WIHS 104.9 now in stereo

An increase in signal and a change in format would do WIHS well.

WIHS has had a permit to upgrade from 3.1kw at 96 meters HAAT to 5.8kw at 100 meters HAAT... twice. The first permit was granted in 2002 and expired unbuilt in 2005... they reapplied and were re-granted in 2005 and that permit again expired unbuilt in 2008. There's short spacing to WSPK Poughkeepsie and WWLI Providence, but an upgrade is possible.

They have a fairly new Harris Z 5 transmitter and pretty decent transmitting facilities, I don't see any reason why they don't re-apply and actually do the upgrade.

As for a change in format, that's not gonna happen. I hold nothing against religious broadcasters that are actually locally owned and are producing local content. While not as entertaining, I think it serves people better than anything EMF cranks out. I'm not a fan of K-Love or Air1.

I've always wondered why a station applies for a permit to increase power and then never takes advantage of it? If you've done your homework and gone through the process, then do it!!! WCTF did the same thing in 1992, applied to the FCC for an increase from 1000 watts to 2500 watts and never went forward with it.

From my understanding, the reason they opted not to do the upgrade was, they would lose more than they would gain by going directional. Honestly, they have a very good class A signal as it stands. It covers the market nicely, and fills in what they want for service.

I would definitely welcome reception reports and comments about the audio quality, etc, when we are in mono vs when we are in stereo. The best program material for this is, of course, music... the more modern/contemporary stuff, specifically, since it originated digitally.

There is also a radio drama program called "Adventures in Odyssey" which airs at 3:30pm, daily. That program has a significant amount of well-done stereo sound imaging, and is of excellent quality!

Necrat is correct... going directional would have "cost us" too much coverage. Those decisions were made well before I got there, so that's all I know about it.

Meantime, my job includes equipment upgrades, etc... and I appreciate the feedback of folks with audio experience, such as can be found on this BBS. :) Thanks, all!

Is money the only reason why the station was always in mono until now? I've never had a problem with the station's signal here in New Britain's south end, just so you know.

So no Jewish HD-1, Muslim HD-2 or Buddhist HD-3, eh?

Thank you! :)

How about while it's in stereo? :)

Same thing. I don't really notice any extra noise at all.

There wouldn't be. Most modern radios just blend it out when the signal gets weak. I hear it all the time on Dunes 102 on the Cape. Its mono when I hit the bridges and slowly blends into stereo when I get near suicide alley.

Yes, exactly! Since, what, the mid 1980's, radios have had very effective "blend-to-mono" circuitry, which makes the stereo/weak-signal noise factor of the 60's and 70's a total "thing of the past"! :)

If you have an Internet connection, or can stream on your Smartphone, the station is available that way. :) Just go to the WEBsite: www.wihsradio.org

Thanks for the valuable feedback. :)

"Stay Tuned".....

Looking... Its also on TuneIn Radio, an aggregator of streams. There is a bit of a hum on the stream. You probably need a balanced/unbalanced conversion dealie.
