Will the plug be pulled on STAR 100.7?

I've never heard of a contract with AFTRA and CBS that prohibits voicetracking. Please do tell more about it. This is the first I've heard of any kind of contract.
[/quote]

There are shops in the c.b.s. philly market that have prohibitive clauses in the current contract. I'm told that they are trying and succeeding in doing away with the clauses and making way for "talent consolidation". C.B.S. has been bleeding money for a long time and they need to tighten up the nationwide budget. How else will they pay for the outrageous bonuses and raises for the corporate heads? I can see LOTS of format consolidation and multi-market talent in the future for c.b.s. ::) They've already knocked our contract negotiations into the stoneages, basically telling us another 45% of the current staff will not be around after the next contract is finalized. :'(

Now, this sentence needs to be redone, as Jim & Randy are no longer.

Not to get sidetracked off the main issue of the new sports station, but wow, if this is true, I wonder who will be moving in to those positions at DVE?
I see they are advertising for interns on the dve website. Maybe they will let kids do the morning show free gratis from now on? LOL

Here is Smizik's closing sentence:
CBS looks like it's ready for the long haul at 93.7. The competition should be keen and the prime beneficiary will be the listening public.

Except that it deprives Pittsburgh, which has already lost its Urban station, of the only remaining competitor to Kiss 96.1.

To have three Sports stations, one CHR, and no Urban, does not seem to me like an overall benefit to the listening public.

(And while we're at it, how about an Oldies station?)

You make me laugh Parttimer. ;D You admitted a while back when you were trying to figure out who I was (and if I worked with you) of your friendship/alliance with Labrozzi. Now, you deny your "source".

Thanks Interested Observer for the CBS Afra contract information. Much appreciated. Makes sense that CBS would want to save money and use voicetrackers, too. Sad, but they'll do what they have to to save money.

To be a little more specific, yes, I am friends with Dave, but anything I posted in this thread didn't come from him, and he doesn't "feed me things to post." Frankly, very little of what I post comes from anyone, it's just my own spin on what I read, mostly common sense analysis as I see it.

I know one insight I posted regarding 104.7's Urban AC days was probably not known outside the flashcube but geez, that was six years ago.

So relax, I have no agenda, I'm not trying to spill any secrets or make anybody look bad. I frankly find it somewhat humorous that anyone in the industry cares what I say on some message board... And everybody still loves Raymond.

100.7 is 14,500 watts, B94 is 41,000. The metro is five counties and while Star is OK in town it lacks coverage in parts of the rated areas.

Again, if they want to do games they would have to be on 93.7.

Don't let that 14,500 number fool you. They're on the WPGH tower along with 104.7, and both their antennas are very high up. Its the same ERP...50kw. And I've never had a problem receiving Star in any part of SWPA.

And I've never had a problem receiving Star in any part of SWPA.

As someone said earlier, it does clash with 100.5 in Washington and Greene counties.

It was always fun getting the dial turned to the right spot and the radio at the perfect angle when I wanted one of those over the other.

Now I find very little reason to listen to either.

Please keep the fiber away Smizik, he is a much better writer when he's cranky. I loved his description of the Drive's obvious shortcomings.

whichever station gets flipped....IF one gets flipped could easily be called WFAN FM as they hold the WFAN AM calls in NYC....

i'm betting these rumors ( or rumours for those of a more uropean taste) are true.... :)

The simple math of the situation is that the older demos outnumber the under-34 crowd significantly here, so a CHR could not overcome that and pass DVE, KD, WSHH, 3WS and Y108.

What this means is that eventually, no one will be left in Pittsburgh to care about radio because everyone will be dead..he he

PBRTV has mass info.

"If you like B-94 and you like Star but flip back and forth, you will love this blended station."

If you like bass and milkshakes, but haven't been able to fit them both in your mouth at the same time, you'll love the Bass O Matic 76.

Bravo CBS, Bravo. I truly wish you the worst and hope this fails worse than that pathetic joke, 93.7 The Zone. I have lost all respect for CBS and it's a shame the staff of B94 has to be put through this again.

Once again, I truly wish the new station the absolute worst of luck.

Early coverage of 93.7 THE FAN indicates that current members of the B-94 morning
crew are moving to 100.7. This will give 100.7 a three-jock morning show and a two-jock mid-day program. Plus one each in their other shifts, plus what looks to be a lot of local host content (Ellis Cannon?) over at 93.7.

My initial impression is that there is NO FRIGGIN' WAY that CBS is going to carry all that payroll for very long. I would look for massive bloodletting at KD-AM and 100.7 as soon as this move fades from the radar a bit. KD-AM might go almost all syndicated to offset the increased costs of operating 93.7 (and that's before they've even landed any play-by-play rights)

Horrible news. :-[ The Fan is going to be a HUGE failure, folks! I can't wait for the station to flop and for Bubba & Melanie to usher in the THIRD incarnation of B94!

Sadly, I don't think there will be a third... I think that's all she wrote for the once killer B94...

Stupid. Absolutely moronic. Who is in charge over there at CBS? Pulling a mainstream format for a very niche format that is going to cost them more money to run? Show at least one ounce of radio smarts over there and drop that stupid STAR moniker from your corporate protected 100.7! Get rid of the one jock on there that sounds like a pepped-up Michael J Fox from 1985 and if you do none of the above - whatever you do please stop playing the same 10 year old "modern" a/c artists. We did not need to hear those Matchbox 20 and Nelly Furtado songs the first 10,000 times the past ten years - and B 94 fans don't want them mixed in with Rihanna and Jay-Z.

And be ashamed of yourselves for the B 94 that HAS been on the past few years. Did you ever even hire a midday jock? Cause every time I turned it on it was always a combination of liners and promos with no intros at all. If anyone ever came on it was so rare you might as well have board op'd the station! No offense to the current "newer" lineup on B94. It's not their fault but rather an industry that has NO farm teams anymore with all of the K-Loves, voicetracking and satellite-fed stations surrounding the Pittsburgh market. For any of us in radio, the version of B94 we had recently was an insult.

And what can we expect from CBS radio or CBS Pittsburgh in general? This management is responsible for a certain AM talk show host and a TV co-anchor of which neither should be in a top 50 market. The same management who couldn't wait to get rid of the Pirates who now WANT the Pirates for their pathetic attempt to lure any major sport to their corporate dictated 93.7 The Fan. Dumb. Very dumb.
