Why it might be cool to work for XM or sirius...

1. read recently that both lost in the neighborhood of 100 million last quarter. I think it would be pretty cool to work for a company that isn't concerned with something so pedestrian and quaint as 'making a profit'. Be much cooler to be able to do whatever we want without worrying about whether it makes the company profit or not.

2. 100 channels to program. Much cooler to not have to make hard decisions about what music fits a format or a station, when you've dozens and dozens of stations where you can chop slice and dice music into ever smaller pies. Like alternative. There's Fred for early alternative on XM. And Lucy and Ethel for newer alternative. And different formats for metal, classic rock, and even obscure classic rock (deep tracks). So much cooler to throw out 5+ different formats, than have to make the hard decisions to try and blend that into one mass appeal rock format. because makingthose hard decisions might piss off listeners who don't think you're playing enough grunge. Or think you're playing too much alternative, etc

3. And speaking of listeners, it's so much cooler to just worry about subscribers. Hey, i wouldn't have to worry anymore if people are listening to my station, I just have to know they wrote this months subscription fee check. In fact, it doesn't matter if a subscriber never listens, as long as they subscribe, we're a success. (Ignoring that whole thing in #1 about making a profit of course. When I say success, I mean successful in getting them to subscribe, not successful like most buisnesses are considered a success, which actually involve making money)

The 'good' thing about satellite radio is that, depending on the station you're listening to, there could be a big absence of the over-played hits that terrestrial radio can not and will not do without.

But, it is just a listening experience void of the over-played c-r-a-p that the masses are force--fed.....

So for an incredible music experience, even satellite radio cannot deliver that.

They still pump in way too many of the rarer radio "hits" that are not in the terrestrial rotation bin....

So....satellite radio does not s-u-c-k..... but, satellite radio is nowhere near as cool and groovy as freeform radio done by someone other than a p-e-r-s-o-n-a-l-i-t-y......

The C-U-L-T .... of Personality.......

The anti-thesis of what AM radio was all about.

Satellite / Terrrestrial Radio -----

Neither of them still "Get It".....

But why should they.....

They are run by CORPORATIONS......

AMERICAN CORPORATIONS !!!!

Who know "The PRICE" of Everything......

And know the "The Musical Value" of Nothing,

except what the latest Justin Timberlake record can do......

If the Goons in the beltway don't totally botch it up....

Then there may be hope in Internet Radio.

I have no big hope for Music either satellite or terrestrial radio.

If only I would acquiese to the tastes of the coprorate radio companies......

If only.....

N-O-T

NO NOT EVER

NO NO NO NO NO !

No censorship. No fines.

On satellite you can play the original "Who Are You" by The Who as it was heard over the air for 20 years until it was edited recently. Same goes for "Money" by Pink Floyd, "Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller Band, "Life In The Fast Lane" by The Eagles and plenty of others.

Suddenly these songs are corrupting the youth of America & had to be edited. We are so much safer as a society now, thanks to a few who have nothing better to do.

Perhaps the main thing that's made both carriers unprofitable was their idiotic quest to pick up the audio rights to every major sport out there. One got NFL; the other ran out and got MLB. Then one got basketball; the other did double time to grab up hockey. That was a VERY costly move for both carriers, and Sirius made a vow of faith and hoped that they might recoup some money from that eventually...even when they were still charging $3 a month more than XM, and didn't have Howard. (Oh, and what does Howard cost?) Major coups are cool and all, but they have just about bankrupted both companies. Also, the lack of a clear and real marketing plan the last couple of years hasn't helped, either. Most satellite radios on display at Fry's, WalMart, etc aren't even operational, anyway.

And yes, XM does not play enough grunge. You'd think with that kind of format splintering, you'd have one channel that plays pop alternative from the 90s. Instead, it's 10 B-side songs no one cares about, then perhaps one token Stone Temple Pilots.

Back in the early days, profit was really not an issue to either company. The debt incurred just to put the satellites into orbit made both companies realize that profits wouldn't be had for many, many years. But 8 years deep into this, surely some investors are getting antsy.

Me, I'll keep supporting it, although I don't really side with the concept itself...but what's much different about it than what I get from today's terrestrial radio? (play sound of me writing that monthly check to XM for $14.02 [including tax])

With the price of gas inching upwards every day, who will even have money left for that XM or Sirius monthly check?

Well, I know when you drink beer.... you're really just renting it, 'cause it's returned anyway.

But renting pot ? ? I don't know about that.... It just all goes up in smoke, they say.. :D

The price of everything goes up, when gasoline does. Ya know, it costs the shipper $$$ to get that beer to the stores.
