Why not try this in Monmouth-Ocean?

Of course, there's a very nice indie/classic alternative HD2 in Lincroft...

/shill? me?

When it is not off the air for days.

When was this? Not lately - it's been pretty solid since we switched to new software. It's reliably available on my commute...

(Seriously, call us if there's a problem. We're trying to work out the whole "alarms and text messages go out when things go pear-shaped" thing, but we can always use a hand if you're paying attention when we're not. Nobody can listen to a station 24/7, not even us.)

Can't help you on the HD part since I got rid of my Zune HD after getting the iPhone for a penny ;D Seems to be fine through TuneIn. Oh and now that there's a simulcast of WYRS on 91.7 in nearby Manchester Twp, I say oldies on 102.5 since they won't need that translator anymore, and dance on 96.7/100.7.

Actually, after all those statements about how fault-tolerant we are, 90.5 FM/HD1/HD2/HD3 will be off the air today (1/25) for transmitter maintenance.

Back at about 3pm, though.

Looking at the new numbers for Monmouth-Ocean. Scratch the oldies on 102.5, put it back on 100.1. Dance on JRZ HD2 and on 100.7 would make a mighty competitive player to Northern Ocean since B98.5 is heavily spotted in the Toms River area. Bringing a statement earlier regarding DriveFX in Poughkeepsie, NY, seems they are getting a good turnout that they are doing live broadcasts now.

http://www.facebook.com/drivefx

Monmouth/Ocean could get the dance (EDM) format in the bag, capitalize the advertisers, clubs, and other commercial businesses that depend on NYC to boost them up, and would have a great following. Hey, at least I'm aiming for translators and an HD2 feed to simulcast on, not a full blown market signal.

And WOBM-AM (1160/1310) and WHTG-AM (1410) on the terrestrial side. Shame that Press doesn't take 99.7 and simucast the AM on that...could do well in Southern Ocean.

Well, at least there's a choice for the oldies fans.

A lot of people have been writing about the lack of a Classic Hits stations in Ocean County.

My question: what do you define as classic hits? Keep in mind, we do have a classic rock station, 105.7 The Hawk. We have oldies stations, WOBM-AM and WHTG, and WOBM has flashback weekends. So what would a Classic Hits station provide that we don't already have?

At this point, I think it'd play Eighties Pop. Where can I get my Sussudio fix these days? Who's playing Debbie Gibson anymore? How about Whitney's most fun song, "How Will I Know"?

You know, all the stuff we were rebelling against at WHTG-FM back then?

In fact, here's VH-1's top hundred songs of the 80's. I think it should play this:

1. Bon Jovi / "Livin' on a Prayer" (1986)

3. Duran Duran / "Hungry Like the Wolf" (1982)

The Hawk is Classic ROCK...big difference between that and Classic Hits, both music and presentation wise. WOBM-AM and WHTG-AM are on AM...so for music they don't sound so hot - and power lines/stoplights kill the signal. WOBM-FM's Flashback Weekends are fine...during the weekend. But that's only 2 out of 7 days of the week - plus 90's/2k/Currents are mixed in during the weekends, with the exception of the Tom Kent programs.

WJRZ when it was classic hits managed to pull between a 2.5 and 3.5 consistently - despite being programmed haphazardly from Boston. If there was a local version of CBS-FM or WOGL, it would pull a 3 share no problem in Mon/Oc.

I think that what this market really needs is a full-time News/Talk station. Why is it that there are tiny AM stations in the markets to our north and south that can afford to put something together with a mix of local and syndicated talent, yet no one even considers giving something like this a whirl right here? Much of the market doesn't get the NYC or Philly talkers, and even NJ 101.5 doesn't always come in very well depending on your device. The local broadcasters are sleeping on a golden opportunity, which doesn't make the least bit of sense to me. What is it going to take for one of the many stations that repeatedly bombard us with the likes of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift to realize that they're not going anywhere and should instead provide the market with a station that people actually want to listen to?

You could STILL play some 80's if you were an "oldies" station. Anything from from '85 back is at least 25 years old now, and if you don't play a ton of them, they play nicely with late 60's and 70's hits.
Just my $.02.

People are not tired of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc. The problem is everyone wants to sound the same like sheep and they ruin the song(s) for everybody. When I play Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, I also play their songs that are remixed by Mike Rizzo, Moto Blanck, Manhattan Clique, etc. You can still make your money, get your product out there, at the same time research your music. What's the problem creating an "Identity" for yourselves? Nothing wrong with throwing a Rihanna or Pitbull in, but also introduce a new track or remix that can work both ways for the artist to get known and keep the music sales up, with more selection, attract more listeners away from the other stations people "have no choice" but to listen to. I must say tho, ever since I was putting TuneIn Radio and their mobile app out, I notices some FM stations doing the same.
