It was originally part of a round of staffing cuts. Mo Kelly had been a weekend host on KFI for several years until about four years ago when he was promoted to the weekday evening shift, 7 to 10 p.m. Good for Kelly. I liked how he sounded. He also contributed commentary to iHeart's Black Information Network. Late last year, Kelly was eliminated as iHeart also cut others around the country. Since then, KFI has used fill-ins to handle the evening shift.
Now KFI has named a new weekday schedule. The station is teaming two new hosts, former KFI fill ins, to handle noon to 3 p.m. The other weekday hosts remain, although their shifts may have changed a bit. So basically iHeart cut one person and now is employing two people in his place. Where's the savings?
I always wonder about these staffing reductions. John Smith gets cut from afternoons on a rock station in St. Louis. Mary Jones gets the ax from middays on an urban AC station in Memphis. But these stations are not going to leave these shifts empty. They will eventually put new DJs in those shifts. Other than new people getting a bit less salary than the DJs who were dismissed, how does this save iHeart or another big owner that much money?
Cutting an evening person and putting a syndicated show in that slot, that I understand. But axing one person and eventually hiring another person, that I don't understand.
