why wrff is the fasting growing station in america

Contrary to what many radio people think, personality, pompous over-ratted long winded jocks, contests, the usual sex and sports talk inbetween tunes is not what the listener wants. Its the music first, if you play the music that is missing you can have a puter run the show. WRFF proves this, fast, catchy comercials, little talk and plenty of music. Title and artist don't mean a thing in the set, most people know the inventors of the tunes anyhoo. Why oldies stations give the title and artist of music that people hear over and over is kinda odd. Bottom line, the era of the jock is long gone, stupid boring contests, sexual chatter and irritating bits are a thing of the past. WRFF will continue to rise because it fills a MUSIC gap, not a personality one, just look at the disaster known as YSP. If this is all true, Standards, Classic Country, Metal and other missing formats in the area can thrive because the music void is not filled.

I disagree. I find Radio 104.5 too bland compared to Y-100 or WMMR. Preston & Steve, Pierre, Jaxon, and Matt are all fun to listen to. Y-100 had personallity as well with P&S, Brett, Matt, etc and even back when Barsky was funny...

I agree that the station should have at least a live jock, someone to make the station feel ALIVE. But I can't say i don't like song after song after song after song. Their playlist is a bit all over the place, but again, no complaints here. Preston and Steve are standard morning radio, just localized. Pierre should be retired to the smithsonian once and for all.

What about new listeners? Isn't this a way of introducing old music to a new, younger audience? There are tons of kids out there loving the Beatles and Led Zepplin, with all the knowledge to go along with it, and hearing them on the radio might have been an influence to them. I like that Skin radio does it and there have been a couple times I've jumped to yes.com to see what Radio 104.5 just played.

Have they started running "Skratch N Sniff" yet? Oooooooo, you're gonna love it! It's a weekend show that mixes rock and hip-hop, and it's hosted by two guys that sound like they're right out of the Honda-Civic-on-35-inch-rims brigade ;D

Now that's clever...

From what I hear, its to the contrary, they are looking into having specialty weekends such as Punk, Rock of the 80's, Modern 90's, etc. This should make the station sound even better.

WRFF won't last a year if they do the programming the way you say. How would they make any money? No advertiser is going to shell out cash for haphazardness.

Jocks and more commercials are coming!!!!! I think RFF has become a little bland, it kind of reminds me of the end of the Y-100 era. When they started out they reminded me of a cross between Y and DRE.

I did hear Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt the other day on 104.5, which surprised the hell out of me.

As far as no one liking talk because RWS doesn't like talk, according to Klein the Preston and Steve show is the highest rated show of any kind on Philly radio. They double KYW's morning news, which is 2nd in mornings, and they triple DeBella's numbers (he is 3rd in the am). It seems that somebody must like a little talk, pranks, etc...They just don't like it when it lasts all day long, and is not funny or entertaining (YSP).

Being entertaining is absolutely the key. It doesn't matter if you talk for :20 seconds or 20 minutes - if what you're saying isn't compelling, entertaining, interesting, and/or funny ... just shut up.

Proof of this came once when my ex told me she preferred Preston & Steve to (her P1 station) 'XTU's Morning Show (whoever it was at the time) because the latter "talk[ed] too much." I said, "It's not that their morning show talks too much ... they're just not saying anything of any interest to you." "Oh." (Perception trumps reality, folks...)

Preston & Steve can talk for 15, 20, 25, 30 minutes ... and keep people listening, because they're doing something COMPELLING - like they always have. Now, it's just that more people know about them - thanks to Mr. Stern's departure, and WMMR throwing some marketing money behind them ... which is always helpful. ;)

But a PD once told me, "I'd rather hear a sweeper than a jock with nothing to say."

Words to live by.

I knew that would happen, I said it time and time again, the only reason MMR had a big spike was they were the only game in town. MMR is not a good Rock outlet IMHO and did good for the only game in town reason. My million dollar question, why is YSP still playing music as filler.....throw in the towel already and make up your mind or go back to your Classic Rock roots but play Classic Rock that Rocks not chicken MGK cuts.

RWS, i only listen to YSP onthe weekends, for obvious reasone. now if it were up to me, but clearly its not, i would just bag the talk and make ysp's weekend format permenant. i like how they mix the classic rock up with the modern, just like MMR does. i have to agree WRFF is a good station, i like how hey have few commercials, and its basically ALL music. and alot of the mjusic is stuff you dont hear too often. i heard Rusted Root - Send Me On My Way a few times, and Toad The Wet Srocket - All I Want.i dont know why, but for some reason i like to hear the old and the new together, rather than just new.but RFF is really good and i hope it NEVER goes away, which i dont think it will, but then again, thats what i said about WTHK. my sets look like this: <1> 93.3 <2> 105.7 <3> 102.9 <4> 104.5 <5> 94.1 <6> 107.5
so that right there should show you the way i like things. and judging by your other posts, your sets are probably VERY similar, am i right?

I agree with you 100 percent and always said if YSP would play the music they were famous for 24/7/365 they would be the best Active Rocker on the planet, but they wont and this talk sports and other things just does not jive with the music. It keeps people like me from listening. The question is what are they going to do come this fall, Active, All Talk, Classic Rock what but make it the only thing they do not this mix.

They, "YSP" always played a wide variety of Active from good Alternative to great Metal, their music was their strongpoint, I am talking from 1996 until they went with the talk thing a few years back. I have not listened to them in a few years, I had to suffer with MMR when I was not near my satellite systems but now WRFF has filled the void very nice, in fact I find I have them on in my car instead of Lucy, Ethel or the Boneyard. In malls, its WRFF on my Grundig, its a great change of pace. I have heard YSP plays music on the weekends, I would think its the Active they were famous for, but why on the weekends only, either go full blast or put it to rest for good, they should stop this useless fill.

If you would listen to them on the weekend you would hear what is still missing between MMR and RFF. Deeper, older tracks from Metallica, heavier Godsmack, Megadeth, the occassional Pantera song, and newer bands like Lacuna Coil. Their new slogan should be "94 WYSP, weekends that rock, weekdays that suck!"

i know what they did from 96 - talk...and they were far from the best active rock on the palnet then, and i doubt they would be now

Now that sounds like the perfect format for me and probably many others, the question is, why not 24/7/365, or should WRFF have done it. I guess YSP plays enough Active part time to prevent some other station from doing it. If you remember YSP dropped Classic Rock and some of their talk shows in 96 with the addition of DeBella, Cerf, Toxic and Grease playing Rock music, and a female on the weekends (her name escapes me but she fit perfect not like the phoney on MMR) but the music was fantastic and stood that way until 2001 I believe.
