will 105.1 flip to urban ac ?

I haven't listened to 105.1 in a while, as I have always considered them a harder version of 97.1. However, I think CC will stay the course and see if 97.1 throws in the towel at some point in the future.

Power sounds better than Hot these days.. Hot seems to play harder Hip Hop (Rick Ross all day) while Power has more R&B in the mix...

I rarely listen to 97.1 or 105.1 anymore, but when I did, I found 97.1 to be the more edgier of the stations, playing harder hip-hop, freestyle, and more local artists. 105.1 was always more cookie-cutter, playing the "safer" urban hits that you would hear on pretty much any urban station across the country.

You watch....WKTU goes Urban AC...Why? Cheap Channel will stop at nothing to protect WLTW from losing not only the top spot, but also losing money...<Is that greed or not??

Open for discussion.

Changing KTU only opens up WLTW to further attack. WKTU is doing well as is. It's the stepdown station between Z100 and WLTW. The Urban AC audience isn't big enough to sacrifice the hispanic and white suburban audience WKTU delivers. WBLS will bump up with Kiss going away, but not enough to be a threat to WLTW. Things will stay as is for the forseeable future.

You're kidding right? KTU is one of the most successful stations in NY. It's an excellent flanker to Lite and Z-100. Urban AC? Not a chance. You have a better chance at seeing country or talk on KTU than seeing another Urban AC on FM.

We have enough urban stations as it is. Sucks that one had to go though. 105.1 shouldn't go. I don't want 97.1 to go either. But I do want alternative rock or at least some rock station here in new york and make it successful. 105.1 would never switch formats anyway because its basically been like this for a decade. They finally have their niche. They're not leaving. KTU finally is doing well after in the mid 00's they had difficulties. 106.7 is #1 and Z is heritage and you can't mess with that. Personally, I think KTU should take complete dance like Pulse 87.7-why not just copy Pulse's playlist exactly.

Why change anything at KTU now? They're performing well.

I think WCBS-FM fans should be concerned. The higher skewing demos have to be an issue at some point.

None of you guys had the psychic power to see 98.7 get blown up... dont speculate on other stations..lol

I'm pretty sure Hot 97 is alot more edgier than Power. I hear alot more harder hip-hop hits and freestyles on Hot, Power plays it too safe and tends to sound like other urbans across the country. I also cannot see Hot 97 going anywhere anytime soon, same with Power. If anything, Hot 97 will just tweak their playlist like they have in the past, but I highly doubt they will get canned by Emmis.

If anything, it seems like Emmis have been selling all of these other stations to hold on to their flagship Rhythmic stations (Power in L.A. and Hot in NYC). Plus, Hot 97 is heritage too.

Maybe 105.1 could try a sort of Urban Hot AC format, somewhat like what WBLS used to be but with a stronger hip-hop gold component. This thread from last year describes what I'm thinking of pretty well. Just a hunch, but I think there's enough of a market for this type of format, and it would take listeners from both Hot 97 and WBLS. Plus, Power already is more R&B and gold-friendly than Hot 97 anyway, and the slogan "R&B and Only The Best Hip-Hop" would still work for this approach, so it could come off as more of a tweak than a full format flip.

I don't even live in New York City but I do listen to Power 105.1 and Hot 97 on my iPhone. I notice that Hot 97 does own the "hip hop" positioner 24/7. KKBT & KPWR in Los Angeles were the same way. The Beat played more R&B and Power 106 was hip hop (i.e. then Power 106 staples Ice Cube, WC, Kurupt all day). Power 105.1 knows that there is some good new R&B product this year. If they flip to urban ac that would be a shocker.

Well, KISS-FM had more "heritage" years on Hot 97, and that didn't stop Emmis from giving it away. Hell, even the original CBS-FM had more heritage and look what happened.

WFNX's last ratings book was an 0.8 in 6+. Their target demo listens to Pandora and Sirius XM, not terrestrial radio. Some "heritage."

It's not the 1990s anymore when one can listen to HOT 97.1 ,Kiss FM98.7 and/or WBLS 107.5 for their daily dosage of rap and urban ac.

In 1994 Hot 97 became the station "Where Hip Hop Lives". From then on it dominated the New York airwaves and hit No. 1 a few times in the ratings. By the end of 1994 both WBLS and WRKS had settled on adult R&B. Power 105.1 didn't even exist. I'm live in LA but I know that Hot 97 is the most prominent hip hop/R&B station in New York but is the most controversial station in the radio industry because of the numerous gunfights in the lobby.

They don't call it "Shot 97" for nothin'....
I know where "Shot 97" originated from. I remember former Hot 97 afternoon DJ Wendy Williams started came up with that name but that's not important though. Power 105.1 does play more jams in the late night hours while Hot 97 you'll hear Drake within a 10 minute gap. Their slogan "New York's R&B and Only the Best Hip Hop" means the more R&B less hip hop. At the urban format, hip hop is on it's way out.
