Who's Leaving WBNS-FM's Morning Show?

honestly why does mix even have a morning show? i can't remember ever seeing any kind of marketing (billboards, newspaper, tv) for this group (alan and co) or the last (JT and co). why put the money into those salaries if you aren't going to invest in spreading the word? these groups have been going up against WNCI and Sunny, two staples in the morning market here in columbus. no wonder they have shit ratings.

It makes the GM and the Wolfe family feel like they have a real radio group and that they are relevent in the market.

I've always thought that someone playing music in the morning with entertainment bits here and there would be a good route for 'BNS to take(Not to mention cheaper, paying one salary instead of three). Everyone else is talking in the morning and not playing music...This would be a different approach than all the other guys in town. Sadly the lack of marketing for the morning show is what is getting 'BNS killed in the mornings. No one knows about them for another, and finally 'NCI's "Morning Zoo" is tough to beat. That's why i'd take a music in the morning approach. 8)

According to someone in the station, Kabel gave notice on Tuesday. They're looking for more of a team show. Instead of the Alan Kabel show with Kate and Matt, they want the (fill in the blank) and Kate show.

They need to grab Chris Davis from afternoons at WNCI and Trisha Moore from WSNY. Chris has a strong presence in the market and Trisha has morning show experience (#1 in Mansfield, #1 in Ashland, #1 in Mount Vernon for 2 consecutive county by county ratings)

If not Trisha I also like Gina from WGTZ. If I remember correctly she is now doing TV/Radio for the Cox family at HIO?

Either way..they need to brand the show to be a part of the station.

Too bad Lisa Kick left Columbus. Imagine Mix 97.1's morning show being known as "Kick and Kate." :D

The question is whether Matt can take all the high-octane estrogen.

But seriously...

There's no reason not to try out Kate and Matt by themselves after playing second and third banana for so long. Have, say, ONN's Mike Hawkins do the hard news (or one of Angie Geer's co-workers at Metro Networks) while Kate continues to do the fluff stuff.

David Greer would be perfect, but he has a rather lucrative day job.

So I "Googled" David Greer (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=david+greer) and the top three results are:

Hi, my name is David Greer. I am a singer/songwriter from Montgomery, Alabama;
David Greer, Project Director and Deputy Chief Executive of Sakhalin Energy;
Entering his seventh season as head coach of the Wayne State basketball program in the fall of 2007 is David Greer.

To whom were you referring?

Thanks,
JbC

PS: the energy gent is also #4 and #5.

Gilbow, stick to customer service. Hawkins on a morning show? With Greer? No offense to those kind gentleman, but holy smokes. Put the puzzle pieces in the right spots. Those pieces aren't even in this puzzle box. Good god man. Mike Hawkins is a good newsman on ONN, please leave him be. And Greer, I'm sure he is a fine Attorney.

Doc...ONN and Mix 97.1 are part of the same company.

And I'm sure Greer is a fine attorney also. Which means he makes a lot more money practicing law than practicing radio.

In the same way, I make good money doing customer service that I'm the one writing checks to radio stations.

Seanboy,

I think we all know ONN and WBNS-FM are connected via ownership. You didn't really address Doc's statement on the viability of the show with an argument of talent, just a sidebar fact we were all aware of. Please try again.

How do you know that Esquire Greer's lawyering is lucrative?

Just wondering, and good night,
JbC

I would not have mentioned David Greer if his voice didn't appeal to the targeted female demographic. I first heard him on Sunny 95 when 97.1 was playing oldies.

As for Mike Hawkins...Thanks, JohnBoy, to your station's promoting itself as "Central Ohio's Home for Fox News," listeners are now looking for other options. If Mix 97.1 is trying to take listeners away from Sunny, simply popping Mike in the same way as they do Angie Geer just might work.

But also keep in mind...I haven't listened much to Mix 97.1 since WVKO went back on the air. Now, my commute consists of Bill Press and "Crap You Haven't Heard."

I'll just leave it at that.

Good night, JohnBoy.

Seanboy,

So, "he has a nice voice and another station, on a different band, isn't what I like" is your argument? I understand you are attempting to be dismissive, but I know you can do better than that. Again, just trying to achieve some clarity on your response to Doc's post.

Were you going to address the lawyering question?

Best,
JbC

Actually, I have both AC stations set in my car.

As for the lawyering question...I have no problem in contacting David Greer over the weekend to get the perspective first-hand.

However, I do have something more pressing on the agenda.

Good night, JohnBoy.

Greer is the Great Enunciator.  He enunciates every syllable clearly and deliberately, as if teaching foreigners how to speak English.  Do women respond to that, even if they are from Columbus instead of a foreign place like Estonia or Texas?  Is it a lawyerly thing?  Seriously, I don't think he sounds bad, but the enunciation gets to me after awhile....although he does seem to have toned it down a bit lately.

Although I don't listen to Mix 97.1, I do know Jay Taylor. I have a lot of respect for Jay, and he will put together the best morning crew he can with what he has available. Until they find a new morning show, I think they should go with Yesterdays Top Secrets.
