With all of the vast amount of dead stations and freqs on the airwaves, why dosent someone brain up and start a "Oldies" format station. I'm not talking about bubble gum 50's and stupid car show - sock hop stuff. I mean just a great mix of what the 35 - 55 year old music and radio lovers like. Upbeat jocks - great jingles. XM6 has the cap on that but hey lets bring back the older guys from WLCY like Hewes - Morgan - Webb - Stevens - Webber - and all the other crazyness we loved. If it was a hit - play it - screw formatics no one cares but the PD and only if he has his ear glued to the radio 24/7. Talk about the artists - tell us where they are now.

what musical era or eras would qualify as oldies? 50s? 60s?....later.......if so, the Q is the only station that plays close to that. I don't think they do 50s music and the 60s is light except on sunday night when the fabulous don capone spins the classic tunes from the 60s.
The Q also has what they call 'super 70s' weekends, i just wish they would expand the playlist. I heard Mr. Big stuff by jean knight three times on saturday.

As for music..give me a bunch of greasy old soul records like the Delfonics, and the Intruders and obscure Motown like The Originals "Baby I'm For Real", and a dash of the great old Memphis Stax/Volt stuff like Rufus Thomas, Sam and Dave..and Booker T and the MGs..Then every so often toss in Petula Clark, and Dusty Springfield..you know the white girls that had soul..the over produced British hits..with compressssed strings and horn sections..Then get a remixed Drake AA package from whats left of the Johnny Mann Singers, and a big fat news intro that would go into a beefy sounding storytelling newsMAN telling the bloody details of the latest triple shootings...whew THATS RADIO! and BOND AUTO SALES would buy all the time there was

Love the Idea Jeff, You worked that area on the Old WLCY I believe. I workes as an runner for a courior service for a while and would frequent the stations What happened to Howard Hewes - Rick Morgan - Burt & Kurt - Dr. Chuck Stevens - and all the old high energy jocks from days gone by. All I know is Howard is in Georgia. Dr. Chuck was on the road with The Beach Boys and other bands also a once in a while shot on Q105 mybe - Rick Morgan ? - Burt & Kurt ? Also the old u92 jocks - Scott RIP - where is Al Cruise - Mike McLeane - Rich Fields is on The Price is right if thati the same one from here - Maria J ? Please give us a update.

Just flew in from Pittsburgh. The Post-Gazette says Porky Chadwick will have a show in our area. I am assuming WJQB as it is "Oldies" and wasn't the late owner from the Burg. I would like him on a better signal--------but Pork the Torque in Tampa Bay is like nirvana ( Not Nirvana)

Coming in from the TV board, yes, people over 45 do buy stuff, but long story short, they already know what they're going to buy. Young people, so the conventional wisdom goes, have fewer brand loyalties and are more influenced by advertising.Ferreri said:

My opinion the main reason that there is no pre beatles oldies station in this area is that there are so many spanish language stations here. Go to any up north community and you will almost always find a oldies station on AM. Look how long we had standards stations here. Stations like WWBA 680, (not 1040). There were many others. WHBO was the last real one we had here. If you want the programming now, you have to get a XM or Sirius radio. Fifties on 5 is great. They even have the Doo Wop stop on.... Ahh great music. I also disagree that over 45 cant be marketed to... As more and more boomers retire here, they will want to hear one of these stations.

But alas...... one day in July of 2005, was the "Day the Music Died" on English formatted a.m. stations in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
The new owners, Salem corporation had other ideas about what to program on WGUL.
Up until July of 2005 (doesn't seem like 3 years this month!) there was also WGUL 860 (which was AM stereo up until around May of 2000); WGUL didn't play doo wop, but did play many pop and soft rock hits from the 1950's to the 1970's; they never seemed to have trouble getting local sponsors.sbe1 said:

Tampa is not the only market with this issue. I am in the reverse mortgage business and an avid radio buff. The nostalgia format is best for us to advertise with but not one of the major markets have this format. They tend to be in the micro markets without a strong signal in the major markets. Ex: 640, 720, and 790 all have very weak sinals in Orlando. 1450/1320 for Tampa/ST Pete. I would buy time if they had better signals into the core metros.
