WISX

What's your input in WISX (106.1 The Breeze)??

Is it competitive against the top AC station?

Would the brand be successful in the Philadelphia market??

Hard to say but WISX has been doing very well in the vanity numbers. Don't know what the meaningful numbers look like, though. But the vanity numbers are pretty impressive. A solid top-10 station and that most recent book was insane, with B-101 falling big time and WISX only a point below it. We'll see if that continues or if that was a fluke.

Ratings don't matter. Revenues do, especially for a company coming out of bankruptcy. It's all about translating listeners into money. With all the talk about older skewing formats, we need to determine if any of them can make money. It's probably too soon to come to any conclusions about the revenues.

I love the station....I listen to it a lot, the only criticism I will say about them is they should add more hit songs to their play list so they wont sound so repetitive with their songs ""I mean how many times can you hear wings beneath my wings or total eclipse of the heart" but other than that I like the station.

In my travels, I have found a lot of people listening to The Breeze. Almost every Uber or Lyft driver I've had since the launch has had the station on. And almost none of them was old and/or white. We might be surprised by the demos (if we ever find out about them!)

I'll second this. Every time I check them out, I'm hearing the same songs. You'd think it'd burn people out but apparently, folks are loving it so far.

That's what I said......they need to add more songs to their current playlist so they don't sound so repetitive with the same classic songs.

These are the songs that fit the criteria that test well. The group of songs they're drawing from is narrow to begin with, based on era and tempo, so there aren't a lot of consensus songs. This is what happens to formats like this. You end up with repetition.

I wonder how many songs they have in rotation at any give time. One would assume they're playing many more titles than B101.1 is.

That’s an interesting question. Each one covers an expansive time period, and chops one end or the other off in terms of “hard” sound. So total in rotation might not be vastly different, all things considered.

Repetition doesn’t bother me so much with 106, but maybe that’s just my listening patterns and the timing. For me it’s that there are definite tune-out songs that I just can’t stomach, mostly from the pre 80s material.

There’s also something I can’t put my finger on about the overall image/sound that still makes me feel “meh” about it. I mean, beyond the voice guy who just grated on my last nerve.

But most of their passengers are white, why do you bring race into the mix, I happen to be old and white and listen to WRFF. I guess if your old and black you listen to DAS-F or 107.9, according to your observations, SMFH....

Why do I bring race into the mix when talking about demographics? I think the more significant question is why this forum can't employ blocking by IP address.

They are almost certainly playing every song that fits the sound or mood of the station that tests well among the target listener demographic.

I really don't know of any gold based station that finds, let's say, 600 high testing songs that only plays 300 of them.

In other words, there are no further songs to be added that will not do more damage than good

WISX in an average week has between 400 and 410 songs in rotation. WBEB is at almost exactly 300 songs. The rotations are about the same, with WBEB playing a small percentage of currents and recurrents that rotate faster, making the gold spin almost identically.

Thank you for that info! It's funny how the mind works: The perception is that WISX is more repetitive than a station like B101.1 when in reality, it's the songs themselves; not the frequency with which they're played. One can almost certainly tolerate repeated exposure to "Send My Love To Your New Lover" by Adele better than one could "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones (a song which I personally wish would be banished from Earth for all eternity).

I have no idea what you are implying, it just seems like your avoiding an answer to my original question and just smoke screening the topic.

Let's put this sidebar to rest before it becomes any more personal.

"Demographics" as a term covers all kinds of information about a population universe: age cells, gender, ethnicity, place of birth, income, education, etc.

"Statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it" is a dictionary definition. A piece of demographic data could be "book buyers" or "vegetarians".

In radio, the key demos that decide formats are age groups, ethnicity and gender as those are the principal ones looked at by media buyers. These are also generally the factors that determine the appeal of different formats on radio stations. These are also the key breaks in radio ratings, for the same reason.
