WIBC - Depend On It

WIBC is making some subtle changes...adding in the term 'Depend On It', utilizing the ABC news sounder, having the image voice produce a lot of the stuff that was done live in the past...adds a nice polish to an already good news talk station.

Cheezy positioner. No worse than most of the rest of them, though. As far as news sounders and more activity form the VO guy, sounds good.

Having lived in the Indy area nearly 40 years ago, I remain interested in what is happening in the city. However, I can no longer keep up with the news there since WIBC abandoned the AM band over a year ago. The 1070 directional signal reaches Central KY day and night quite nicely.

Yes, I am an "old fart" that still likes AM!

I'm glad you started this thread.

I listen to Rush everyday and I've noticed the changes, and they sound good. They still have some old intros and IDs that have their last couple of voice guys. I hope they update everything. If there is one thing that bothers me as a programmer is inconsistency.

In terms of that, I wonder if they will add a bottom of the hour newscast during Rush? They do one during their local hours.

It only needs to be a :30 update, but that would make it consistent.

You most certainly can! You have internet, and you can listen to WIBC just fine online. If you can use this board, you can give them a listen!

True....But that doesn't work in my car....yet!

I hope that they do not over do it, ala WLW and Clear Channel news stations. I have heard what seems 2 minutes of self-promotion (VO guy
telling you to listen, when you already are) that could be used for something meaningful, like, say, news, weather, Dwight Freeney's ankle.

Yes... I've noticed the changes. What about the traffic reports and giving the speeds in particular areas?? With all the mentions of numbers ... its very confusing. I know they are utilizing the Ind. new technology for this.

Another note... Steve in the afternoons seems much less of him lately. Little
talk from him and a lot of news...traffic...and commercials!

Weather segments from 59 seem much shorter and recorded. No live segments anymore?

The traffic times are really not very helpful. In my opinion. It's the Traffic.com people trying to make Indy traffic reports sound like Chicago and other big city reports. What works there may not necessarily work here.

Do you think that Indy traffic listeners are used to hearing traffic the way Metro did it? Just report the accidents.

I talked to someone once from traffic dot com and he said that he was surprised that that is how we did our reports in Indy. He was wanting to change the way we did traffic here to be more like Chicago. "25 minutes from the Post Office to Central..."

Did he ever say why he wanted to do that?

...Traffic.com "Standardization"?

...To make Indianapolis sound like more of a "big city"?

I always found most Metro reports useless. I don't give a shit about an accident report. I want to know how it is going to effect my commute. "Chicago style" traffic reports do that. I have noticed a tightening up on WIBC. It will be interesting to see where they are going.

I think their new traffic attempt works well. When driving through Chicago, it's impossible to understand all their 'inbound' 'outbound' talk, but WIBC does a good job just giving the estimated speed limits. Even if you're not familiar with the roads, you know what it means when they say '465 between Meridian and Allison is 35mph' etc.

The Colts are a huge story, but when a WIBC newscast includes an interview with their sister station's morning guy talking about his boss asking him to come up with an idea for some C level country singer to do a Colts song, that's cross promotion, not news. Cross promotion is great but not in a newscast. It hurts their credibility.

Do they really need to repeat things (repeat things) so often in promos? That on top of the hearing aid spots makes you wonder if most WIBC listeners have hearing problems.

I like all the changes but the ABC news sounder. I think they are better off without linking their local news product to the network. Given that they don't run the ABC network cast, the ABC signature just sounds out of left field.

alot of stations that air local news and not the network newscast uses the network news sounder to leave into their news casts. WTAM in Cleveland uses Fox, WJR uses ABC, WHAS uses FOX

Wanna know what WIBC will sound like by the Fall book? Just listen to WLW. Alan Furst and Randy Michaels tweaked The Big One back in the day. You'll soon be hearing upbeat tag-team newscasts with shorter and sharper actualities, better use of reporter packages and highly produced, fast-paced promos and promo/sounders INSIDE the newscasts, etc. In other words, WIBC will wake-up from boring John Quick-induced slumber and become a station that's listenable.

I like Jon Quick, but have always preferred the fast paced sense of urgency that WLW conveys. I welcome this with open ears.

The WLW style sounds like a good idea to me. That's something they've needed for awhile.

I don't think Amber Sterns will be able to pull off a fast paced tag team newscast, though. She can't ever make it through a newscast with stumbling on something.
