WIBC Afternoons

Did anyone catch the impromptu Steve Simpson/Mel McMahon pairing on Monday afternoon? Dave Wilson was out sick and the two of them hit it off! I sure hope somebody in WIBC management heard the show - these two pair up wonderfully!

They normally pair up well on Stever's Indianapolis Tonight too. ;)

Something needs to be done with afternoons on WIBC, but I don't think Steve Simpson is the answer. Mel is good. I feel sorry that she has to work with current situation.

I enjoy Steve Simpson. He's very good at doing breaking news, and I enjoy his tornado/severe weather coverage, too.

Steve Simpson stands on his own well. After hearing Big Joe alone around 5:20AM the other day & hearing Dave Wilson alone, I think they need each other. Neither is a superstar on their own, but combined, at least they're passable.

That's what happens when people who don't come from radio do radio--you can only get away without the fundamentals for so long. More rumblings from Emmis... Expect more drive time changes after January 1. Any ideas?????

Hmmmmmmmmmmm I Wonder if the People at ABC/Hannity have gotten tired of being heard on a not even rimshot station aka Freedom 95.9 and managed to get out of its deal that it signed with CUmulus and got transferred would be my guess when Freedom took all of the FM Talk 93.9 line up last november. I Can See Hannity on 3 to 6pm on WIBC and Dave Joining Joe and Terri in the mornings come January. I never understood why Hannity's people even got through the deal of the downgrade from 93.9 to 95.9. they dump a Quality AM signal for an FM Station only to get dumped to a Barely Rimshot 7 months later after the move from 1430 to 93.9

What about Dave, Joe, and Terri in the afternoons and Steve and Mel in the morning?

"Steve and Mel in the Mornings on WIBC"

"The Big Show with Dave, Terri, and Joe"

Now that is something to think about!!!

Whatever they do, I hope that Stever's 6-8PM show stays put...good radio.

I really enjoy Indianapolis Tonight and listen on a regular basis. I particularly like that the markets have closed and Steve is really good at digesting business info. That being said, Steve and Mel could do a great "serious news" show in the AM if given a chance. I'm not really a Terri fan but I can see her working with Dave and Joe on a more lighthearted afternoon show.

I expressed concerns to WIBC management but wasn't really given much more than a "thanks for writing, please keep listening" response.

Something has to change around there. I think the frustration is evident on the air. Anyone hear Stan say "This is the dumbest show in radio" the other day?

Anyone hear the news guy at 9PM Thursday make reference to a 'lame dick congress'? He quickly said duck afterwards...but what a pro--didn't miss a beat. I would have busted out laughing.

Yes. I think it was Joe W. Sounded more like "lame deck congress" but he did manage to move right on. That made sense for him to do, but when they throw to a traffic report and there's nobody there sometimes they don't even acknowledge the fact that there was no report. It would make more sense to at least say 'we'll check traffic again soon".

It's obvious Simpson is the most relaxed guy there and actually sounds like he's the ONLY one on the WIBC roster that has ANY experience in radio. He should be the afternoon show - no question about it. Wilson is talented, but is not and has never been a 'radio guy,' and Terri just doesn't work with Pidgeon gone. Joe's not bad because he sounds comfortable as well, but not as a main host.

WHY isn't Simpson on during Drive?

I agree with Radio Ho, Steve is very good, although sadly, Pat Sullivan-the hardware/home improvement guy is right up there as being the best personality they have. While he's definitely not a hard news guy, Sullivan has a great sense of humor, and the timing to keep a show entertaining and informative. without sounding forced or immature.
I will disagree with many here who say that Mel McMahon should co-host with Simpson. She has a great radio voice, but is average at best in her current role as traffic chick, she sounds stiff and forced when reading sponsorship tags, and cold and arrogant when in conversation with Dave (or Steve). The best thing for her would be to give her some more years to develop a personality, then let her work into a real on air slot. Unfortunately for her and the listeners, the programming geniuses there will try once again to throw someone into a position they're not ready for nor capable of, and the wheel of change will continue a year from now, but this time she'll be the victim.

You're on the money with Mel. I have never heard a less interesting, less compelling person on-air. She's not particularly good at traffic reporting -- she mispronounces a major thoroughfare or otherwise butchers an easy accident situation at least twice a day. That might be forgivable if she brought anything to the table personality-wise. [EDIT]

Sure, Emmis may have needed to cut back from what Big John was making, but it doesn't matter how much you save when the resulting product is crap.

[EDIT-off topic]

[EDIT]

As far as WIBC in the mornings, mornings are supposed to get us motivated to start the day. Remember Fox 59 A.M. (like 1999-2002) They informed us with news, weather, traffic and and other tidbits, but they had fun doing it. It ain't easy waking up at 3 AM to do a three hour show, and be stiff about. Morning shows are supposed to be relaxed yet while bringing you relevant information.

Is this a case where the person doing the hiring is scared that if he/she hires anyone with real talent/radio experience that person may be promoted and take THEIR job?

Because whomever is in charge of these personnel issues is NOT hiring experienced talent. There must be a reason for this.
