WHTQ 96 Rock to flip to simulcast of WDBO-AM 580 on Friday morning

This has got to be the greatest news for Mick Dolan and WDIZ.com. Go Mick. Raise the rates. It's a bummer what happened to Mick on WLOQ but maybe this the grand plan for Mick to make WDIZ.com bigger, better and more profitable. Call Terry Van mabe he can help you sell it. Where is Wally from Fern Park Station when you need him?

I see on WDBO's website their new logo. Couldn't help but notice that 96.5 is more prominent in it then 580. How long before the AM is totally neglected with the exception of the legal id for it run at 100 MPH.

Instead, I'm stuck on a 1,300 watter for just 2 hours... :D

96 Rock just announced it will go to 96.5-HD2, so no "All DJ Mo all the time." :p

That should have come as no surprise. At the transmitter, both programs are already there. It is just a simple task of swapping the HD-1 and HD-2.

That could have happened at any time. It is why I still think that is what will happen with WXTB in Tampa.

In between the great rock music, the final hours of "96 Rock" on the big analog stick included an announcement from Hildi Brooks (saying "it was a blast") followed by send-off spot that "96 Rock" was going the way of deceased artists Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison today. At 4:59 a.m. they switched over to the simulcast of WDBO-AM and played a very old jingle from the 1950's ("580 AM the news and weather station" ... "this is 58 WDBO's wake-up personality Jim Turner"). They are so giddy, sounding like it was their first day of broadcasting.

WDBO-FM 96.5 is in monaural on the analog signal with RBDS scroll saying "NOW ON FM 96.5 NEWS TALK WDBO" -- their HD-1 feed has stereo commercials and jingles. They actually began the new RBDS WDBO scroll yesterday. "96 Rock" lives on jockless with continuous rock music on HD-2 in monaural. Another stereo rock music station bites the dust, and Bubba was canceled too. Oh well.
 
Heh. Talker WERC-FM in Birmingham is the same way. Mono analog, stereo on HD. It's weird, especially if the HD drops out during a high stereo separation commercial.

Wonder why the rock is in mono on HD-2? They need to tweak that.

According to Yes.com, the last song, played at 4:56 AM today, was Metallica's "Sad But True." Preceded at 4:48 AM by Stone Temple Pilots' "Dead And Bloated" and AC/DC's "Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution." Linkin Park's "In The End," which some may have speculated as the last song before 96 Rock gave way to WDBO-FM, played at 4:31 AM.
 
The engineer probably forgot to change the audio mode on HD-2 from mono (when it was WDBO simulcast) to stereo when they flipped the channels around.

I don't know about the local guys, certainly some of the national ones are, but to my knowledge, this guy is really more of a Ron Paul Libertarian. Wow, his home page has a big add for WDBO, "Now on FM".
 
Glad to hear the call letter change to WDBO-FM. But correct me if I'm wrong. If they are still running HD, shouldn't they be saying WDBO-FM HD1 Orlando at the TOH ID instead of just WDBO-FM Orlando?

Since the legal ID is "WHTQ Orlando". the HD is not part of the legal calls. The FCC doesn't care if it is HD-x or not.

"WDBO-FM Orlando" does not yet legally exist. It is marketing only.

I lied. As of today, WDBO-FM is indeed their legal calls. If you check the FCC page, they will tell you a search of WDBO on FM "no record found". If you look up call sign changes under WHTQ, it shows up WDBO-FM as the start date of 8/19/11. It just doesn't tell you what time today. We all assume 5:00a.m. edt, when the switch was thrown.

But, your milage may vary...

At least when I'm in the villages, there's WNBD-fm. I've liked HTQ's tweaking (not the "Classic rock that really rocks" version. WRUF-M IMO was a good rocker at least in the last 7 years before it switched to country. Not that I have anything agenst country (I actually like it), but all the rockers are dieing, it seems.
Sad, but there's only one rocker and its alturnative WJRR. Maybe JRR might morf into a different flavor of rock (not sure if classic rock would do better then its current incarnation?
Wonder if that's an automatic rateings increase by default, since there's no other rockers in Orlando.
 
If you like rock go to WDIZ.com. I think they even have an app for your phone.
 
The thing is when it gets to listening online then what's the point to listening when there's more independent choices out there.

The sad thing is that I used to enjoy listening to mainstream radio when I moved down here, but they kept cutting down any variations on a theme. Like the modern rock station? Sorry, here's a sunny mess of disco and dad rock with some spaz trying to be Casey Kasem. Don't worry it will sound good in the office. How about the 80's alternative weekends? Sorry, they want to change to classic rock. So why listen to them when I'm already listening to a better classic rock station? Wait, the classic rock is changing? Actually it's not as bad as I thought it'd be. A little cramped, but nice to listen to, I could get used to this. Sorry, their ratings are lower then JRR, we have to change it to tea party talk radio. That'll make money!

I listen to JRR. The DJ's may be a bit annoying, but overall I like the music. I especially like the Saturday night 80's rock and "Against the Grain" where they play a lot of stuff that I never hear normally. It just sucks having only one type of rock station on the dial.
 
The reason is clear.

A radio station is finding it harder and harder to "sell" the station to prospective advertisers when the ears are not listening. With MP3's, iheartradio, Pandora (aptly named), satellite, and who else knows what's next, Rock is the format that is the lastest victim. In New York, Philly, and Orlando, what market is next?

I have my thoughts, your guess is as good as mine, but it will happen.

AM's will become infomercials and Religious for awhile while Sports and News/Talk migrate to the FM. There is currently no new "Rush" on the horizon that will take either band to the next level. On-line will be getting easier and more dependable with smaller things that resemble "radios".

That is until the government goes too far and orders a shutdown-type of an event.

There are bills now in Congress being discussed dealing with a "switch" for the internet.

It only takes one event and people will someday wish they had their radio back.

I don't hear anything on 96.5-HD2 at the moment...?
 
1. It's Rock100DIZ.com not WDIZ.com.
2. That's laughable. I admire the effort but if I'm already online, I've got better options.
3. Same with WLOQ.com... if I want a smooth jazz jukebox, I have many options. Good luck to all.
 
Thanks for getting the wed address correct for me....Rock100DIZ.com. Everybody should support their local radio stations or we will be forced to listen to generic bland radio and would have missed great local/regional bands. I applaude Mick Dolan and his efforts to keep local rock music alive in Orlando.
