WISX

The perception is that WISX is more repetitive than a station like B101.1 when in reality, it's the songs themselves; not the frequency with which they're played.

That's the problem with a format that doesn't play any currents. When all of the songs are from a specific era and are of the same tempo, it tends to sound repetitive. That's why other formats mix up tempos or eras. Smooth Jazz found itself in the same rut after a while.

Speaking of Smooth Jazz: Five years ago, after being a driver for about a millions years, I sold my car because I was (and still am) living and working in the city. Of course, with the car went most of my radio listening. Yesterday, I was in a Zipcar for a couple hours and after flipping between a few stations without satisfaction, I went to 106.1 and tapped the option for HD2. For the remainder of my drive, I listened happily to Smooth Jazz, as I had done for so many years while driving my own cars. There I was, driving (which I don't do anymore) and listening to Smooth Jazz on 106.1 (which I don't do anymore) with the same jingles and everything. It was a bit like going back in time. Then I looked in the mirror and snapped back to reality when I saw how many white hairs are now in my beard.

The identically named and similarly formatted "107.1 The Breeze" on the Jersey shore had a "No-Repeat Work Week" in which they did not repeat any songs from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday. At an average of 12 to 13 songs per hour, that's around 500 songs. But they played a lot more '60s music than WISX does now.

The last ratings survey period sure wasn't friendly to B101. Hopefully that is nothing more than a blip.

What really has caught my attention, though, is the three book trend for WTDY. Their numbers are tanking!
