Will KYOT Be The Last Smooth Jazz Standing?

radioguy39nj said:
Wherever CC flipped a station to Rush Radio, the format was built around Premiere's Big 3: Beck, Rush & Sean. If CC flips KYOT to Rush Radio, it's highly unlikely Beck stays on KTAR.

All depends on how much time is left on KT'R's contract with Premier. Given Beck's popularity on both radio and FOX-TV, the Buckeye Boyz think it's a no brainer that Premier elects not to renew with TMISU. Regardless of what happens, it's time for KFWhyEye to take over 95~Five.

I just don't think it will happen anytime soon. However, I forgot who's on KFYI evenings. If they can have Michael Savage (who has at least took a chill pill since five years ago-- seriously), they probably COULD put Glenn Beck on, too.

Again, where are the shows that don't target ultra-conservative males aged 55+?

Or do only some sports stations understand how to reach people like me?

Seems the only formats that draw more than flies on Ancient Modulation are news, conservative talk and sports where older males still hang out. But as seen in many markets, these formats draw better demos on FM and usually decimate their AM counterparts. No doubt both KFWhyEye and Sports 6~Twenty would attract better demos if they were on FM.

It's not an instant elixir. Remember how well KTAR-FM did early on?

You can't get a younger audience pandering to Seizure World, even if you put it in FM Stereo.

No...but you can get 40 year old moms and dads who lean conservative. Which gets you to the virtual center of 25-54.
And in AZ, there's a chunk of them, many of whom leaned liberal when they were 25 and childless.

If CC can get Rush, Beck and Hannity on the same full-signal FM in Phoenix, they'll do fine. If they can do it in time to hit their stride for the 2012 presidential election, they'll be huge. And if they could make the flip in the next few weeks (with or without Beck), they'd probably do well in September and October because of the midterm elections.

KT'R sucked big time when they moved to 92~Three 'cause they were still doing an AM sounding Toaster Talk format with McBland mid-days and Ted and Heidi reading news in PMD. It took the Master Blogger almost two years to get it right and now it's paying off. And as far as pandering to Seizure World, KT'R has far more advertisers going for that audience than KFWhyEye. The Nurse and I hear Network Ned, McBland and Michael Dixon pitching retirement and assisted living facilities quite often. Can't recall ever hearing The Nearly Bald One shilling for seniors or creamed corn ;D

They'll show within the first 90 days, with or without Beck. And if they're as creative as the Buckeye Boyz, they'd get Sarah Palin to officially endorse the move to 95~Five. Talk about a shot across the bow of KT'R ;)

CC owns KFYI. Savage's show is owned by Citadel, I think. Beck's is owned by Premiere, a division of CC. If Rush Radio lands on 95.5, Beck will be there. Why would CC flip 95.5 to Rush Radio and leave Beck on their main competitor? :)

Why have they spent years putting Beck on every other yakker in town? Why did they put Beck on KT'R at essentially the same moment that 92.3 cleared the decks of their last AM vestiges and went after KFYI with everything it had? Because, in Phoenix, CC is convinced that Beck is and always will be, at best, second tier programming. Something you air so you don't have to run yesterday afternoon's Rusty Humphries in mid-mornings or something.

Now, granted, most of us can see how wrong that is. TMISLC appear to see how wrong that is; they haven't spent the past three years building their entire station around the show for nothing. And maybe CC is able to bill better with their current "seamless" lineup of Rush and his proteges that they think they could by introducing someone who's more than a bit of a Rush-apostate creating rancor and disharmony in the full-power line-up (something they obviously aren't worried about with Weiner and the twelve listeners in the station's nighttime pattern).

Or maybe they like the idea of just signing a contract and letting the money roll in without having to hustle local advertisers.

If KFYI does go to FM, there will be changes no doubt. Beck didn't have a NY clearance until 2009 (WOR) or a Chicago clearance (WIND) until this year. Rush and Sean have been around longer. Their shows were once owned by ABC, later Citadel.

I don't think CC views Beck as second-tier programming. If that were the case, he wouldn't be part of other Rush Radio stations. :)

Premiere signed Beck to KTAR when he was on Headline News...his career and influence have exploded since he moved to FOX News. He's a much hotter property now.

I don't have much to add here, but to say I think BECK would be a perfect fit on KFYI. Not that I'm against Beck or his viewpoints or anything, but sometimes I do tend to skip around him on KTAR. He is perfect for KFYI though. I just don't care for when his show tends to "get religious" sometimes. Personally, I'd like to have Beck replace Savage.

By the way, I have a question regarding KFYI. Was KFYI always the leader in ratings, or did Newstalk 1010 ever used to beat KFYI? Back in those days, I wasn't too into talk radio, then was (re)introduced to it in 2003 with Newstalk 1010. Before then, it was WGST and WSB until I moved back here to Phoenix, where I got into FM "party mode".

It's been KTAR and KFYI. 1010 was never a factor.
