Who Will Flip to All-Christmas and When this Year?

Since WDOK is now more CHR-leaning, will they still flip to all Christmas music? If not, which stations will and what are your guesses as to when?

I say 95.5 and 107.3 will flip sometime in mid-November or around Thanksgiving followed by 105.7.

I think 95.5 and 105.7 are the most likely of the three to go all-Christmas. The Fish has been doing the seasonal tradition for years, and is always a boost to the station. I think in the Fall 2004 ratings book, the station actually beat out WMVX and Q104 in the 12+ overall numbers.

Majic started the tradition after Mix used to do so until the switch to The Lake. Don't know about 107.3, but The Wave is getting in on the tradition, then good for them. It will be a HUGE boost after the latest declines.

The funny thing with all-Christmas for Mix in 2010 and WDOK in 2011 is that the seasonal tunes were programmed before eventual changes a month or so later or earlier took place - Mix becoming The Lake and Soft Rock 102.1 becoming The New 102 (even though they were 102.1 WDOK for a while despite the continued use of "Soft Rock" in their logo).

Though I would not count out 'DOK since it was a tradition for them too. My guess is they might through in some Holiday songs here and there (on occasion) with their regular format.

My prediction is that the WAVE will flip first, then Magic and the Fish sometime during the week of Thanksgiving. Don't count out WDOK either. They might still do it too.

We can concievably have 4 all Xmas stations going with DOK, The Fish, Majic, and The Wave?!?

Yikes!

I know Christmas music drives a lot of people crazy but it is a big ratings winner for the time it is on most stations. My advice to anyone if it drives you crazy don't put on that station during that time. I don't mind Christmas music in doses. I can listen for awhile then turn it off.

Speaking of The Wave, they are now broadcasting out of Independence. So the three stations likely to go all-Christmas will be pumping the seasonal music near I-77 and Rockside.

Kind of hard to "don't put on that station", if virtually all stations are playing Christmas music non-stop or in too big doses. That means not turning on your radio pretty much. I like my Christmas music mixed in here and there, like when I was growing up in the 60's. As I remember it, maybe 2 weeks before Christmas, the Top 40 stations, WHK, KYW/WKYC, WIXY, and CKLW would gradually mix in the Christmas tunes within their regular playlist, so maybe every 3rd song would be a Christmas song, then Christmas Eve thru Christmas day, non-stop Christmas music. Not non-stop during Thanksgiving day or before. They should let November be Thanksgiving month, and let Thanksgiving be Thanksgiving.

Just heard a promo on WDOK asking listeners to choose the Holiday music, and it ended with a Santa voice saying "your Holiday music station...Christmas 102!" Sounds like 'DOK is going all-Christmas.

If 4 stations are going all Holiday you mean to tell me you can't find another station that is playing your type of music? If WDOK is playing Christmas music you can switch to WHBC or WMVX and you get your music you like. It is actually quite funny every year to see everyone get so worked up about Christmas music. There are so many other choices on the radio dial find something you like or put in a CD. We as a society seem to think it is all about "us". If I don't like Christmas music therefore nobody else should listen to it. I am not a fan of country music should I demand WGAR and WQMX not play it? Far more important things to worry about in this world then whether a station goes all Christmas music on November 1st folks.

101.7 usually does in Mid to late November although Keith Kennedy could obviously verify when he usually does the switch. Maybe a few stations in Youngstown do as well? I am not sure which ones flip the switch over there for Christmas music.

Let's all start the Christmas music today-10 weeks before Christmas!!! its just a contest every year, every year, every year of who will be the first one to start before November!!! Did I miss Halloween?

What about Halloween music? We can start that after Labor Day and then after Halloween is move right into Christmas music? Although is there enough Halloween music to go 24 hours straight?

What about Thanksgiving music? Let's see "Alice's Restaurant" in 4 part harmony, or whatever it was, and maybe the "Turkey Trot" by Little Eva, I think. Easter fares just as well. "Here Comes Peter Cottontail", and maybe "Little Black Egg" which was originally intended as a twisted Easter tune. New Years, just one, "Auld Lang Syne". Oh wait, two, "New Years Day" by U2. There's a few with the 4th of July/Independence Day in the title or lyrics or about fireworks. And then anything and everything patriotic. Memorial Day - I don't recall anything special except patriotic tunes again. Labor Day - "Friday On My Mind", "Working For The Weekend", "9 to 5", "Take This Job and Shove It", and all the old union hymns, but the radio doesn't play those, LOL. But there is at least a couple hundred that were either written about or for Halloween, or would just fit in. I think if a radio station was adventurous enough and played some outside their genre, they could go Halloween for a week. But Christmas is of course the big winner. Really only maybe 100 or so core songs each covered by multiple artists.

With The Fish, WDOK, and likely Majic and/or The Wave going all-Christmas, who will likely gain the most listeners who don't want to hear the non-stop seasonal music? My money is on The Lake.

As someone who's worked in an amusement park during October, you'd be surprised. Just play a bunch of classic rock songs with vaguely Halloween-related lyrics (Witchy Woman, Superstitious, Spooky, I Put a Spell on You, Psycho Killer, Season of the Witch), then add in your classic Monster Mash, Purple People Eater, Time Warp, Ghostbusters, etc. and you've got something you can throw on the air for a few hours Halloween night. I've even heard "Clap For the Wolfman" at work even though that song is about Wolfman Jack, not the mythical creature.

Last year when I was in Youngstown the only station I heard playing Christmas music was WBBG 106.1.
