Who is the Best and Worst on Long Island?

W

Will E. Lee

Guest
Just trying to stimulate Conversation on the board, who do you think is the best and the worst Jock on L.I. in the last year or so???

How about the worst station. Hands down WBAB, Worst So called Rock Station in the world! Don't even make an attempt with new rock. I hate the advertisment for #1 rock station. They don't even have finger's metal shop, at least that was listenable for the 3 hours it was on. If there was an active rock player on LI, and it was programed right, BAB would go down in a ball of fire, seems their only compition is RCN. #1 oldies station.

WBAB is still listed in arbitron as an AOR station. Perhaps if their ratings continue to keep slipping, the consultants will let them play some more new music. I remember when WRCN was once a great AOR station. It seems like yesterday.

WZAA has been simmulcasting 105.9 for nearly 4 years, now it's
"La Que Buena".

WBAB doesn't have a large playlist (not as big as Q104). There's tons of classic rock songs out there and they seem to play the same Aerosmith song everytime i turn on the radio (twice a day). Hopefully they expand their playlist, or they will stay on "THE EVIL LIST OF REDUNDANT ROTATION"!

Now the Best, PARTY 105. Great dance music, great personalities all around. I wish they would actually bring back the Party 105 jingles from 98-99, it made them unique. Seems like not too many stations are playing jingles. My favorite was "Long Island's Hottest music, (another voice says) Jamn' to the beat, Party 105!" Also as of lately there seems to be less talking, which is fine also. thoughts?

Party 105 is a great station. They play really good music and this is coming from someone who could take or leave dance music. About two weeks ago I heard a Re-mix of a Keane song (which is piano rock) on Party and I thought it was great. Ballsy to step outside the box like that.

Party is an example of a Long Island station that is better than its counterparts in NYC. The only problem with party is, I feel it is not a Legit station. No jocks, No website, its hard to get into a station that aside from music doesn't take any pride in itself by investing in itself. Hopefully now that TMO is out, the new owners will invest in Party and LIR.

Plus with a dance scene on Long Island which looks like it will never die there is a chance to make a ton of money with Party if it is run right.

By the way there is definatley ADD on this board since we can never stay on topic. But good discussion none the less!

WZAA is no longer simulcasting 105.9. They split off earlier this year and are now Regional Mexican.

Worst: B103/WBZO. Small Playlist, Horrid, lifeless Mid Day DJ. Weekend Female Jocks just as weak. A Jingle Package consisting of 2 cuts, played whenever, just because thats all they have. They were given a "Free Pass" a couple of years ago by Infinity/CBS and stayed 2nd rate for no apparent reason.

Its a lifeless, sleepy radio station just "going thru the motions", suited for Sullivan County NY or some other mountaintop...not Nassau/Suffolk.

I would have to say WHLI 1100AM. I'm biased because this station is the closest of what WNEW-AM was like over the years.

I've always had a warm spot in my heart for WNEW.This is the station I grrew up with in the 1970's.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Okay lets see what Will really wants, he registered just to make this post, so he either wants to bash some jocks OR wants to know what others think of him. This is getting old!!!

Will who do you want to bash?

Will where do you work???? Trust me the people here will tell you, good or bad!

Defending the lifeless mid day jock on B103, I know her, she is doing what they ask of her. They dont want a wacky dj, with bells and whistles, she is doing her job! She is a good kid!

BTW the WORST station has to be whats going on at 740 am!

Let me guess, your one of these older guys that never gets anything wrong... right?

Truth is I'm not a Jock, nor have I ever worked at a radio station. I've always just been a fan of music and radio. I live in Manhattan and for most of my life worked there until recently (about two years ago) when my work has taken me out to Long Island. I've gotten to know the radio scene more and more. I always liked reading the NY message board and was delighted to find one that catered specifically to Long Island. Since discussion was slow I thought I would start a topic. My motivation was that everyone knows who the legends and great jocks are in NYC but I was curious to see what people thought about the Jocks here on Long Island. Especially since I've only gotten to know the Jocks out here in the last year or two.

I've always followed Radio like it was sports league. It was always interesting to me to see what Jocks went where and why. I'm an Islanders fan living in Manhattan. For many years I needed another outlet to follow and be a fan of.

For you information I didn't post anything about the mid day jock at B103, whose name happens to be Cara, who I also happen to think is a pretty decent Jock and is in no way terrible. The person who posted that was not me, so getting your facts straight first would be a good thing.

The biggest problem I see with this board is its negativity. I didn't join this board to fight with "know it alls" like you who want to judge people they have no clue about. This is supposed to be about discussion. No right or wrong but open discussions of opinions of people who share a common interest. So that people can connect with each other instead of having to talk to our wives about her family and the type of dishes they use. If this isn't going to be that and its going to be a bunch of bitter "radio people" just talking about insider stuff that us outsiders aren't supposed to be a part of then so be it. I won't post or read anymore. I guess no new members can have an opinion or open up a discussion. I hope you don't treat all new people like this, it's not very welcomming.

Just so we all know how great you are, what do you do and where do you work?

P.S. Try and be nicer to people. Especially those that you don't know.

And I thought I was being nice!!! :)

Will, in the past people have bashed other jocks on this board, and it seems the only thing that most could do was to say he sucks she sucks, so I thought your post was the start of all that BS.

Im not telling you who I am or where I work, Im not on trial here.

However I will reply to your letter and will be nice.

1-I didnt say that you bashed Kara, I only replyed to the post within mine.

2- This board is for everyone, outsiders and insiders, but fickle as this business is nobody needs any bad press, because most radio people read here everyday.

3-I agree with you, the negative posting on this board is bad, which is why I replyed to yours the way I did, a post like yours will make all the bullies come out, people who have several handles and wouldnt have the guts to say it to your face.

4-newbies in the business also make posts like this to see what others think, again why I replyed to your post the way I did.

5-Im not trying to fight you, and I am not a know it all, trust me, but I have been around the dial enough to spot someone with an ax to grind, I have worked in three markets and theres always a post like yours, and really you could have re-worded your post. It looks like you are trying to do what I accused you of.
I stand corrected!

6-radio is a death business, I have seen friends lose homes, wives and all their money just to speak out of a little box.

7-you say for me to be nicer to people, especially those I dont know, might I suggest that you also do the same. If you are not in the business of radio, and you dont know what some of us go through on a normal daily basis, you have no right to come here and stir shit without getting some anger thrown back.
I know understand that your post was written as a fan of rather than the other way around.

8-that with standing I hope that you do return and get involved, just know that some things you write will be seen by someones employer, coworkers and perspective employers, and not your post, but the ones that come after it could be hurtful and could cause damage!

9-I find it interesting that a person who has never worked in radio, would follow it that close, I guess for those of us who do it everyday, forget that radio is still kind of cool to those who dont do it. And I guess it is cool in some respects, I forgot that sorry!

6 - So true, so true, and not one friend of mine ever said it was worth it.
versus
9 - It IS a privilege, but too many make an obsession out of it which justifies their negativity. I'm all for a healthy debate, but IMHO there are too many posters on these boards out to "B & M" and slam others... more than engage in intelligent conversation (case in point: NJ boards lately). Unlike the norm, the Production board posters tend to be very helpful and encouraging.

Addressing the question unscientifically:

Best AM shows in no particular order:
Jim and Kim on K-Joy - real & entertaining without dumbing down radio.
Wise Man and Frank on B-103 (which I believe has come light years as a station) - fun.
Chaz and AJ (ex-WRCN) from across the sound on WPLR - still dominating LI rock.

Best rocker: Kaptain Kevin on WRCN - everybody's pal and rock afficionado all at once.

Best station to tune into anytime of the day: the mighty WLNG, in AM mono.

Best remaining jock on WBLI: Al Levine on the scene.

Best reason to bring back the all-request morning show: Malibu Sue.

Worst underuse of a jock: the delightful Al Lewis on WALK. Am I the only one who would rather hear the fill-in jocks over the "Best of" shows? We're not talking "Best of Imus"-level programming.

Worst recent radio day of my listening life: Business Talk's launch on 98.5. I'll miss Reb & all my favorite bad hair band music.... ON THE BONE!

She probably IS a "Good Kid", we're talking about her show... her act if you will... not HER personally. For a live show, it sounds no better than a voice tracked show. Even a satellite feed would sound better. There is a big spread between what she is delivering and a "whacky DJ, with Bells and Whistles". Her act is better suited to a "Beautifull Music" Format rather than a Midday show on an "Oldies" formatted station.

Her show is in between two much better sounding shows/DJs. I think her "show" erodes the AM drive audience, which has to be built up anain in PM drive.

The station could and Should be sounding better than it does. While the station has exceeded owners expectations, it never lived up to what it should have become due to a playing it cheap, and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality.

I have to agree with Barry45RPM. I don't think her "show" sounds like that because she's doing what is asked of her. This is how she's sounded on all the stations she's filled in on. It's never fitted the format. People should be able to say what they want on these boards. It's not "bashing" people. What's the point of having these boards if people are only allowed to say perfectly good things?

There's not even a contest in my mind of who the best long island DJ not on the AM commute is. WALK's KT Mills. She's fantastic. Her enthusiasm and passion for her work comes through the airwaves loudly and clearly. She does a great job informing people about the music they hear, and frequently shares gossip about the latest going-ons with the musicians they play on the radio. Plus she has a delightful sense of humor. My favorite was when she was introducing Bon Jovi's " Who says you can't go home?" and she quipped " I saw Bon Jovi pajama's at the store yesterday. That's the only way I'll get to snuggle up next to him." The most horrible person on the radio is the same stations Jack Nolan doing weekend overnights. You can tell why they dumped this guy on weekend overnights guranteeing that nobody will hear him. The guy sounds like he smoked too many cigarettes. He has a rasp and sounds like he's just struggling to breathe, much less speak. Than again all the weekend overnighters are horrible. Laura Smith in New Yorks WLTW sounds like she's chewing gum, and Jay Verzi in Westchester sounds like Donald Duck. I guess it evens out.

The VERY worst is what WRCN is now.

2 dopey kids ...Jen and Dave acting like they know classic rock when they are only 20-somethings.
Jen is HORRIBLE, nasty attitude, and Dave sounds stoned with nothing to add.
Their usual topic is something like : who took a S--t in the office bathroom.

Tony was their last hope and he left.

Tony was far from being the last hope, and he was asked to leave! I understand that he had his back to the wall most days too!

WRCN is a classic example of what could be a great station, the music is killer, the talent..........Newbies on a classic station, however on Long Island where most classic rock jocks being in their 30s and 40s cant work for the low thirties that company pays. Unless you live in a van down by the river!
Their present company would rather not spend any money, so this is what you get.
The shining star at WRCN is now the music selection, and that's due to a good PD/MD same guy, miles ahead knowledge wise of the departed last hope. I'd like to see that station rise above where it is.......Not the worst station, just not at its best!

I don't know if Charlie is as good as you make him....but I digress.

So what happened to Glenn M. and the GM and sales Manager?

How could they ask Tony to leave but keep talent like Jen and Dave??? Truly they are the worst!

I agree the music is great.
