WILD FLIPWATCH ALERT!!!

Yes, Maroon 5 started alternative with their first song. Then, well, something happened to their music. Like No Doubt, Maroon 5 switched their direction and went more mainstream pop. You will NOT find Maroon 5 on an alternative station today... at least not their new stuff.

That's actually not true - Harder To Breathe was their first single (and the one that charted on Alternative), but at that point their next 3 pop singles had already been recorded

I think that Harder To Breathe probably would've gone Top 10 Alternative except that people listened to the rest of their album and realized they were out of genre

I found this on the Radio 105.7 facebook page. I admire how the dj's are interacting with the listeners.

Radio 105.7 We have to keep things tight to introduce the station to Atlanta. It's the only strategy that works. We'll air things out a bit once we've established ourselves...but kicking things off playing a bunch of unfamiliar songs is a death sentence. Just trust us on this. It's what we do. ~Aly

Radio 105.7 Radio isn't programmed toward people who listen for 12 hours in a row...because the average listener doesn't. Call me sometime during the week, and we can talk about it. It's easier to explain that way. Thank you SO much for checking us out and for your feedback! ~Aly

^I think she did a good job explaining their strategy - One thing they could do, though, in the meantime IMO is air a specialty show late Friday or Saturday night with new/cutting-edge tracks

The part about not programming for people that listen all day long I don't think is going to change - they know what happened to Dave-FM, so they're being careful not to recreate it

Just like you won't find an Adele song on Alternative anymore even though she also got her start there. I do still here No Doubt, at least early songs, on alt stations occasionally. I have a feeling even though Fun. was definitely alternative IMO when they started, they may be a group that drops off alternative stations a year from now, depending on how their sophomore album goes. Mumford & Sons, on the other hand, I think will stay an alternative staple regardless of how "country/bluegrass" they may be. This wasn't their first album. And I don't see them going in a "pop" direction.

But it's ironic that bands that go in the other direction, like Radiohead, who got more alternative over the years, get little airplay other than their biggest hit, "Creep" on most alt stations. To me, that's actually one strike against alternative for not really sticking with bands that are truly different.

Radiohead has had 13 Top 40 hits on the Alternative chart, spanning 1993-2011 ("Creep" was the first of them) - 3 of those went Top 10, and 7 of them went Top 20

If you're talking about Radiohead not getting played currently, I know that 105.7 plays High & Dry and Karma Police (in addition to Creep)

That's what I meant and a lot of alternative stations do only play "Creep". But 105.7 does seem do dig a little deeper into their '90s cuts.

I have to say now that I have listened (mostly while commuting and some at home in the evenings) since the station signed on, I am impressed with their playlist and I love the fact that they are interacting with the audience. Local jocks who engage with their audience and help generate enthusiasm for the station and for the music are a key item that corporate radio has all but thrown away.
So kudos for having some local talent. Hopefully it will eventually all be local talent after they get settled and established.

They're doing a great job and I am enjoying the station.

Yeah, about that...I noticed that Mike Jones appears for evening shift not only on 105.7's website, but also on DC101 and Radio 104.5 Philly

Does he sit in a studio somewhere and rotate voicetracks between three different stations? The music on all three stations, that he specifically announces, is different...

Roche and Mike both VT out of DC101. Not sure when their other shifts are but their DC101 shifts follow their shifts on 105.7. So go into work, hit the studio and do three on-air shifts back-to-back, one of them being on the station you're actually working at.

That would suck. It's been a long time since (late '80s/early '90s) since I lived in Washington, DC, but I had no idea that they had changed to Alternative after being a more mainstream/classsic rock station. But DC101 is strange now. They primarily play alternative, but mix in AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc., on occassion? The Planet, WTPT, in Greenville USED to do the same thing as an active rock station, but finally dumped the older stuff when X98.5 came around. Before that they were mocked for calling themselves "New Rock" and still playing those classic rock tracks. But it's even stranger to see it in the playlist of an alternative station. Cutting edge alternative with 30-40 year old classic rock. Hmm...

Correction, their DC101 shifts are followed by their 105.7 shifts. I got it backwards. Need more Caffeine or something.

Is it me or does 105.7 seem to be playing less '90s alt than they were at first? Still not entirely "current" with their currents, but just also seems like they've cut back on the gold tracks. One thing I do like about the station is they don't play a whole lot of grunge, but still wouldn't call them Hot AC/Modern AC playing things like Soundgarden and Incubus.

I noticed it as well. They are adjusting to the waters and seem to be doing it fairly well. I like the fact that it's not so repetitive and there's a good dose of variety on the station. This is the first thing CC has done in years that I have really liked. Kudos to them and again, to Ali for responding to audience tweets.

would love to see them try this style of alternative in other markets. Reminding me slowly of q877 out of Chicago especially with the interaction from the djs. Actually think i like this better then radio 104.5

So I have spent the day listening to Clear Channel alternative stations from around the country via I-Heart radio. Most of them all sound the same with an a good bit of active rock sprinkled in. Radio 105.7 stands out a little different. I know they will spread their wings some on down the road but right now, I'm trying to determine which direction they are going. Well, Radio 105.7 stands out different from ALL clear channel stations except one..... Yes.... I predict Radio 105.7 will be a carbon copy of Radio 104.5 out of Philadelphia. The jingles, advertising adds (acoustic cuts) all come from Radio 104.5. You could easily say it's a Clear Channel or I-Heart radio thing but no, it's a Radio 104.5 thing because Radio 104.5 has always stood out from all other Clear Channel stations and I think 105.7 is going to follow suit. I'm stoked!

^I agree - but I think the spin numbers are gonna be higher, and the playlist a little more conservative, unless CC can find someway to reach Buckhead/Midtown/etc.

Still, that's one of Clear Channel's most successful Alternative stations, so I'm just as stoked!!

I'm pleased, Clearchannel seems to be releasing the over produced overly high energy rock radio format of the 90s simply doesn't work in 2013--that was the downfall of every atempt at Rock CBS has done in most markets. Inteligent presentation, understated but snarky/fun imaging and on air talent work very well.
