Will Burge, T.J Zuppe fired from WKNR

I wonder if this will mean a bigger role for Matt Wilhelm, the former OSU linebacker recently brought in as a Buckeye analyst...perhaps trying to make a Dustin Fox out of him on a revamped "3 Deep"?

Or maybe making a "Hooligan" out of him.

I think the Holligans show is done-not listed anymore.

Maybe as it was...Bruce Hooley and Dave Denatale did the show this afternoon (Greg Brinda is on vacation).

Maybe it gets revamped under a new name and/or a new supporting cast, but Bruce Hooley will still be doing the PM Drive show on 850 in some form.

Apparently Michael Reghi is gone too...his name off the KNR website. Lists ESPN evenings after 3 Deep.

During football season, WKNR doesn't really have to worry too much about evening programming:

Mondays - Buckeye Roundtable (OSU Radio Netowrk)
Wednesdays - Browns Preview (Browns Radio Network)
Thursdays - Rob Chudzinski and Urban Meyer coaches shows (Browns and OSU Networks respectively)
Fridays - High School Hysteria Game of the Week.

Plus some Monsters games, and the MLB playoffs on ESPN Radio come October, with OSU hoops starting in November.

They just may put off making a decision about an evening host until January.

WKNR has been lacking a truly solid sports talk host for a long time. The last really knowledgeable host who engaged the listeners was Geoff Sindelar. I can stomach Tony Rizzo in doses. When he does pregame shows for the Browns he is good. We do not get 4 hours of that stupid bell, applause and sound effects ad nauseum. The other bad part is the non stop commercials. I don't care about stupid JoeBees, or windows or what car you drive or food you eat. Those commercials go on for 5 minutes at a time. Stop the insanity! ::)

WKNR is trying to go from straight Xs and Os sportstalk, more into mancave territory. RBS makes no bones about it, and The Hooligans are following suit.

92.3 The Fan is more Xs and Os oriented.

I still think Joe Bee has a little stake in Good Karma...I never hear his ads anywhere else except 850 and 1540.

I don't like seeing anyone fired or losing a job, but I don't see the two younger guys being missed at all. I never thought Burge was professional and Zuppe was OK, but neither one had me wanting to tune in to what they had to say. They will be replaced by someone cheaper and willing to put in even more hours. They won't be missed.

Roda will be missed unless the station decides to put ESPN programming on at night instead of replacing his show. Wouldn't suprise me if he gets picked up by 92.3. He would be an upgrade over some of their current hosts.

Reghi is better doing MAC games than his radio show, so he won't be missed.

Hey Former Intern,
You don't know what you are talking about, because you prolly don't listen to 850. Burge and to some extent Zuppe both hosted/led shows on KNR, especially Burge. He hosted two shows, and contributed to Cleveland Sports Night on top of his Browns reporting. He was good, for I listened to him each night on 3 Deep. These dudes had more roles than most, so get your facts straight.

Agree-They could just have 1 person fill in a few days a week.

If WKNR goes into mancave territory I am out. I am not into adolescent toilet humor like that stuff on WMMS. Some of us are older than 18 years old in Cleveland. Have some intelligent radio.

Morning Journal is saying KNR is basically doing away with local programming in the evenings. They will switch to ESPN National?..Kind of a bummer. I don't mind the Mancave type shows, but Aaron Goldhammer is bad at that also.

Sounds like they had to pay for those Browns rights somehow, so cutting some staff was the answer.

Also sounds like they are admitting defeat to Ken Carmen and 92 in the evenings, throwing in the towel and giving up. I wonder whats up with the Hooligans and if Bull and Fox are crushing them.

And someone mentioned that "do they have to explain" why Goldhammer is still there. Whats the deal? Does he own a stake or have pics of Karmazin or something??

I think the story is Goldhammer's dad has ties to Karmazin? Or money in GKB? I can't remember, I migh be wrong with that. If Rizzo has part ownership, or pull, Goldhammer isn't going anywhere-RBS is still the best thing they have going.

engaged the listeners? Geoff Sindelar?

He was entertaining.

Typical call:
Caller: Hey professor I have a 1973 Topps....
Geoff: It's worth $53
Caller: But I didn't tell who's card it was.
Geoff: Trust me in Cleveland it's worth $53.

Bruce Drennan often played tape of Geoff reading a live spot for restaurant. When he started to sell the filet mignon, he exclaimed: and they have the best FILL-LET MEN-GOAN I've ever tasted.

That rumor has always been out there.

Regardless, Hammer has insulated himself with Rizz and Craig Karmazin, so he goes nowhere.

He's gotten away with stuff that would get most people fired 3X over.

When KNR bumped Roda & Reghi to nights...then later at night...you knew that sooner or later they'd likely be gone.

Also, sportstalk stations tend to be heavily network in many markets, with few if any live/local hosts. And, the mancave thing is the commonly-held radio consultant's favored style. They really believe "younger demos" want it that way. Silly is in, "normal" sportstalk is fading, sadly.

Plus, ad revenues can't be all that great. Again, typical in 2013 for many medium & larger market FMs...not to mention AMs. It's just a reality in many (not all, but many) stations. I really believe it was a weak ad revenue situation...so, they cut 4 salaries (if you include Reghi).

If Karmazin ever sold the station my guess is that Goldhammer would be gone the second the ink is dried on that sale. Almost quicker than Pat Shurmur exited Berea at the end of last season.

I like RBS, but I've never heard someone say "I, me" as much as Goldhammer-he's just bad to listen to-Rizzo can drive me nuts with his fake laughing and over done "wooooow!!!". I just thought 92.3 would be a lot better than what it is. I still switch back and forth.
