With Urban WAMO-FM/Pittsburgh out of the way, is WDKX next?

With Urban WAMO-FM out of the way, is WDKX next? PPM and the current state of the economy is like a music filth removal system.

Wow. Not only are you on the wrong board (there's a Buffalo/Rochester board), I think you may be on the wrong planet.

WDKX may well be the single most successful station in Rochester right now. The Langston family carries no debt, they run a tight, tight ship, and they have phenomenal listener loyalty that they've spent 35 years building up.

And unless you automatically equate all urban music with "filth," then you're really showing your ignorance here. The Langstons long ago vowed to run WDKX as a clean station, meaning you won't hear even heavily-edited versions of certain suggestive or violent tracks there.

Oh, and there's no PPM in Rochester, either - and given the size of the market, it's unlikely that we'll have it here for many years to come.

I think I hear the empty space under your rock calling you. Time to crawl back home.

All Urban music isn't filth. Maxwell,Mary J Blige,Chrisette Michelle etc is good R&B music. PPM may not be in the Rochester market, but the economy is hurting Rochester just like any other market. Im sure the owners of WDKX are feeling it also.

The owners should edit the songs a little more than they are. Maybe try not playing some of it. I heard a lot of bull on the station earlier today.

It kills me when folks white folks comment on black music and black radio. I think there is extra space under that rock for you.

Among the many things that you apparently don't know about WDKX is this: one of the big reasons it's been so successful is that it appeals to an audience beyond Rochester's black community. At least a few years ago, some of WDKX's hottest zip codes were in suburban Greece and Gates, far beyond the city's urban core. I have no reason to believe anything has changed in that regard.

Yet another thing you don't know about WDKX is that in the absence of a Spanish-language station in the market (possibly the largest unserved Hispanic market in the country at this point), WDKX has become their community station, too.

Of course the economy is hurting the Langston family. I'm sure their revenues are down at the moment. But as I noted in my original response to you, they carry no debt. They operate from a modest studio building that they own. I'm pretty sure their transmitter space is donated by Xerox - or at least provided at a steep discount. They've never hired expensive talent. They have no reason to change format or to sell the station, for which they've been getting unsolicited offers for years.

This has nothing to do with skin color, as much as you seem to want to make that the issue. WAMO apparently had financial problems that simply don't affect WDKX. To assume that there's any sort of equivalency between them, based on the music they play or the color of their owners' skin, is just silly.

(And if you're really interested in hearing from other people in Rochester who might have their own opinions about this, you're still on the wrong board. C'mon over to the Buffalo/Rochester board where we all hang out and see what they have to say.)

I agree w/ Mr. Fybush here. When I was going for my Communications AS at MCC in the 1980s. Mr Langston came in and gave an extremely thoughtful disseration on the state of radio, and the origins of WDKX.. (Did you know he named the station for frederic Douglas , martin luther King, and malcom X)
He has a huge investment in the community, and although I am no fan of hip hop, the family has done the utmost of carrying out his dreams.... A class operation in every aspect of the word!

In my book, WDKX has long been (and still is) one of the best sounding urbans in the country.
