I think that's partly because Route 2 seems to be predominantly an easterly facing gradual uphill slope for that stretch in that area, almost like a natural "amphitheater" for FM signals from the Boston area, which is at a lower elevation.
Even relatively weak non-comm stations from the Boston area such as WMBR, WZBC and WUMB come in better than you might expect from that distance, even after having been "lost" on lower parts of Route 2 a bit closer to Boston.
Route 2 seems to level off past Fitchburg toward Gardner, giving more of an open terrain for signals from the north and west.
