Why Facebook is important to radio now

This topic was brought up in another recent thread on this LA board but that thread was closed, however I want to address it

Why is Facebook important and sometimes critical to a station?

In my case.. we’ve got a small wildfire right outside one of the communities my radio station serves. We of course air updates on the radio but for many years, community news has been spread through social media.

There for some reason isn’t a listing for this wildfire on the interactive wildfire map at smoke.alaska.edu but I’ve spoken directly to the public information officers and posted the Info my personal Facebook page, tagging a dozen or more community members while also posting it on the stay on Facebook page.

Trust me, word spreads and people will read it even if they don’t hear it in the radio. This kind of urgent info spreads quick on Facebook.

I'd broaden the topic to all social media. Share videos and pictures on Instagram or Tik Tok. I prefer Twitter because the platform is simpler. Engage with the audience. Watch what recording artists do. If you want to build a career that is more than being a disembodied voice on an aging platform, the place to do it is on social media. PPM has forced limits on what you can do on the air. Those limits don't exist on social media. If you really have talent, and you really are a personality, people need to see it.

I say the same too like you did. If you are doing political talk show host then Twitter is definitely very important to them because they have to track the latest rantings in the 2022 elections. For other stuff like a music show then it's open for any venue like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or Snapchat take your pick.
