Why is Rock 93-9 struggling?

The latest trends show a rating of 1.1, making them the next-to-last-rated FM station in the market. They debuted like gangbusters in 2002, but haven't gotten anywhere close to it since. I didn't like the idea of putting Lex & Terry on in the morning. I don't listen to Rock a lot, so I don't what know it is that can be fixed. What if they were on a bigger signal? Would that help?

I would hope that Rock would be around quite a while since there is no other true current rock station around. But at a 1.1, something's gotta be done quick.
 
The only thing that will help is a new format. The same tired songs over and over again are killing it. Its not the morning show or any on air people its the music. Kids dont listen to the radio anymore.
 
I've said since they put Lex & Terry on in the mornings that the station was going to tank. They need to put Brad & Beaver up against the showgram if they want to do any better, IMO.
 
Has anyone listened to Rock939 lately? Listen and you will understand why its in the toilet. It sounds bad, and its just annoying to listen to. Both the music and the "personalities" Sorry if I stepped on some toes but the ratings speak for themselves. I wish they would go AAA or Americana. If they change it will probally be some flavor of the month format.
 
1) Bad signal.

2) Fickle & difficult-to-sample demo.

3) Weak presentation.

AAA, Americana, Classic Country...all boutique formats, not real good choices for an inferior signal. Something in an urban vein or slant...as the signal covers most of the HDBA areas adequately. Smooth Jazz perhaps?

I hear Radio Ahhs is available.... ;D LOL
 
If Rock were to change, then that would leave a huge hole open for new rock in the market. Would Z106.7 go back to playing currents? Or if Clear Channel were to create a rock monopoly by flipping Q105.1 to rock (and keeping Z classic rock)? How about Stan "The Man" Branson getting some brass balls and dumping gospel for rock on 105.9? Face it, they're not gonna beat Hallelujah anytime soon. The possibilities are endless.
 
How about moving Miss 103 to 106.7 and change the call letters to WKYV. They could call it KY107 or something. They could then move Z-106 down to 102.9FM and call it WZZQ.
 
KY 107 was country when country wasn't cool. remember Hillbilly Willie on 106.7? After it became Z-106 he turned up very briefly on WOKJ during its short time as a country station right before it went dark. whatever became of hillbilly willie? could have sworn I heard him on WQST Forest a few years back.

You did. Hillbilly Willie did a short stint on WQST 850 a few years back when Larry Parks had first brought it back on the air. Can't remember the exact year, but I remember talking to Willie and Larry both while I was over there doing some transmitter repairs.

Well, basically, they share too much audience with Y101. Anyone who thinks Rock competes against Z is fooling themselves. Let's use the Miller Lite Crawfish Boil as a case study: Last year, almost everyone from the Meridian are who went heard about it from Q951 (then a CHR). A good many of the "rockers" at the concert were actually listeners of Y101 and other top 40 stations. More people recognized Lauren when she was just out in the crowd than applauded for the Rock jocks when they were up on stage. In conclusion: There aren't many people in Jackson who listen to rock only. Most in that demo are going to get their "rock" from the likes of Y101 and will also listen to 99 Jamz and other urban stations. Look for proof no futher than the fact that T-Pain is a headliner at this year's 'boil.

Is it horrible in the sense that they play classic rock? I'm not necessarily against classic rock being played on an active rock station, but is it really necessary to play it?
 
If someone wants to hear classic rock, they'll listen to a classic rock station. If they want nothing but newer active rock... well, there you go. Some classic rock is ok (it's akin to playing golds on a CHR or Hot AC) but not a whole lot. Sometimes I think they play too much old stuff.

How exactly can you say this Jonny? I believe the Classic Rock Station in Meridian and V each had equal or even more tickets than Q?

That depends on what you mean by "classic rock". Edgier safe-list tracks or older heritage hard rock(Iron Maiden, Priest, Queensryche).

One an hour of the heritage hard rock from 10a-7p and 1a-5a would make sense.

There are two reasons that tracks of the safe-list ilk would be folded into the mix.
  • Perceived improved saleability on the street.
  • Hopefully "thieving" some TSL from the competing classic rock station.


These strategies continue to be employed, but I've yet to find one situation where the 2+/hour edgier safe list classic approach worked in an AR format. There have been few situations where people bought an ad schedule on an AR, because of 2-3 CR songs in an hour. Concerning 103.9 The Pig in Texarkana, the numbers went down with each rating period after a strong debut where they were quite modal. They ultimately flipped to classic country.
 
What would you suggest be done with 93.9? It's obvious that a format change might be needed. I know what I would like to hear, but nobody cares what kind of music I like.

I said, "most" not "all." :) I know that The Buzz and V each gave away a large amount of tickets each and gave lots of ad time. I don't know about numbers so I can't attest to that.

What I mean by classic rock in 93.9's case are artists like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath, Rush, AC/DC and Van Halen (particularly the David Lee Roth era)--all which are played or have been played on 93.9.
