Why 95.7 Sports May Work

KGMZ gained .3 points while KTCT gained .4 and has higher cume. Remind me again of why KGMZ is still on the air?

Because they don't know what else to put on that frequency. :)

Give it a few more months before Entercom pulls the plug on 95.7 The Game and flips it to either a CHR or perhaps a Modern AC station!

95.7 has quickly become the biggest recent failure for this company. They came out arrogant and loud shouting down KNBR and got wiped out and embarassed from day one. They are the laughing stock of sports talk on the west coast.

So you're saying they'd be better off simulcasting KNBR? :)

One can always dream of the dance music format, but that's not such a format hole now...
And the PDs all work for Clear Channel in different markets.

God help us. :) I've frequented this board for years and "dance music" seems to surface every few years. For real though, what format is missing from "The City / Frisco / San Fran"?

New rock is missing.

What format is missing?

Big bands
Doo-wop (Grinder's Grooveyard on KPOO Monday nights is NOT enough!)
Early jazz
Western (like the old KEEN, KSAY, etc)
Variety (that is, music, news, and sports)
New jazz
Beautiful music (like the old KFOG, old KABL, etc)
Oldtime radio (long-form shows such as Gunsmoke, Pat Novak for Hire, Dragnet, etc.)
Ethnic block (in ye olden days, KLOK had the Polka Party sponsored by various German-owned businesses)
Agricultural (go outside the immediate Bay Area and there are LOTS of farms).
Eastern European music (klezmer, Balkan, etc.)
Club music - Turkish hip-hop is HOT right now
...and those are just the formats I like. I'm not even talking about the ones I don't like

Impressive list. So which format can actually make money? They have nothing to simulcast. We know Country doesn't typically work in San Francisco.

Make money? Probably none. But that wasn't the question. As to country music, I specifically left that off the list. Western music worked for decades at KSAY 1010, KEEN 1370, and for a time at KOFY 1050. Of course, it was a different time and place, but Western music did work. Here's a little more about the genre: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_music_(North_America)

I'm sure weav is sick of reading about this....

Country always seems to be the fall back format for 95.7.

Although ratings growth has been extremely slow for 95.7, it would not surprise me if Entercom is more concerned with K-FOX at the moment. That brand has been hemorrhaging badly in the ratings as of late, and The Bone has opened up a significant lead.

Quite frankly, if I were Entercom:
--I would sell 95.7
--I would move 102.1/98.5 to an "Everything That Rocks"-type format. The Bone sucks. They've been playing the same 300 songs since sign on it seems.

Once again, 95.7 The Game isn't going away for a few years. Locked into long-term deals with the A's and Raiders. Besides that corporate seems to be very happy with their "progress" or they wouldn't keep pouring money into it.

That doesn't mean they can't sell the station. Perhaps a different owner could make a more successful go of Sports.

A's baseball isn't exactly top-flight programming. More like bottom feeding. There's a reason all of their recent flagships have been garbage stations with few listeners.

Entercomm is locked into long term deals with A's and Raiders, not 95.7, right? As long as an Entercomm property airs their games, what's the difference? I'm sure both sides have escape clauses. Besides, what's your idea of long term. For all we know, both of those teams could be in different markets within 3 years. As someone else said, you might as well sell off 95.7 sports idea and just air the games on KUFX or KOIT.

Even if the Game isn't going away for awhile, it certainly doesn't seem to be doing any damage to KNBR. Entercomm might as well just save themselves money and simulcast ESPN radio when local games aren't on. Perhaps if Entercomm had a much larger signal and a secondary station, they could be competitive. They blew the money to air things like the NCAA tourneys and NBA finals and promoted the heck out of them, but those big games always get bumped by the A's so what was the point of those deals? Keeping that content off KNBR? It certainly doesn't appear to be helping.

What has 95.7 averaged since they've come on-air? A 0.9 at best. They could switch to spanish programming and pull better numbers than that. I applaud Entercomm's efforts to compete against KNBR, but they've essentially entered a tricycle into a dirt bike race. Until Entercomm is ready to make sweeping changes, starting with their painfully inept PD and air talent, a consistent 1 share will always be a pipe dream. In the last 20 years, no format has lasted longer than 5 years on that frequency. I guess Entercomm has 3 more years to make a go of it before it becomes a spanish talker or just another AC, either of which would garner better numbers today.

It's Entercom, not Entercomm. And you have no idea of the level of cockiness in that company. It took them 4 years to admit they were wrong about country in this market. It will take at least that long before they give up on sports. As for putting baseball or football on KOIT? They're not THAT stupid. And yes it DOES matter which Entercom station airs the games. Entercom wanted to air the Sharks on 95.7 but the team rejected that immediately. That's why hockey still airs on K-Fox and not the sports station.

ADMIT, or they were willing to give the format a decent chance? I'm remembering that it was Entercom that brought us the original Live 105, KITS, so I'll probably always have a fondness for them. Remember that in those days "modern rock" was only heard on college stations because the major labels weren't pushing it. This meant that in those days the music was coming mostly from indie labels. Gotta give Entercom some credit for going against the grain on that one AND sticking with the format until it took off.
