WJDQ (Q101) MERIDIAN MOVING TO 95.1

I know a little about Q101 back in the day... the major reason that Q101 beat 97ALT was that Q101 was "hot". The station was tight on the air with great jocks.... and they owned the promotions in the area... very vividly remember Beach Bashes at Lake Okatibbee (sp?)...97ALT was smug on the air and very stale... even thought they did have the "House Rocker" on Sunday night... I listen to the Meridian stations a few times a year when I'm passing thru to board the SS Tungnut... I'm not really impressed with anything in the market. There are way too many bland stations in the market (both in quantity and quality). Assuming 101 goes country... can they beat 97.1? Sure, it's possible. But, someone in San Antonio needs to run the numbers here and see what the pay off would be.... unlike back in the day when you made it or lost it on one station.... today, in a clustered environment... it's about what the sum of the stations will do... so, by blowing up Q101 and attacking OKK... at the end of the day... is there any extra cheese in the drawer?

Me, personally... I'd love to see Q106 move back to the Federal Land Bank on Hwy 80 in Newton...

I am somewhat tied into the goings-on with this situation right now. The only thing I can confirm on this board is that several people have guessed right as far as what is going on. Who, and what parts, you'll just have to be tuned in tomorrow (Monday) to find out.

So here we are. OKK and Miss101 fighting it out for the country dollar in Meridian.
Sadly for the radio business, I see the advertising market taking a hit for everybody concerned. Instead of the pie getting bigger and everyone benefitting, if the Meridian management responds historically, rates will plummet on both stations to hold or pull advertisers, cluster against cluster. The typical Meridian advertiser, who doesn't buy numbers, will just go with the cheapest rate, and billing will be stagnant. CC obviously sees a possible tie-in for regional dollars with the Miss 103/101 combo, as they try to do with the Hallelujah stations. That hasn't been really successful, I understand. Holliday's negative publicity's not good, but Meridian's cliquey little community knows a lot of dirt on any business to keep the mud flying. Hope it's worth it for CC to go through so much trouble. How about making the product better where more listeners will listen longer,tie-in to your community to build a brand image, and make advertisers see the value of your product? Nah.....

I'm going to go with either FM Talk or Spanish on 101.... now, obviously I'm not in the market and not incredibly familiar with it, but based upon what others have said here and talking to a few others

I'm probably wrong so go ahead and criticize me...

The new 101.3 is up and going this morning. Debbie and Scotty Ray back on the air. My sources say Scotty Ray will be in control of the programming/music, the same gig he pulled at WOKK. Two country stations in a battle. Wonder what The Radio People's next move will be? Y95 is the old Q format.

For LFuss (or anybody that has an opinion) :).....if the rumors around here are true and you turn out to be right, how would WOKK fight the new Q101 country station especially if they have the #1 morning show in place that used to be at WOKK? That puts signal to signal equal on both stations. Do you think WOKK is about to get their tail kicked or think the Holladays will reach into the family coffers for a big money push?
What would you do? Will it be an all out radio battle?

How will they compete??? Fold up and go home. It IS true, Scotty Ray and Debbie are on (were on today from 6 till noon taking a ton of calls from people saying how much they missed em and how they didn't listen to ANY radio since they were fired (hardly believe it either, but thats what they said). The Radio People, New South, Holladays.... lost the battle... as hard as it is to believe.

Guess we will all see after a couple of books come out. Scotty Ray and Debbie, as good as they are, can't and shouldn't be expected to carry the whole station on their shoulders. Don't know too much about the other air personalities at 101.3 or if there will be upcoming changes with the other air staff.

Well, it's not like Meridian didn't already have two country stations. Clear Channel just never gave 95 the push it should have had. Now, Miss-101 will be their big dog and the old Q101 format will be relegated to second banana as Q95.1. That was quite a run... same format on the same station for 27 years (since June 6, 1979).

What's in the old Q106 building in Newton now? A crack house?

I think LF's old Penthouse magazines are still there... I was but a mere child.... and exposed to that stuff.

My best story was when I was getting 'structed on how to be a radio guy and I sat in with Jack Watkins a few nights... we put on a long record and hauled ass to the bus station down town to buy a pack of cigs (his).... and got back before the record was over... I was 14... and man that was great.

Heh... good ol' Jack Watkins. Worked with him at 62JDX when I was just a weekend part-timer. Jack had a great set of pipes - I always wanted to sound more like him on the air. Oh well... my radio career went another direction.

Jack was a good kid. Actually got him(and little tbarber, too) their jobs at JDX, but who's keeping score?
And TB, wait till I tell yer momma you were smokin', you know sweet little Jack wouldn't have been!
