WIBN off air

This has to be a good thing. If the station owner could use this to replace the okay tower with a Lambda section at the top it might help him get a better signal towards Lafayette. Nothing will improve Line Of Sight.

The old McMartin destroyed also? Always good when someone else buys a transmitter.

Hope the "farmer" has good insurance. I have seen towers pulled down with bush hogs, plows and such. The operators just not paying attention.

It was my understanding that years ago, there was an engineering study done that would enable them to move the tower up to 6 miles to the east without compromising power. If that study is still accurate, this may be the perfect opportunity to file to move the tower, increase tower height, and take a power drop to increase line of sight.

Does anyone know if the new wind farms in Benton County have affected WIBN's signal?

I looked at the photo in the Laf Journal and Courier and had the impression it was "a" tower (STL maybe?) as opposed to "the" tower. Maybe someone in the area can clarify

Wind towers are 300 feet or less and East of the tower. Used to be able to move. Any direction that doesn't go South to the rive bed of lafayette leaves the signal over about 30,000 people none of them in Lafayette.

WLFI had a cool picture. It was "the" tower, not their stl. It looks really cool on top of the transmitter building. Towers typically will accordion down in a circular manner. (even when an entire guy or an entire side of the guys are cut at the same time. Keeps the damage within a small area. This is exactly what happened. Here is the link to the cool picture:

http://www.wlfi.com/dpp/news/local/benton-county-radio-station-wibn-981-temporarily-off-the-air

Other neat thing. When you zoom (Hold the Control button and use the mouse roller) in you see a few wind turbine towers. They are 200 feet or less according to a few articles.

Normally farmers carry 1,000,000 aggregate liability insurance. Should cover this with no prob.

WLFI article says they'll be off for "At least a few days"? Come on now, unless they think they can get an STA to broadcast off someone else's tower, which I would doubt.

I decided to see where WIBN could move as a B1 and it's kind of stuck.

Gr8, that was THE tower. The STL was located approximately half-way up the 300' stick.

Chief, I think the assumption at the time may have been to grant some sort of an interference waiver with WLQI/Rensselaer, which is co-owned with WIBN, which would have allowed them to move eastward just shy of 6 miles. Could they get better penetration into Lafayette by extending the tower and taking a power drop?

The STL tower is at the studio in Otterbein. Otterbein being the thriving community it is.

Radio Info has more pictures. After I posted the WLFI link they posted a link to Dan McKay's home page. I called Dan yesterday and quite innocently noted I couldn't hear WIBN. He noted they are streaming on the internet.

The pictures show the tower took the roof off the transmitter building. The transmitter is still the old McMartin. ERI rototiller bays are sideways.

Rensallear is North and owned by Balvich. Battleground keeps the station from moving. If you take their tower crosshairs and then move it to a point that there IS line of sight to lafayette it is close to Attica. WLQI and WIBN could swap frequencies easily. This would allow CH 249 (WLQI) to move South and away from Earl Park ( a poor excuse for an allocation) and only leave one of the 2 stations serving corn fields.

98.1 to Rensallear, 97.7 to a town near Attica, and the AM stays in Rensallear. A tower just North of the current WIBN site would still hit Earl park a nd Rensallear. Given the lack of attributible population in Earl Park and the surrounding area I am not sure if justification for a 1200 a month power bill the B1 requires is worth the trouble.

Wouldn't WGNR-FM Anderson, IN also have to be factored into the study? They're a class B on channel 250.

Actually, the studio is in Oxford (Otterbein would be a step up) and they were using a fairly recent Harris transmitter until the day the stick came down. The Harris is one of three transmitters in the shack. The other being another Harris, which from what I understood, was utilized for back-up purposes and the old McMartin in the back corner of the shack, which currently serves the dual purpose of being garbage and a hotel for field mice and the occasional rat.

I chatted with someone from the station today, and from the sound of it, they'll be rebuilding on the same site. Its still fun to see what could be done with the station to make it more viable. I personally like the idea of flip-flopping allocations and moving 97.7 south toward Lafayette and Attica while downgrading 98.1 and moving it northward toward Rensselaer.

Just wondering......does WIBN Radio own their tower site?
The antenna site registration number is usually listed on the FCC web site...but not for this station. That makes it more difficult to answer this question.

Back many moons ago at WBZQ AM 1300 in Huntington, IN (then WHLT), the not-so-bright station manager wanted to increase revenue for the station and hatched a grand plan: Rent out the tower land to farmers to plant crops. Yep, didn't take long for a deep plowing event to destroy all the grounding cables. BRILLIANT!

yeah, good luck, he's a nice (previously overworked) dude. pretty crappy to be let go because there was no plan in place to keep the station on the air in the event of a tower collapse. Unlikely event, yes, unheard of, not at all.
