With "Jammin 103.1" gone, "102.3 The Beat" should be dayparted

Given that "Jammin' 103.1" was supposed to come back on the air - only for CC to double decide and keep "I Heart Austin" on permanently instead, the second incarnation of "Jammin" only lasted TEN MONTHS. I was thinking that CC should look at dayparting "102.3 The Beat". Having two types of rhythmics being co-owned (one CHR, the other AC or oldies) is not too common unlike mainstream urban/urban ac couplets, and Austin is basically the worst market for any rhythmic format (think KQBT and KXBT), whether it be CHR, AC or oldies. I was thinking "The Beat" can expand its selection and sprinkle in songs that Jammin used to play, mostly as far back as the 80s and 90s primarily during the day. Play a 90s old school hip hop and/or R&B song, two 00s songs and the rest regular per hour. CC Austin can look at other rhythmics that do this, like sister KGGI in Riverside or KVEG in Las Vegas.

To be honest, at first I didn't like the idea, but now the beat is playing more dance top 40 remixes, and hip hop. I actually listen to them more now.

Austin is just such a weird market to me. I know Austin is eclectic and values their difference, but the radio market seems way too "avante garde" to me. There are tons of mainstream type holes, while you have formats like AAA, non-com AAA, Americana/Tx music, Indie, etc. all over the market. Granted, I visit often & don't live there, but I find it hard to imagine that these fringe formats actually make more money than some of the more mainstream formats could. Anyway, it always amazes me that everytime there's a change in the market, that it's always on the eclectic end of the spectrum.

I think what you are suggesting is a format tweak, and not dayparting. Isn't dayparting like Jammin's last run on 105.9 before the flip to 105.9 The Beat? Stations don't usually daypart anymore unless they are in the process of flipping the format.

I would like to see the beat remove some of the top 40 tracks and put more dance tracks in, maybe even a after hours mix show like 98.5 the beat does in SA.

Yes. I remember that period. On weekdays, it was like this: 1am-8pm with Jammin's music, then at 8, it would switch over to all-Hip Hop. On weekends, Jammin's music would be on from 1am-Noon, before Hip hop came on. It was really weird to hear Sean Caldwell doing Urban voiceovers. Of course, after the flip to The Beat, Dr. Dave did VO. I liked that period, as I didn't have to change the station. However, I knew it wasn't meant to last.

It was 1 AM to 7 PM then at 7 it would switch over to hip hop. Hip Hop aired from 7 PM to 1 AM on the weekdays. It would flip the same time, Deliah would come on at KKMJ. (I also listened to Super Songs of the 70's back then)

That wasn't necessarily considered dayparting. That was more like a broker-time-ish split format that Jammin 105.9 did before going hip hop full time. I'm thinking dayparting along the lines of being a full service rhythmic, just like some full service urban formats still do this pratice, like KTCX Beaumont, KMEL San Francisco and WVEE Atlanta. I don't think this is addressed, but just like the urban contemporary format was split in two in most markets (mainstream and adult), but I think the rhythmic format suffered that same fate when the "jammin oldies," "rhythmic oldies" and "rhythmic adult" formats slowly siphoned off the older end of its audience.

Re: With "Jammin 103.1" gone, "102.3 The Beat" should be dayparted

The Beat sounds more pop because they're now running the Premium Choice "WiLD" feed which is more pop-sounding. They're not locally programmed.
