Will WIST Flip to Oldies?

I agree with both points. I know that the WIST-FM signal is very limited, and it would have been hard to come up with all of the cash to be live and local. However, I do think that they could have done a better job than they did with the Country Legends format.....

In the early 70's, 98.3 was WTNC-FM and was based in Thomasville. They would simulcast the broadcast of WTNC-AM during the day, and then play music after the AM station went off of the air. They had a mixed format at that time with talk shows like "Speak Your Mind," obituary listings, etc. along with music programs like "The Gospel Music Hour." At night, they would play different kinds of music on different days depending on who was running the show. One guy liked country music, another liked easy listening, etc.

In the early 80's, the station tried to make it playing pop music without live announcers as WEYE. That was the first of several format and ID changes.

Where do you think they failed?
If the signal was limited, and it would have been hard to come up with all the cash to be live and local, what else could they have done?
Throwing money at it that they didn't have?
Not finding listeners that weren't there?
What else could they have done to do "a better job with the Country Legends format?"

They could have gained bigger ratings by not playing the same 100 songs over and over again.

Oh good lord GTGO! Those same words were used when you were at Majic 941! It didn't stop you from playing the same old crap! How can you make that statement? Jeees!

Sir, I was never at WTHZ-FM Majic 94.1. I did listen to them alot and made posts about them, but I did not work there, nor did I program that station. I believe that Steve Fennigan was the PD in the final months. To his credit, their playlist did improve somewhat a few weeks before their demise.

Maybe they should have concentrated on serving the area the signal covers. Everybody in the market tries to go after the "Triad" even if they don't cover it. Triad this, Triad that, yada, yada, yada. On a good day they cover Thomasville, High Point, Archdale, and Jamestown. Go local, with live morning & afternoons and use current technology to fill the rest of the time with local info, weather, psa's, events etc. And some kind of music. Find out what people in the area want & give it to them. Would it be a lot of work? Yes! Would you get ratings? No, at least not enough to be able to sell the book. But they weren't getting enough numbers when they attempted to be a "Triad" radio station either. But, if you built relationships with local businesses, community leaders, municipal folks, and average people (whoever they maybe) you probably couldn't do any worse than they did when they were driving country legends 98.3 into the ground, and attempting to be a jukebox. The days of letting the music carry you are over, When I want music I have my mp-3 player, cds, etc. etc. Be local, local, and attempt to relate to the community. Of course it will never happen because who ever controls that little station thinks, "we're in a million+ market, (whether or not we can cover it), and we're going to get our slice of the pie. We're going to be rich and laugh all the way to the bank". Yea right!

Yes, in the 80s. I think it may have been black at night.

Then they were oldies. Then contemporary Christian.

The WIST letters were used in Charlotte by a station that played what they played next, after the Charlotte station's owner bought them. Some called it oldies, but it was the good kind (in my opinion). The hits of the 40s, 50s and 60s, with some newer AC, and newer versions of the 40s-style songs. Eventually the 40s were pretty much gone. They did this mostly by satellite and it sounded good.

I agree with the points that Triad Newswoman made here. I think alot of the rimes, "Triad...." an "Piedmont Triad"... are WAY over used! TriadNewswoman made great points about WIST-FM going after LOCAL smaller buisnesses near High Point and Thomasville. It is a buisness model that I have seen other smaller Oldies stations use successfully to their advantage in other markets across the USA.

I think someone is being glib, but I'm not saying who. WIST would do well to stay the course and keep it between the ditchews
until the first few ppms roll out to be sold. Anybody who does anything before that is marching off a cliff no matter how
much you love your oldies!!!! ??? 8) :eek: :( ;D :D ;) :) :'( :-* :-\ :-X :-[ :p ::)

If TC is available, I don't see why WIST has not snapped him up yet.
If only to keep someone else from benefitting from him.
Clusterflank WIST! Clusterflank!

This Tom Collins sure does get everybody FIRED UP!!! Looks like he burned alot of bridges-LOL!

You should know! You are the one that started this "media circus" about him!

No, that name Tom Collins appears to stir up a hornets nest anywhere it is mentioned in regards to radio. That can be taken many different ways.... No doubt that Mr. Collins has made an impact on the loacl radio world. Take it as it you see about it being postive or negative... but people sure do seem to have alot of opinions about him around here...

;D ;D ;D ;DI hate to disappoint all...but I have NO DESIRE to return to radio. I am going to join a monastary and reflect on the auras surrounding the Earth today as it applies to the Obama administration. So goodbye....good luck....and I hope that all of you find meaningful work somewhere outside of bagging food at Harris Teeter. God bless you all...and I'll see you in the next world.

Tom why was your stay at WBRF-FM Galax so short?? You were only GM there for about 3 months! Why did you rock the boat there (changing playlists, jocks, etc.) so much?

Uh!!!! Sorry, but that's not Tom!
Yeah, I wasn't fooled either.

This is amazing. One day I was in Thomasville looking for a radio station to listen to. I think WBRF had dumped country music for a NASCAR race, but somehow I ended up on WIST and while I couldn't understand what was being said, it sounded like a soccer match or something. I eventually figured out they were airing the Panthers. Then, JUST as I was passing a Bojangle's, they ran a Bojangle's commercial. And in Spanish, they say, "Esta ahora de Bojangle's!" It doesn't quite have the impact of "It's Bo Time!"
