Will CBS Sell Vegas stations?

You probably heard that CBS is planning on selling 50 of their medium market stations. They haven't announced what stations yet. Will they sell any or all of their Las Vegas stations?

This would qualify as the market range they will sell off. I have seen on other boards speculation they will only keep the top 15 markets. Then again last time CBS went on a selling spree they made a point of saying they wanted to keep Las Vegas because it such a growth market.

Of course now Las Vegas is experiencing economic problems, more severe than the national slowdown. Beasley mentioned in their corporate report yesterday that Las Vegas was one of their down markets which they attributed to the slumping housing market. So maybe now Las Vegas isn't considered to be the growth market it always has been. The question is if this is just a blip in time and the growth will return soon or if we have really only just begun a long period of economic difficulty.

From a VERY reliable source as of 9:15am today August 1st, CBS Radio has put it's Las Vegas cluster up for sale!!!! Hopefully this will mark the end of The Morning Zoo

Sounds like someone in the CBS building doesn't like the Morning Zoo.

It's not my format but the show is more entertaining than others in the market. They have no need to worry.

Who do we think will buy????

It will be interesting to see if one company buys the entire cluster or if several of the companies in the market already buy a station. Afterall, nobody (besides CBS themselves) is maxed out with FMs here.

I would not be surprised to here that Cumulus will be buying the majority of the CBS mid-size market stations. Their business model is geared towards small and mid market stations. Cumulus has done well financially in the small and mid size markets. I think what CBS wants would be to sell most of these 50 stations in a package and Cumulus has the capital to accomodate a package buy from CBS.

A quote from today's Tom Taylor newsletter:

"... One savant says "Dan Mason says that in markets where they don't have four or five FMs, they will be sellers." They want a big presence in a market."

CBS just happens to own four FM stations in Vegas.

By the way, if you take the number of stations below Market 20 vs. the number of stations in markets with three or less FM's, the number goes from 50 to 41.

Here's the fuzzy math:
Atlanta (3) + Denver (3) + Hartford (4) + Minneapolis (3) + New York (6) + Orlando (3) + Palm Springs (1) + Philadelphia (5) + Phoenix (3) + Riverside (4) + San Diego (2) + St. Louis (3) = 41

(Yes, I think CBS would be crazy to sell their New York and Philly properties, too!)

Newsperson responds:

Citadel President Judy Ellis rudely told me a few months ago that Citadel will not be buying any stations regardless of where they are.

So who can be the buyers?

Will it be someone new to Las Vegas?

I will look for your replies.

Newsperson

Odds are they may not be sold to one owner....KLUC is really close to being sold already....the potential new owners...one current CBS employee, and one that got let go earlier this year have some backers.....this one may surprise you!!!....)

Why would Bob Proffit accept the position of market manager in the valley for CBS if a sale is pending? He calls Las Vegas "home" as does Citadel, his former employer. Hmmmmmm?

Maybe CBS wants to sell stations but is having trouble finding a buyer considering the current financial climate?
