WHY ???

...are all of CBS FM's STILL well below a 2 share in mkt number 4 ?

"Why??"

Maybe because CBS hasn't tried anything new, except for killing Free FM, and bringing back KFRC, which is still a work in progress. CBS has always claimed to be happy with the ratings-shares and demographics of Live 105 and Alice. Maybe they really mean that, when they say it.

At this point in time, I do not believe KFRC is not now a work in progress anymore. I think this is it. What you hear is what we are going to hear from now on. I'd like it to revolve, even to the previous 99.7 KFRC days. But now it is just there.

Uh - actually, I more-or-less agree with you KIFR. When I said a "work in progress," I meant in a ratings sense, because it has only been back for awhile, and many listeners probably don't know yet - meaning their ratings could improve. Also, like any station, jocks and playlists rarely stay static at any station for long, so KFRC can be tweaked.

When you say you'd like to evolve back to the 99.7 days, I would say that depends on what period you're talking about. IMHO, the playlist had decent variety, and was good until about 04, when they cut the playlist way back to about 300 songs (similar to the old K-Earth). That period was monotonous and awful.

After that, when they first switched from "Oldies" to that 70s soft-rock format, it was even awful-er. "Baby, I'm a Want You" over and over again.... ugh! Once they tweaked it back from soft-rock to Classic Hits, and hired Jo Jo Kincaid (just prior to MOViN), I would agree they sounded better than 106.9 does now. On the up-side, 106.9 has been a no-Cammy zone. That's no bad thing.

Remember that it is NEVER the overall ratings they're concerned with; it's the ratings for particular demographics. Each station (if they know what they're doing, anyway) has a particular target they're going after because as a marketer, you simply don't sell the same stuff to one group as you do to another.

KGO's listeners aren't going to be buying the coolest new cell phone; KMEL's listeners aren't going to be going to wine socials in Marin. Therefore, though a station might have low overall ratings, they may be high in a desired target demographic.

And this is what so many people can't get over: the total ratings (12+ AQH) don't really matter to anyone in the business of broadcasting.

Can't speak for all of 'em, but I defy you to hear the call letters within :15 on KFRC's morning show. I have to literally stop and pay attention to catch them! Maybe I'm old school, but you can't go asking John Q Public to "rate" you, when he has no idea what he's listening to.

With much respect to the Duke, this is NOT where he belongs. The chemistry w/Celeste is nearly non-existant, he's as quick as a moped at a stoplight and when he stops the music to do an un-funny bit, only to end it with the call letters over the first :01 of a :50+ second intro, this is not a listenable morning show.

Rather funny how the guy getting the brunt of the pre-launch "bashing", Jay Coffee, sounds BEST on the station. In my humble (and rather verbose, today) opinion.

New York cares about as much for ratings as DavidKaye cares for the 12+. The priority at corporate is revenue numbers, not arbitron numbers. By virtue of its target, Alice is easy to sell, and remains NY's sold out sweetheart, as do - or will do - the other stations in the group according to their ability to engage local and national buyers and connect them to listeners, whether ratings trend up or down. Book is an important tool for the job, but not the most important in the box.

I've been resisting that conclusion, but I've been listening more lately, and have to agree. Duke would be better in another time slot

I think it's "Coffey," and I have to admit, he's growing on me too - partially because they are not limiting his talk as much as they did in the beginning. And if you're being "verbose," what does that make me? Never mind, please don't answer that.

Ok, look at it this way: CBS doesn't have a station in the top ten adult demo, 25 - 54. KFRC is a work with no progress. And KCBS continues to under perform. In the narrower, harder to sell 18-34, 25-34 and 25-44 demos, Live 105 showed some upward momentum. Alice is headed the other way, with weak numbers in the usually stronger Women demos.

Well I like Coffey too. I think he sounds like what managment probably (maybe) hears/heard in their head as being the NEW KFRC Sound. As for the mornings, I like Celeste and Dave and I think they sound very comfortable together. But I do think there are some missed opportunities due to some flaky "live" production. I hear misplaced SFX's and kinda slow uptake on things that need audio punchlines. I also think Mark Neido is an under utilized resource. He has nice chemistry with both Dave and Celeste.
