Who makes you cringe?

I find WSMV weatherperson Tim Ross absolutely cringe-worthy. Too much goofy and not enough credibility. When Tim comes on, I go look to see what Brother Statom is doing.

Oh man Scott..you nailed this one. I can't stand it when he refers to himself as "Mr. Tim." Grow up pal. Now Hollie, she's a different story altogether. She makes my heart go pitter pat!

Now I actually like Tim Ross, yeah he's kinda silly he puts me in mind of an old boss jock who's now doing weather. Of course many of the older weather guys were disc jockeys originally. I remember when he was on Fox News he was really corny, when he came to WSMV I noticed he toned down quite a bit. I think he's placed where he needs to be time slot wise. He comes across pretty friendly which is nice. He does put me in mind of a cross between David Letterman & The second Darrin on Bewitched. And Holly Thompson is SEXY.

Gotta gently disagree on this one...

Tim Ross should be allowed to be funny again. WSMV management toned him down. It's weather, folks. Unless it's
a serious weather issue, some of the best TV weathermen coming through this city were funny (or just weird.)

- Pat Sajak
- Tom Siler (where did he land??)
- George Goldtrap
- Boyce Hawkins
- Bob Lobertini (not sure if he was really funny, too young to remember)

Let him be funny. Lelan was one of the funniest weathermen when he started by saying cool things like
"our weather tonight..for you..for me.." / When it was 55 degrees "A double nickel" or a "Pair of Fours"
when it was 44. Fun = ratings.

By the way, there are a couple of pretty funny "Nashville TV Bloopers" videos on youtube. One is with Dan
Miller and Pat Sajak, and the other is a group of funny bits including Huell Howser and Dan Miller (really funny
about that pig that tormented viewers for years on Ch. 4.) Managed to make me laugh and remember how
much a part of my life Dan Miller and WSM were when I was growing up. Now, I am to busy to ever watch TV.
Obviously, out of respect for Dan Miller, I was looking for old shows with him on youtube. Some very nice
(but sad at this point) memories of a fine gentleman.

Speaking of fine gentlemen...there is a tribute video on youtube by Skip Woolwine of the ole 'SM 95 with
the very fine olebud in there. All good stuff.

Happy Easter, everyone!!!

who was the guy who actually started doing weather when 17 started newscast. He came and went on to bigger quick. (I believe Indianapolis) he was hysterical. I still liked Tim Ross' 17 degree guarantee.

Nock

I am sick to death of those Shane Jewelry commercials on almost
every single station. . Hate
that damn commercial. I may have mentioned this or maybe someone else did
but that mini-mouse lady singing the Mix 92-9 jingle...get rid of her. The really slow
Woody and Jim jingle on the River is equally as bad.

I listen to WLAC a lot and even though I mentioned Lavergne Vivio before I heard her describe the traffic patterns as "quite" instead of "quiet." She also pronounced Des MoineS Avenue. What part of her jowel has been removed????

She also says "Demombruen" instead of the correct pronounciation of "Demonbruen." Another thing she says is " Over here at..........................." as if she is on the scene of the accident, when in reality she is broadcasting from her home in Robertson County. She is pathetic!

Hey Oldies,

Lets not be too harsh. She evidently grew up in the area like I did and that's how I thought for years it was pronounced. I once worked with a guy, who, after finding his car had been towed, turned to me and asked, "Where the heck is Mum Mum Street?" Yep, same street.

As far as "over here at........" or that she's in Robertson County, not all that many people know that. And she must be doing something right, she has been at home on WLAC for a lot of years. And she is a real nice person which comes across in her reports. Just my thoughts...

I guess I feel the reason to even bring it up as a subject that as an avid radio listener I expect a certain level of competency in on-air talent. I would think someone like her who gets an extraordinary amount of air time should be able to communicate without a lot of local colloquialisms and without an extreme accent (of any kind, not just Southern). I would think that mispronunciations in a market the size of Nashville would be unacceptable. There are a lot of people who know the area as well as she does but IMHO, she is virtually unintelligible at times. Maybe I should just be "quite." ???

I totally agree with you. Obviously those @ WLAC don't give a s*it how she sounds because it's been going on for years. I listen to WLAC most all day myself and when Vivio comes on, I try my best to tune her out, but sometimes I just can't and I find myself cussing at the radio.

Buddy, you are the ultimate pro and always sounded professional on the air, unlike Vivio. If she isnt at the accident scene she shouldn't try to sound like she is. Sorry if I have offended anyone on the board, but, in my humble opinion, Vivo is one of the worst I have ever heard on Nashville radio and I have been listening for a LONG time.

No guys...don't give up your opinions. I always liked hearing what others think. I would listen to others -- but the final decision was mine.
I learned to go into a community and find how they pronounced names, --- then they find you more believeable. And what difference does it make if she's doing traffic from Springfield or a room that looks out on another building on Music Row? U-Turn was NOT hired to anchor news.
You can usually recognize out of towners when they come to Nashville by the way they pronounce Lafayette (we don't do it like they do in Louisiana) -- or Lebanon (we don't do it like they do in the country) . Richard Thomas always did 'Air Borne Traffic' even when he was in his red pickup truck. And do you rerally think Commander Chuck is flying?
And saying "over here on......" is a way many southerners talk. I people I'm talking to at work are from somewhere else say "bringing something home." We always 'took or take' things home and "bring or brought them to where the station."
And "run him over"? We say run over him.
Now...having said all that.....I'm not the expert....I just did it a long time and still enjoy talking about it. Always have an opinion. Then see what others think...and base your decision on your experience. That's what I did.
Keep it up, it gives us something to comment on.....thanks, buddy

let's not forget the famous time check on the House Foundation a few years ago: "IT'S EIGHT-OH-TEN..."
I have the audio.

Still, Buddy, you sound PROFESSIONAL, Vivio DOES NOT. She has been on radio long enough to sound MUCH better than she does.

Maybe it's just me.. but those CARSMART.NET "... home of the half price car, in Hendersonville" ads are so annoying!!

I think perhaps it's because they just sound GRAMATTICALLY incorrect.

Shouldn't it be... "CARSMART.NET, in Hendersonville, is home of the half price car?"
Otherwise it sounds like ALL cars for sale in Hendersonville are HALF PRICE!

Buddy is right--local pronunciation is correct. And if you're in doubt, ask.

I'm thinking about starting a message string about how much do you love Holly Thompson. JK
