WILM was off the air around 6:10pm

I heard Fox news at 6pm and the traffic update at 6:04 then made a quick scan of the dial and came by WILM and there was no sound. I thought maybe they lost power, but 1290 WWTX was on the air just fine (they're right next to each other in the CC Delaware building). So maybe this was one of those computer gremlins. WILM was off, that I know of, for about 10 minutes. I then was at my destination and stopped scanning the dial. I don't know if WRTX-FM (TOM-FM) has someone on air (in that building) at that time of the day to notice a problem with either of the two AM stations or if TOM-FM is on the computer too then. I noticed that WILM was back on the air at 8pm when I got back into my car to go home.

So WDEL isn't the only station here to have this type of problem. As I said in a different post, WHYY-FM has had some computer issues during the day a couple of weeks ago ( I guess after Radio Times goes off at noon they're on the NPR bird and computer).

It makes me wonder after AM drive till PM drive, how many radio stations in the Wilmington/Philly area actually have anyone in them other the WDEL with live and local talk/news, WPHT with their live and local talk/news, KYW newsradio, WIP-AM/FM local sports talk, and WPEN AM/FM local sports talk. Do any music FM's have any live on air folks after AM drive?

WILM was still silent when I got into the car after seven P.M. Wednesday.

WILM's carrier was still on, but no program content.

Yes....
Wilmington--WJBR till 7pm, WSTW till 12am
Dover--WAFL till 7pm, WAMS till 7pm, WNCL till 6pm

Thanks Jaydog for the info. Are you saying that CC Delaware is not running a live jock at WDSD and WRTX other than AM/PM drive? Or you don't know. It would seem the standard is AM drive till 7pm, other the WSTW which has someone there until Midnight.

I've got a question about WSTW/WDEL and them being the flagship for the Delaware EBS network. What happens if say at 3am when both WSTW/WDEL are on the computer with no one there, the EBS gets activated. Is that now done all via the computer (assuming it hasn't gone off to never never land).

I remember when I worked years ago at WNRK, that during an EBS alert we were supposed to have two people in at the station ( it was during my air shift and I was supposed to call the PD so he could come in too giving us the required two people). Of course back then we didn't have any computer technology so maybe that was why two people were required so if the EBS alert went so long, one person could sleep and relieve the other, etc.

Just an old school retired part time jock/reporter/talk show host wanting to know how its done now. This isn't intended as a slam against anyone, or WDEL/WSTW.

Mike...I use to work overnights at WSTW years ago and remember when they came to me and let me go because they had automated everything.
If one of the stations or transmitters goes off the air, then the system calls the engineer. The EAS is set up at most stations to take over the air and then play the alert. You can set up the parameters and times for this to happen. Example Eagle 97.7 on the weekends, if a Tornado Watch comes into the EAS then the system blocks out the music/commercial/or mic, whatever is on air at the time, and plays the announcement. It sounds weird when it happens, but that is how it works. Hope this has answered your question.

Thanks Jaydog. Ah all those new fangled high tech toys the radio stations have now. I guess its OK as long as the computer doesn't go off to never never land.
