when he programmed KFRC. I'll ask CVD next week to see if he remembers...I'll also pass along your compliment.

In addition to some of those already mentioned.... Shadoe Stevens, Lee "Baby" Simms, Jimmy Rabbitt, Mimi Chen (weeknights), Dion, Damien, Billy Juggs, Mikel "Hot Rocks" Hunter (d), Linda McIness (d), and via the internet, streaming from KFOG in San Francisco - Dave Morey.

Thanks Michael. I remember seeing CVD once at a KHJ Coca-Cola Concert Caravan autographing someone's Top 30 survey. What a thrill it ws to actually talk to him on the phone when I worked at a messenger service in 1988. Then when I was in A-School near VA Beach in '89 I heard a voice over of him on WAVY TV 10.

Dave:

Charlie says thanks for remembering.

As for the Top 30 countdown, it continued for Van Dyke's tenure as KHJ's PD.

It probably died when Michael Spears followed him in May of '77, since (as I noted in the last post) Michael didn't do one at KFRC (CVD seems to recall that Spears' objection to the countdown was that you blow an entire hour playing the bottom third of your playlist all at once). If Spears didn't kill it, John Sebastian (who replaced Spears in January of '78) certainly would have.

Gotta agree with Dave Morey on KFOG in SF. He was the heart and soul of the station.

Lotta former KMETers on the list. The most interesting to me out of your list is Billy Juggs. I thought he was an average DJ at best, but I'll always remember him using the phrase "Juggs here" when IDing himself, which he did often. He was on the the Sound's KMET day last year from his home in Hawaii. Clearly he has not been on the radio since back in the day, and it showed. Unfortunately.

Johnny Williams overnights on KHJ cause who slept in '65? ;D
