WILD-FM

Just curious. Is the WILD-FM antenna on the WGBH tower on Great Blue Hill (hence the call letters if you didn't know) or is it on a seperate structure?

I was in downtown Boston the other day, and WILD-FM came in very strong, by the way.

It is on the WGBH tower, a 2 bay antenna, mounted on the side.

Yup, it is a two bay Shively antenna mounted below WGBH-FM's auxiliary antenna on the lower side of the short tower.

I haven't been in Boston since early November (I live in central Connecticut). Is their coverage any better now than the crappy signal I remember in downtown Boston? The only station I get around here is a very weak WCTY-FM 97.7 (Country) out of Norwich, CT.<P ID="signature">______________

It's much better in Boston's urban neighborhoods than it was from their old Avon/Brockton site due to their proximity to Blue Hill. It's now loud and clear there. It's pretty good downtown as well (though in some places Prudential intermod interferes with anything that's not up there), and somewhat better than it was in the suburbs. It still doesn't do very well north, northwest and west of the Route 128 loop due to WOQL Winchendon MA.

Thats pretty odd though b/c when you travel near Fitchburg on Rte 2, 97.7 is pretty much all WBOT er. WILD the whole way. I really didn't start notcing WOQL until I got closer to Gardner.

I think that's partly because Route 2 seems to be predominantly an easterly facing gradual uphill slope for that stretch in that area, almost like a natural "amphitheater" for FM signals from the Boston area, which is at a lower elevation.

Even relatively weak non-comm stations from the Boston area such as WMBR, WZBC and WUMB come in better than you might expect from that distance, even after having been "lost" on lower parts of Route 2 a bit closer to Boston.

Route 2 seems to level off past Fitchburg toward Gardner, giving more of an open terrain for signals from the north and west.

Yes, I am aware of that. I was just making a point of how the East facing hills in Fitchburg and the hills that make up the line that goes south towards Worcester help WILD and hurt WOQL.

Interestingly enough, in Nashua, NH it's almost all WOQL - and it's mostly WOQL as far east as Salem, NH. The switchover is now around I-495, though even there you lost WILD-FM between Westford and Littleton - not to be heard again until south of the Mass Pike in Westborough.

For the record, WOQL's signal seems almost too good for a Class A. It's performance into the Merrimack Valley is far better than that of the stronger WKNE-FM. And, there's nary a wisper from any other Keene market signals in that area.

Because it is the only Keene FM that is actually EAST of Keene. And its location places the antenna system south of some of the bigger hills so it's all line of sight through the valley. (The transmitter is on Rte 12 just north of 119)

The other Keene FMs are located North or West of the city.

WEVN 90.7 is on the WEKW-TV tower in Walpole
WKNH 91.3 is on the Keene State Coll. Campus
WINQ 98.7 is on West Hill in Southwest Keene
WKNE 103.7 is on the WEKW-TV tower in Walpole
WYRY 104.9 is on Cat Den Mountain in Hinsdale
