Why No Urban AC - Cut to the Chase

Forgive me if i'm bringing up something old and off topic but I have not been on here in awhile. I'm not sure what you mean by Pandora-Fatigue?

"Pandora-fatigue" was talked about in the trades quite frequently a couple years ago. Basically, Pandora was leading in the total number of session starts but very few people listened for more than 90 minutes. That was coined "Pandora-fatigue" because people just didn't stick with it. The only pure play webcaster that had a TSL competitive with CBS and iHeartRadio was AccuRadio.

I like Pandora a lot, you design the station that you want. You push thumbs up for songs you like and push down for songs you don't like. I don't notice repetitiveness and if there is, then all you do is add more artists or songs to the mix. I have some stations that I don't hear the same song twice in days.

I don't hear the same songs over and over when I listen to Pandora, but I hear about the same three or four artists for really long stretches, or so it seems. While I understand you can add to the mix, I've never thought of radio as something I should have to work at to enjoy. I like the ease of just being able to tune in a station, whether by dial or click, and get on with my business. Yes, I favorite, ban and skip songs based on my personal tastes, but that's about all I do. I don't like "adding variety" because I'm usually in the car, at work, or on a walk when I listen to internet radio, and it's too distracting. The last thing I want to do is run into someone else, whether I'm in the car or on foot! Unless people's listening habits have changed since that study was released, there are a lot of other people who feel the same way.

As I may have mentioned before, I have most of the same issues with iHeartRadio's custom channels and originals. While it seems like it's gotten better, there was a channel they introduced as an original a few months back, I think either All 70's or All 80's, that literally played exactly the same songs in exactly the same order (minus the one or two I banned) from one hour to the next. That's far worse repetition than anything Pandora does, and I quickly found myself changing the station!

Pandora fatigue comes from people eventually getting bored listening to just music. Even satellite radio has had personalities from the very beginning to keep listeners engaged with their music channels. Maybe that's why the new Jammin' 103.1 hasn't done anything for me. I tune in and hear music, liners and commercials. And I should tune in again because????

One could say the same about Bob-FM as they don't have many jocks. I am glad they don't have a morning show for 103.5, and 103.1! I want to hear music when I wake up, not chatter as that is for my favorite talk radio station, KLBJ 99.7/590.

Speaking of Jammin they played a version of Dee-Lite's Groove's in the Heart haven't heard since the Q96 KSAQ days of November 1990 around 12 noon yesterday. Rare indeed. Jammin needs to play more extended versions.

Bob, Jack and the other variety hits/adult hits stations are actually designed for a high turnover rate. They don't expect a high TSL, which doesn't matter much because TSL isn't a sales metric. They do, however, rely on a large group of listeners coming back several times for a short stay. There are some stations in that format (or non-format, as some call it) that have jocks, though many don't. All of them have a high turnover rate.

You need to have a huge cume to survive the high turnover rate. Stations with smaller audiences need to carry their listeners through as many quarter hours as possible.

So anotherwards, unless the station is KHFI or in the Top 5 in Austin higher cume is what keep the stations format running, along with the advertisers continued repeat business.

Not quite. KHFI and the rest of the top 5 in terms of share are also the top-5 in cume. So, it's probably more accurate to say that the top-5 rank in the top-5 because of their higher cume.

As Fred mentions, ratings can also be driven by TSL. KUT would be a good example of this. It's #6 in the share wars but doesn't even rank in the top-10 in cume (it's 12th). So, you can see it's getting the same listeners all day. KLBJ, which is #7 6+ but 13th in cume, also appears to fit this profile. TSL, however, is not a sales metric as advertisers usually want to get their message out to as many people as possible. So, you need to get a large number of advertisers to take advantage of TSL. You might have a small number of them who feel they need to hit their target over and over to get their message to resonate, but I haven't met any.

96.3 R and B
Smooth 1560 AM
KAZI FM

At least people are thinking outside the box or maybe good radio
I'm starting to wonder about the experts on some message boards
