WILKS gets CBS Denver?

I haven't heard of this company until today but there is word out this morning that WILKS has bought CBS's Denver stations. I don't have alot of details but thats what I've heard.

Rumored from a Wilks market (KC,) on a Kansas City radio site...

"Wilks, loaded with cash, bought 3 cbs stations in
denver...mix format/oldies and one other. Not
yet announced but he has deep pockets to bail
out huge debt of major owners..."

Not the best news if you work for CBS/Denver.

How many still work for C(BS) Denver? For example, isn't KXKL now
voicetracked or syndicated in all dayparts except AM drive?

I had a friend who worked for some stations that were taken over by Wilks in Springfield, MO in the previous incarnation of the company. He described Wilks as coming in and saying something to the effect of, "We're radio people, unlike the previous group you worked for. We understand radio and its people. We want to make this work because we're in it for the long haul."

Then, he said the story changed considerably after they arrived. Almost as soon as they got the keys, they said, "We lied. We don't care about you. We're an investment firm, and we'll be out of here before anyone realizes just how bad everything has become!"

From what I've heard from the people at Wilks in Kansas City, they're not as bad as the previous incarnation, but that doesn't make them good. A friend there said there was no group discount on health insurance, and (s)he effectively said Entercom was following their lead in terms of not offering a 401(k) match. So, everyone effectively got a pay cut.

Wilks in its new incarnation isnt nearly as terrible as its last, but they are still an investment firm.

The Columbus cluster and Kansas City cluster aren't terrible, but they haven't done as much as they promised. They do market the stations, which is good..but they realize to make money, the stations have to perform.

Heaven forbid a station has to perform...if that is the case, then Wilks would just go dark with 92.5, and half the signals that hit the Denver ADI would go dark.

That is the issue with Denver, way too many sticks, over-radioed for the population, and some bad radio at that.

Wilks would be no different than most the owners, maybe they are just honest about how crappy they are to folks. If you are gonna serve me garbage, at least tell me it is so instead of trying to make it steak.

God help everyone left at CBS Denver. Wilks will come in and slash everything to the bone and then some!!! If this incarnation of WB I would have hated to see the original...... sheeeeeeesh!

Last week, the Dept. Heads at CBS radio Denver (and the other 10 fulltime non-sales people that are left) were told they were bought by Wilks and to expect some changes. Rumor has it that 92.5 the Wolf will flip to top 40 as they have already pegged ex-KUBE (Seattle) and KROCK (NY) PD Mike Tierney to take over the helms. Does that mean Bill Gamble is out or does he get the GM gig and Don Howe is finally getting his just reward? All I can say is, morale at CBS is the worst I've ever seen in any company and Wilks is supposed to be worse! It can't get worse! Mix is a disaster- is it AC, CHR, or hybrid? It's an ALICE wannabe from what I can tell. Didn't this attempt at going younger & after Alice fail miserably for them back in 2004? It took PD John Roberts to come in and put MIX #1 W 25-54 for 3 out of 4 books last year and because of that success, they promptly fired him? Hmmmmm. Their newest trend show a 1.9. Nice work. The Wolf loses $500K /year so it is obviously a goner. If CBS kept it, I suppose they would've gone to a CNN syndicated news format but with Wilks and the Mike Tierney sighting, I'm guessin CHR. KONN (107.1 One-fm) is the only CHR in Denver and they have low signal strength. I just don't get going after 12-24 year-olds when nobody that age gives a crap about radio... nor do they have any disposable income for appeal to advertisers except bars that close & never pay their bills. Open your eyes radio companies!!!

As one that has been rear ended by the Howe Gamble "out of the box" thinking, this is fun news. Karma is a biatch and Santa is backing up a coal train to these idiots. I feel bad for friends that are still there, it must be miserable and I wish them all the best. CBS and Dan Mason have done a ton to ruin what was once the Tiffany network. The events of the last few months in the financial world have soured anybody with a brain to executives who take the money and leave ruin in their wake. Remember Ken Lay? Higher power has the last word boys!

It's interesting to see how many people here never did a true search on this company... If you all did that you would find this out:

"ATLANTA, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Wilks Broadcast Group LLC, an affiliate of The Wicks Group of Companies, L.L.C., today announced that it has completed the previously announced $138 million acquisition of radio stations in Kansas City and Columbus from CBS Corporation . The stations included in the transaction are KFKF(FM), KBEQ(FM), KMXV(FM) and KCKC(FM) in Kansas City, and WLVQ(FM), WHOK(FM) and WAZU(FM) in Columbus.

About Wilks Broadcast Group

Wilks Broadcast Group, LLC was established as a platform to acquire and operate radio broadcasting stations in attractive mid-size U.S. markets. With the acquisition of the Kansas City and Columbus assets WBG will operate a portfolio of 18 FM radio stations across five markets including Kansas City, Columbus, Fresno, CA, Reno, NV and Lubbock, TX. "

That folks is who Wilks broadcast group really is. If they really did buy the denver stations good, becasue then Mix 100 can get a face left and 92.5(that has been almost every format possible) if they went top 40 good luck to them since there isn't a true top 40 station in this area at all.

You're reading the company's own PR. No company says anything bad about itself in its own PR. If you listen to what they say about themselves and compare it to what gets reported in the news and what people who have worked for them say about them, they sound like two completely different companies.

Check these pages out at the Iowa Media Resource Page: http://www.geocities.com/iowamedia/arch3-4-2001.htm, http://us.geocities.com/iowamedia/arch5-6-2001.htm, and http://www.geocities.com/iowamedia/arch7-8-2001.htm.

Also, check out these threads from the Columbus, OH board to see what happened when they took over the CBS properties there: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,50613.0.html and http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,52847.0.html.

That's what Wilks has done. There's what they say, and there's what they do. The two aren't necessarily the same.

Remember the old "be careful what you wish for" adage? Of course, one of the bright spots for those working at CBS in Denver is that CBS has already cut almost all there is to cut. So, Wilks really won't be able to cut much more.

Yeah, well now that it is a done deal, lets see what he will do with those stations? I just hope he doesn't get rid of the K I M N call letters one bit but tweak 100.1 to make it better. WIth the wolf(who knows that 92.5 frequency has been almost every format under the sun almost). For KOOL well that station has already went down hill really fast when it modified it's self.
This is a good question..

What do you all think Jeff well do with 100.1.105.1 and 92.5?

Actually its not a done deal yet I think it has to be approved by some people first. As for 105.1 not sure but for 92.5 they should bring back Willie. Not sure what needs to be done with 100.3.

It's amazing in this Town that everyone wants 92.5 to Remain COUNTRY. Lets see Country was tried on 92.5 back in the 90's Big Dog Country KZBD if i'm not mistaking....plus you have 98.5..KYGO There is 97.9 which is country.........Why do you have 15 thousand COUNTRY STATIONS in this Town.

CBS runied what was a Good format of CLassic Soul and R&B by Killing Jammin for yet ANOTHER COUNTRY station. It's ashamed How many Damn People on this board always wants COUNTRY to stay. You already have enough of this Format ::) ::) ::) :'( :'(

Calm Down will you? The only reason CBS got rid of Jammin was ratings.

Because CBS didn't want Jammin to make it and Promote it properly. It was the only place for Classic R&B and Soul & Disco, why didn't they Flip Mix 100 to Country....Mix isn't doing any better.

Good point about Mix. So what do you think Wilks should change 92.5 to besides Jammin?

If you look at the History of 92.5 you will see that some of the formats already tried was Country--KZBG (Big Dog) then Alternative(Z Rock)
KVOD CLassical (now on 88.1) KDJM Classic Soul..which wasn't promoted right...Now KWLI Country AGAIN

How about Top 40 maybe..more a upbeat format of music...a little dance maybe....something Up tempo would be nice.....

bringing back Jammin's format would be a miracle......but how about try something other then country??????
