Why No Black Talk Show Hosts ?

I

InsideTrakk

Guest
In light of Bill Bennett's controversial remarks on his Salem Broadcasting (WEZE/WROL) talk show, the question is raise: why are there no full-time Black (non sports)Talk show hosts in Boston. Levell Dyett is the only person of color on one of the major Boston stations and he is only on Saturday night for too short a time.

Isn't about time a WBZ a WRKO or a WTKK hired a full-time qualified Black talk host- man or woman. I know there are many qualified candidates out there and they are needed to address the likes of Bill Bennett.

Bennett is not on either WEZE or WROL.

Isn't about time you stopped popping up here with a new identity on a daily basis, parklane?

Since there has been much speculation here (and elsewhere) about big changes coming to talk radio in Boston (over several stations), perhaps there will be a black talk-show host on weekdays.

One problem is that most talk radio is conservative, and there are very few conservative African-Amercian talk-show hosts or hostesses.

Another is the financial state of radio and the pressure from The Street for broadcasters to cut costs. It's possible that some departing local talk-show hosts could be replaced not by locally-based African-American talk-show hosts (or hostesses), but by syndicated programming.

Those are all valid points, but they are also corporate excuses. Would like to see the NAACP Boston Branch speak up about this discrimnation. No Black talk host/hostesses is a disgrace for this so called liberal Boston.

Yeah, but he's on WTTT, their other Boston station.

I would think that the small African American population in Greater Boston (5%) is preventing this from happening. While the City of Boston does have a high percentage of African Americans, the entire Boston area does not.

Add this to how Joseph Gallant noted that most African Americans tend to be liberal (and clearly, WKOX/WXKS isn't hiring) and you'll see why none exist (at the moment).

Yes, I know that. But parklane didn't mention WTTT in his post.

Yeah, there was no need to mention the 2 stations that he was not on. WTTT alone would have sufficed.

And Lovell will be pre-empted more than a few times over the next couple of
months because of "shot--SCORE!!!"

Tom Joyner, WILD? Well, not technically talk--some music, too, but I guess
he does do some talk.

Larry Elder, exception that proves the rule.

Didn't Air America have Chuck D on as a "regular" of their morning show,
maybe still is?

Sean Hannity has featured some conservative black figures on his show as
callers/guests including Roy and Niger Innis of the Congress of Racial
Equality and Kevin Martin from
Project 21

I'm confused. Again.

So we're not supposed to discriminate based on race when it's against a minority but when it benefits a minority we're expected to blindly allow it?

Following your logic, the talk stations should have Affirmative Action hours where minorities get to broadcast, yet we're expected to treat them exactly the same as others?

The NAACP has bigger things to worry about, like real discrimination that impacts multitudes of people. A single talk show host doesn't matter anyhow, after all, we can't see skin color on the radio.

"InsideTrakk" did not need to list WEZE and WROL, but "coolidge"'s remarks made it appear that Bill Bennett's morning show is not being heard on the air in Boston.

At that point, you might as well add Russ Parr on WBOT as well.

> Larry Elder, exception that proves the rule.

True.

He was a daily host on "Unfiltered", which is no longer in production and has been replaced by Jerry Springer. Unfiltered was never heard on WKOX/WXKS in Boston.

Of course there are national African American hosts. I'd believed that the original topic was about the lack of local hosts, and if was, it's a good argument.

You are suggesting an implication that wasn't there. If I had meant to write that Bennett could not be heard it Boston then that's what I would have written.

Parklane, you are conflating race and culture - an attitude one might suggest is in fact racist itself.

Getting back to the issue at hand.....

A question for all -- do you think Boston would support a talk show hosted by an African American? It's been noted that Lovell Dyett has the Saturday show, that now will be pre-empted many nights by the Bruins. If there were a host on, say, in PM drive, say 3-7, do you think he or she could garner an audience, a large enough audience to make advertisers sit up and notice?

If that is so, then why didn't you write that Bennett was not heard on WEZE or WROL, but was heard on WTTT? It just seemed that you wrote what you did in order to prove "InsideTrakk" wrong, rather than provide information to the rest of the Boston board.
