I don't know about you guys, but I have some problem's with WDTW's signal. I live in Royal Oak, Ferndale and it's very weak compared to ther channels like 955 987 or 963 for example. Maybe that's the reason it's not doing well
The likely reason is because you are a stone's throw away from 105.9 WDMK's transmitter. 104.3 with its 190,000 watts from near the I-696 / I-75 junction is likely wreaking havoc, too. I live about 4 miles away from WOMC's tower, and on my clock radio they bleed over 105.1, 105.9 and 106.7 if I do not have it positioned just right.
I am completely unable to pick up 106.7 cleanly at my office in Southfield. Instead, I get bleedover from 3 or 4 other stations simulatenously when tuned to 106.7, two of which are WKQI and WDMK.
The WKQI tower is the shorter tower right next to WDMK's tower (also used by Doug-FM). Both are just south of 10 Mile and Greenfield.
WDVD's tower is about 2 miles to the southeast along the north side of 8 Mile.
WVMV's tower is located in the west side of Detroit, near Davison and Livernois. Although farther away, there are no major sources of interference in your backyard, either.
So, I think your argument has some merit. 106.7's signal -- based on my own experience -- is awful in Southfield's civic center area where there are thousands of office workers. The far nothern suburbs, meanwhile, might simply be too far away to get great reception indoors.
Having their stick in downtown Detroit wasn't much of a deterrent with Country, because their signal Downriver, across Wayne County, and places such as Roseville was smokin'. They would fare better if their tower was closer to the 696 corridor.
106.7's signal also sucks near U-M Central Campus and downtown Ann Arbor thanks to interference from WQKL.
