WHTT FLASHBACK WEEKEND

God, that was perfect yesterday. I drove from Toronto to Niagara Falls without changing the radio station from WHTT. I am just wondering, was this just a one weekend stunt, or is there more to the WHTT Flashback weekend? Is there a glimmer of hope that we may get classic hits back, because I have not heard Buffalo radio sound so darn good in a long time and I really hope there is something more to this.

They're saying "all those great songs are back." On Memorial Day weekend, they played a mix of 60s,70s,80s music, with no current or 90s songs (at least none that I noticed.) A few weekends ago they played all 70s songs and this weekend, they're playing lots 70s songs mixed with a few 60s Beatles, Motown, CCR and Grass Roots songs (?!) mixed with 80s hits from Journey and John Mellencamp. The real kicker was hearing "American Pie" by Don McLean. Is this a hint? This kind of music mix sounds very good. Another thing, why is morning guy Bill Lacy on Sunday? Is this some kind of a test?

I'd say it's to give him exposure to people sampling the station for the first time. He's probably voicetracked.

Mix sounded great all weekend, playing songs like House Of The Rising Sun, Good Lovin' and Spirit In The Sky, and they also played Kyrie and other 80s songs too. All the fulltime staff was on today for 2 or 3 hours at a time, but the regular weekend jocks were off. Does this mean anything, especially because it was a Flashback Weekend?

Re-Mix?

I agree that it's great to hear them "Get Back" to more of a classic hits format. Perhaps they looked at the fact that they were 3rd in a 3 horse AC race, and began to figure out that the numbers they had a couple of years ago were better than what they've got now. Maybe they'll do something truly revolutionary and go with a "sound" instead of an era.

I'd love to hear a station that played great pop/rock without the disco, grunge, '80s electro-dance-pop, or whiny women of any era. It would even be interesting to hear some of the newer music of core artists that never makes it to the airwaves today. James Taylor, Carole King, Paul McCartney, and Paul Simon have all produced records in the last decade. Wouldn't it be nice to know what they sound like? I also wouldn't throw out newer artists who have the right "sound". Sheryl Crow and KT Tunstall come to mind as artists who fit "the sound".

I'm not sure what the deal was with their regulars on Sunday. I heard Tony Venteroli on Saturday, so the part-timers were on part of the weekend. I also heard Brian Walker on both Thursday and Friday in PM Drive, so maybe there were some other factors "mixed" into the scheduling. I guess we'll have to wait and see, huh?

Verrrrry strange, this Flashback Weekend stuff. Identity crisis? Rarely do radio stations do anything without a reason. It may be that WHTT management is reconsidering some of the format changes that were made over the last year. I heard some kind of a promo soliciting listener feedback on the station a few weeks ago. It may be that Mix actually is responding to listener comments. Maybe they realized they blew a good thing when they traded in the Beatles for Chryl Lynn.

I scanned across them today while they were playing the universal classic, "Good Lovin'" by the Rascals. This is a song that WJYE doesn't play and Star can't play. The Flashback Weekend may be nothing more than WHTT trying to differentiate itself from the sappy AC and the Hot AC competition. Yet, checking in just a few minutes ago, some type of 80's ladies dance song was playing during their Sunday John Tesh show.

Who knows? It may be a sign, it may be a quirk. More will be known if and when the classic hits songs that were on this weekend re-appear during the week. In any event, I don't hear WHTT going back to oldies. That ship has sailed. As to the voicetracking and the weekend guys... Budget cuts? Staff party? Corporate meeting? Radio flu? Tune in next weekend.

Maybe they're just recalling a tactic used in years past. In the 80s, many markets without full-time oldies stations had "Oldies/AC" formats. Mainstream AC stations, but oldies for an hour at noon, Saturday and Sunday nights, and themed weekends.

It's unfolded much as you described. They've added a flashback hour at noon which features mostly 70s music with some 80s and a few 60s songs.
