WICK

Is my computer acting up, or has the WICK/FOX Sports Radio thread been pulled?

I didn't see anything objectionable there. Please correct me, moderator, if I'm incorrect.

Well since the thread was lost, let me start it up
again. WICK was a great Oldies station. The move to
sports was on the surface puzzling but when you look
into it further, it makes sense. Bob V hired Bill
Brennan, a 10 year Rock 107 veteran away to run his
sales operation. Brennan was one of the sales pioneers
along with Jerry Papperelli (current 107 Sales Manager)
in putting Hot 97 on the billing map. The guy is effective
and very good. While Sports Radio is not a ratings
winner, it is a good biller when you are doing a combo
rate with a popular FM station. Plus, going head to
head with his old friend and mentor is just the type of
challenge that a sales guy like Brennan thrives on. I
think he and the station will do well and the timing of
it was to coincide with the kick off of the Red Barons
season.
I also predict that in a few weeks or months, The River
will be gone, replaced by an Oldies station with the
Duke of DooWop again at the helm. You have a few
elements going on here, 1. the premier oldies guy
running an FM, 2. no FM competition except for NAK
on the FM, 3. A low maintanence AM station that can
be combo billed with package sales to advertisers. That's
my take on it.
If I'm repeating myself from yesterday, I apologize
but the posts were lost.
Does anyone know what happened to the AM staff? Harry,
Annie, Joe Cruz?

No problem. Thank you for the clarification.

I think Kruz is also a salesman and Annie also works at Marywood. Harry looks like the odd man out.

What did we all miss? Did WICK go to all sports and the oldies are gone and so is the staff including Hary West? Please update us all.

Thanks

WICK went from oldies to FOX Sports Radio sometime on Thursday. Annie had left, Joe Kruz was also in sales. Looks like Harry is the odd man out.

I don't think it's a huge void, but will another station in the market flip to oldies? WARM has that format, but it's not promoted and the station has severe signal problems.

Hey, Yonkster.....No FM competition??? What are you babbling about here??? WGMF (Gem 1077) is oldies; is licensed and located to a community within the NEPA metro; has good coverage on 107.7 in Clarks Summit; the Backmountain (WWRR is not great here); and Wyoming County; has fair to good coverage along most of the East Mountain (includes communities from Jessup to Dunmore to Scranton to Avoca to Plains to Wilkes-Barre), decent coverage in much of the Pittston area, etc.; fair to good coverage in Carbondale (good in the Hill section of Carb. and much of the West side; WWRR has poor coverage in much of Carbondale), even coverage in central Luzerne County in Nuangola, Mtntop, Dorrance and even the the Northside of Hazleton (the 107.7 in South Jersey changed to 107.9 leaving a big 107.7 hole for clean reception going south).

Oh!!!! what about 95.3, the WGMF translator licensed to Wilkes-Barre city which has good coverage in about 75% of Wilkes-Barre city among other locations around Wilkes-Barre (WWRR's signal is no prize in parts of the Wilkes-Barre & Kingston area). With more translator possibilites on the horizon too.

Oh yeah....what about Sunny 105(WWRR's sister station) who have coverage in the northern half of Lackawanna county (good in Carbondale city) and have a translator on 101.7 there too? Why would they compete with themselves in this area?

Maybe WWRR will go oldies....but how about the ratings performance of WWRR...their highest 12 plus and 25 to 54 showing in 15 years (I think I can say this....right?)? Why would they blow up WWRR's most successful ratings effort maybe since the mid to late 1970's?

Don't mean to be so cutting....you got my Irish up!!

Re: Oldies or Oldieslike in NEPA

>Oh yeah!!!!!!!!!

What about WARM??

Or how about WFEZ changing their music mix to feature nearly 50% 60's and 70's much of the day???

Or how about Magic 93 adding many more 70's tunes recently (or it seems like that) (I heard KC & Sshine Band Get Down on there late yesterday afternoon...that's a real mainstream AC record). (Right now Magic's playing Have You Ever Seen the Rain by CCR...this is the 55th most played song on WOGL in Philly (based on their playlist of the past 12 weeks; I consider WOGL a benchmark oldies station) among being a top 100 Oldies station song at virtually every oldies station in America; not so much an AC tune though).

The list goes on of station's more oldieslike since 92 and 100 flipped formats.

WWRR would face all of this competition also.

All of those stations you mentioned are indeed oldies
formats and competitors BUT they are not direct, head to
head competition for the Wilkes Barre/Scranton market.
None of those stations WGEM or Sunny to my knowledge
have never been in the top ten ratings wise. While I'm
sure they are very good, (I'll check them out) they do
not or have not to date made a dent in the top 10 ratings
or sales numbers in WB/Scranton.
Yes, WWRR had its first significant rating since the 70s
but they will be oldies and it will happen very soon.

I really love that format. Despite the All Shannon All
the time stuff, the music mix is wonderful.

Not heard them yet. Have to tune in on my day off.

I try to avoid Magic. I like WOGL. They play it a lot at
Cinema 309.

True, but I believe they'd do very well against all of them.

I heard a rumor Harry is interviewing at WNAK this
week.

1. Magic is heard in some places I visit(Ollie's, Salvation Army). One time,
the K-Mart off Rte. 309 in W-B had the station on, but this was during their
"70's at 7" hour. We were trying to find my brother a thicker coat then.

2. If any station decides to go oldies, I would pick WNAK. They mix in 60's and 70's along with Frank Sinatra and others. Maybe soon they could go all oldies because they have a better signal coverage in the greater NEPA region.

LOL- They use to to play oldies 99.9 out of easton before the flip to the hawk.

Monday afternoon... FSR feed and local commercials have been running simultaneously. Don't they listen to their own station? It's been happening for hours!

I'm going to have to go along with this thought. It would be a truly stupid move for The River to make the switch to Olides, no matter how much The Duke wants his Doo-Wop. Their numbers are up and they seem to be quite successful. I hear Jude out on remotes all the time and their listeners seem to be responding well. I don't see them flushing all that for a format change to satisfy someone's ego. It would make more sense for NAK since they're already halfway there.

WNAK would be a great spot for both Harry and NAK. Hoep it comes to be.
Good luck Harry

Well, now that they have a station that 'the scott will control', no need to pay attention to it. That, or shame on FSR and their trigger happiness :)
