will 105.1 flip to urban ac ?

with 98.7 moving to 107.5 will clear channel dump the hip-hop for Urban ac it will be intresting too see what goes down

Power 105 exists specifically to compete with Hot 97. So as long as Hot remains in its current format I would not expect any changes at 105.1. If the new BLS starts tearing it up in the ratings then maybe that would eventually give 105.1 some incentive to flip.

How about Fresh 102.7 adding a few Urban/Rhythmic AC songs to its playlist? If it catches on, we could see a new trend with the AC format :)

Geez I hope not. We already have a major oversaturation of rhythmic music in this market. Even Lite FM has been playing a lot of rhythmic cuts.

Don't forget about WKTU, which does cut into the Urban AC universe a bit with their format. It's possible that between Kiss, BLS, KTU, and the various AC's, there were too many stations targeting minority adult women. I can't see 105.1 joining that crowded field, especially with Hot 97 being in a precarious position and WKTU being their sister station. I think they stay the course and see what Emmis eventually does with 97.1...

WKTU can always modify its format from rhythmic to urban for adults to fill the shoes of a second urban AC in New York. It is a huge market, and it would not make any sense for the #1 radio market to be stuck with just one urban AC, so this would make sense to transition KTU. Besides, Clear Channel owns urban AC stations KHHT, WVAZ and WDAS in the Top 4 markets, so if WWPR can tackle WQHT then WKTU can tackle WBLS directly. KHHT tackles KJLH, WVAZ tackles WSRB and WDAS tackles WRNB. Think about it now.

As for the idea that WWPR should go adult, the only way that will ever happen is if it patterns the urban ac format specifically in the old school hip hop vein. Think KDAY. If LA can have an old school hip hop station, then NY can too, primarily due to its roots here.

Power 105.1 WAS Urban AC before I dont think they want to go Backwards Plus I think 105.1 has hit it's lifetime format flip limit. ;)

htowler,

WWPR-FM (Power 105.1) has been in this Hip-Hop/R&B format for 10 years going head to head with (Hot 97) WQHT.

I think when the May Abriton comes out sometime next month and it shows that WBLS doubles in its ratings with over a six share coming close to overtaking WLTW, don't be surprised if Clear Channel flips Power 105.1 to an Adult AC format.

Thanks,

I'm curious to see what happens with the WBLS ratings. I really don't think they are going to double like many people believe. That theory would assume that there was a distinct group of people listening to only WRKS that did not listen to WBLS before. I would think these 2 stations had a lot of overlap in listenership as they were very similar. I'm a big fan of R&B music and speaking for myself, I flipped back and forth between the 2 stations rather equally. I do think the ratings for BLS will increase, simply because now you will have the same people listening exclusively to BLS, rather than spending some time on Kiss.

CC put Power on 105.1 to fragment Hot 97's audience enough to keep Lite-FM on top of the NY ratings. That strategy has worked. With Hot 97's future in doubt, CC would be wise to stay the course with Power 105.1. WWPR might soon be the only game in town for HipHop. If Hot 97 flips, CC will stand to inherit their listeners, who in that event would have nowhere else to go. :)

105.1 will compete against whoever is the bigger threat to Lite So Urban AC might not be out of the picture for them. Or could they USE KTU or Maybe even Q? All are pawns to protect the Queen WLTW. Z they won't touch.

There is nothing "Urban" about WKTU. Drive through the black neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Newark. You wont hear a single radio tuned into WKTU. Latino radios, yes. Black radios,no.

If anything, WKTU and WLTW will get more listening, as there is now one Urban AC. If BLS is playing a song a listener doesn't care for, those two stations would be probable alternatives. PPM measures those listening changes, something the diary really couldn't do. It makes no sense to over react at this point. KTU as is performs extremely well, and has a high cume. Why alienate that audience? 105.1 is poised to be the Hip Hop leader if Hot 97 goes south, and while I could see WLTW adding some more R&B to their mix, there won't be any drastic changes there. I'm sure Kiss and BLS shared a lot of audience, so BLS's bump may be very minimal, maybe a share and change. In the long run it might be better to have one healthy Urban AC than two struggling ones.

I guess this is to be expected. But they are hammering the whole ppm process on Kiss fm right now. Also to be expected, Bob Slade made a good point that if you don't own the station you are at the mercy of corporate maneuvering. Speaking as someone from Boston I't could be worse.

yea you could have your urban ac stuck on am radio leased by the chinese!!

Boston has a higher Black percentage than Seattle, yet Seattle has an Urban (KUBE 93) and Boston doesn't have a single licensed Urban on AM or FM...

When they tried Urban AC here in Albany, NY around 2004, it failed not due to poor demographics but due to poor programming (they still kept some of the smooth jazz imaging/formatics even after the tweak to Love FM)... it could have worked if they added some syndicated programming and taken cues from stations like BLS and Philadelphia's WDAS :)

We used to have two urban stations Hot 977 (urban contemporary) and am1090 Wild Urban ac/gospel). Also Jamn morphed into more urban leaning chr. After a few blunders by Radio One and a phat 30 plus million dollar check from Entercom. 977 went bye bye and we are learning about the rich culture of China on 1090. Also Jamn went back to embracing there old rhythmic pop selves. ::) So ya New York. It could be a WHOLE lot worse.

Similar deal in CT. The only Urban AC station in the entire state is WYBC, and their signal is confined to New Haven county.

KUBE isn't Urban. It's a CHR/Rhythmic. Like WJMN in Boston, it's the de facto Urban station for Seattle, but it's not a full blown Urban like 105.1 or WUSL in Philly. Technically, Hot 97 is also a rhythmic, not an urban station but they've always been a special case.
