Who Will Flip First, Pulse 87 or 101.9 RXP?

I'll take the "abuse" if I have to but it is a matter of thinking "outside the box" and to continue pursing the quest of making dance music as mainstream in this country as rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B, country, etc. And if all this can help get the 2009 re-work of "Dance Floor" out there, you win too!

you know I support you, Tony, but I feel the need to bring the reality check into play,...I tried and don't know if I want to try anymore to penetrate the insular box that the small world of dance continues to inhabit:
If i rework "Dance Floor"(which, besides the fact that it's my record, had 'mainstream' written all over it), it will be as a latin or hip/pop beat release, or perhaps even rock..
people are now packing the dance floor where I work to the regular radio versions of "So what" by pink, "Untouched" by The Veronicas,"Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry and "Gives You Hell" by All American Rejects, which are all basically pop/rock records..the sucess of "Rock band" and "Guitar Hero" in millions of households seems to be having an effect...
but I have no intention or desire to subject myself ever again to the snotty,all knowing gate keepers of 'dance', the big fish in a small pond which is rapidly drying up..

There has been so much I have learned so far regarding dance music in terms of radio, clubs, promoters, artists, etc. yet you do have this mentality (which I have been figuring out, and yeah...I CAN'T and most likely never will ??? .) where certain folks will go behind a track and knock down others, that are actually good, for whatever reasons may be. Now, it would be understandable if a track in itself had issues that were within the song (bad vocals, strange breaks, lousy remix, weird riffs, etc.). But if a song has that strong potential to hold its own weight but certain powers that be block it, for reasons outside of the song to which it could be anything (they hate the artist, that artist didn't "tow the line"), then that's plain wrong.

I certainly don't want to make any enemies within the industry; that is certainly what the coalition isn't about. But with dance music being weak in this country, in comparison to all of the other genres of contemporary music, there HAS to be some sort of change somehow. Yes, I do harp on radio but yeah, radio won't touch dance unless there's financial potential with the format and I've always realized that.

Perhaps this is very "basic" thinking on my part but I've always succumbed to the notion of "build it and they will come". That was my thinking regarding dance for the longest time. Whereas you bring about something "different" to the table that people may want to check it out, and thus build a potential fanbase along the way. I have learned it takes a lot more than that and it really is a matter of looking within ourselves (as those who are affiliated with dance....from the fans to the industries) to make change. And there's things that I'm still learning and if I am wrong, then I certainly don't mind being called out. But it does take the cooperation of everyone to try to fix what had been wrong and make it right....not that a selected "barrier" will block everything for their own gain. Then why keep pushing and supporting the music if there's no way, hell or high water, that things could ever get accomplished because of those barriers??

I do feel you Jimi. You're certainly not the first to feel that way, nor be the last.

NONE of the above is true of whatever you regard as 'dance' ,which has a snowball's chance in hell of re cycling into popularity;
even on itune's overall charts of popular downloads, dance isn't even a 'bridesmaid',more like an old maid

I'm actually going to attend my first Winter Music Conference just to get an idea of what's going on.

Going to the WMC wont give you an idea of whats going on. Its just a big party. Heck 95% of the people that go dont even know there is a real conference.

I think 92.3 could very well be the first to flip, possibly to a Hot A/C because it would seem odd that they hired Chris Booker to play classic rock. As for now, they're trying to be what 'NEW was in the late 90's.

Hot AC would compete with Fresh 102.7 which is a mix of AC and Hot AC sovCBS Radio wouldn't compete with themselves.

As for 101.9 I think they could be better in the ratings if they were a country station. But look at Emmis they have not flipped their poor rated Movin station out in LA.

Are you referring to Pulse or RXP? If it's the latter, then I would have to agree. They're really starting to solidify themselves as an edgier take on the AAA formula, with more of a focus on Alternative and new music, and not too much Hot AC fodder. Although I'd still rather they become a straight-up Alternative, I can appreciate what they're going for. I just wish they'd lose the AC/DC, Bad Company, Boston, Van Halen, and other such acts, but they at least seem to be cutting back on them a little.

By the way, yesterday was Brian Schock's last day. Is there any word of who will be replacing him, either as afternoon jock or MD? It will be interesting to see where things go from here.

I can't really offer any insight on Pulse, as dance music isn't my thing, but I can get behind any station that fills a niche instead of regurgitating the same old stuff.

my biggest problem with WRXP is they have DJs no one in the area has ever heard of...(with the exception of Matt Pinfield...) I am liking the music alot more than I used to. Im a Jerseyite and used to love WDHA but they have the same problem and I rarely check them out anymore..I enjoy stations with personalities that I am more familiar with...never heard the pulse station...sorry

I gotta say one thing here,

Who would have ever thought one could have a discussion of rock and dance music in a single thread? It's really interesting as you see the rock fans talking about 'RXP and the dance fans talking about Pulse 87 and there's actually PEACE! It's weird though whenever I see a new post on this thread, then I look and it's like "okay, a rock fan is responding", just as I'm sure the rock fans see me or someone else that's a dance fan thinking the same thing. But no malice on either side!

See....we CAN all get along!

I never had any issues with Dance fans. The way I see it, we're both fighting for a station that properly fulfills our needs. Although we may have three rock stations, none of them hit the mark for a forward-thinking rock fan like myself (though RXP is getting there), much like how KTU is hopelessly stuck in the past.

I'm familiar with Brian Phillips through the late G-Rock, and I think he's a good fit for RXP. I do think that putting a more well-known jock in PM Drive might help.

Oh no, that's cool! Believe me, when the listeners of G-Rock lost their station and rallied outside of their studios, my fist was up alongside with them in support! I just like the fact that two different fanbases can talk in the same thread and it's all cool! It's definitely a "far cry" from the "Disco Sucks" mentality that Steve Dahl "embedded" way back then.

Whatever happens with either station, hopefully someone can do something in order to "move forward" for either genre. But with the way the economy has been as well as the multitude of layoffs happening across the board at the major corporations, I see more Lite stations, more Jack, Joe, Pete, Bob stations, more 'KTU/Movin style stations, and nothing for core fans to care for since we will all have been pushed over to the Internet streams.
