WJJL to become WEBR

The lyrics to the Sound of the City jingles are admittedly a bit flimsy. With that in mind I took a couple minutes to compose some new lyrics that might better showcase the wonders of Western New York:

When winter descends upon the city
and the temperature is down to ten below
look for your car along the lake shore.
You’ll find it buried in the snow.

When summer comes to the city
And the humidity makes you want to die
The mosquitoes will come from out of nowhere
and eat your body up alive.

When night time comes to the city
And you think that relaxation would be fine
Gun shots will echo in the darkness
and police will be racing to the crime.

Hear the sounds of the city
whether you’re home, at work or in your car
For the old folks, Fourteen Forty , W E B R

Nice to know your age hasn't affected your memory yet. :)
We get wonderful therapy at The Home. Scrabble and checkers; call letter crossword puzzles. That kind of stuff.

Cave, you really ought to visit. Or maybe not. You'd probably freeze to death at 85 degrees if you've acclimated to Tuscon summer temps. Let's hope you get enough Winter snows that you won't have to worry about running out of water. BTW, the mosquitos here aren't nearly as bad as the sidewinders, Gila monsters, and scorpions in your neighborhood.

First day glitches not withstanding the New WEBR is off and running. Bob and Gail were cook’n ...I was feeling a bit more comfortable after an almost 50 year rest...Barry was Barry. We had fun!!!

I wonder if they sent someone to Buffalo to do the research, or if they merely asked the station for examples of things to mention:

"Faint is the thunder of Niagara, soft is the murmur of the lake." You don't find that humorous? If I wrote that, you'd all howl.

Faint is the Thunder? I thought it was the Mighty Niagara? The Upper Rapids and the Falls are pretty loud. The classic noir film NIAGARA featured Joseph Cotten & Marilyn Monroe. Spoiler Alert - It didn't end well for either character.

They did research for this format? More like an archaeological excavation...

The roar of Niagara is pretty faint in Buffalo, where WEBR was located when the jingles were created. The whole jingle discussion is pretty nit-picky. Let the oldsters have some fun. They certainly aren't going to hurt anybody.

A couple responses to Rox: I spent my first 25 years in and around Buffalo so I have a pretty good idea what the area is like. Southern Arizona is quite a contrast. Later this week the prediction is for 113 degrees. If it ever got like that in Buffalo people would be croaking in the streets! When it comes to creatures with venom the scorpions and rattle snakes are completely eclipsed by the right wing politicians who would never be taken seriously in New York State.

I grew up listening to the real WEBR back in the mid 1950s when it became the first station in the area to attempt top 40. Personalities included Bernie Sandler (not Sanders), Jack Eno, Bob Wells and Lucky Pierre. But that lasted only a couple years. WEBR would switch to a more adult type of music that as a teenager I didn't enjoy. The new WEBR has its work cut out for it. Programming any kind of music on A.M. is uphill but with that substandard signal it will be a real challenge. And the night signal barely covers Niagara Falls. They'd be best off plugging the stream. The decision to have live air talent will prove to be a big expense and it may be hard to sell enough advertising to offset the cost. That's doubly true when you consider that the target demographic is not sought after by many advertisers. If they get a 1 share they will have something to celebrate.

"Right wing politicians" in WNY? They're harder to find than water in the desert. You really are out of touch with your old home, Cave. The only thing right wing around here is WBEN. You've got to be around 70 if you remember that much about WEBR, so you're 45 years removed from reality here. You likely wouldn't know where to buy a good taco or hot dog in WNY these days.

If you re-read his post, I believe Cave was talking about Arizona Right Wing politicians. Western NY has its share though with the Chris Collins, Carl Paladino crowd.

As for this "new" format, it reeks of decrepitude...

As a kid growing up in the area around the late 50's and early '60's I didn't listen to WEBR very much. I was aware of the station however, my aunt and uncle listened all the time. In the late 50's and early '60's the WKBW playlist often had adult artists in the top 40 so many names were no stranger to me. Sinatra, Matt Monro, Nancy Wilson, and Sammy Davis Jr to name just a few. As I got older my musical tastes branched out beyond Rock & Roll.

I applaud the owner of 1440 for trying something different and I wish them the best.

WEBR the call letters carry a rich history in Buffalo radio and much of the time broadcast history isn't acknowledged or respected.

I've been listening for the past hour, I like it!

If you asked 1,000 people in the streets of Buffalo about the rich history of WEBR, 1,000 of them would not know what you're talking about.

It's great that you enjoy it. Odds are that very few people will ever find this station. This owner will probably not spend money on Nielsen, nor should he. This is like opening a Fotomat Kiosk(Remember those?). If he can keep it going, then more power to him...

The bad news for the owners of this station is that Mike doesn't live in Buffalo any more. So he doesn't count as a listener for the advertisers. He's just an expense for the station because he streams it online. They should send him a bill.

Well, 'bolt, if it doesn't work out with the current format, maybe the owner will bring back The Lake. Maybe he'll hire you to program it.

Geez, people, the guy got the station for pocket change and is looking to create something different on the airwaves. It's a niche format with a limited signal. At least the station isn't going dark, and a bunch of old-timers appear to be having fun with it. If you like it, listen. If you don't, leave him alone. Bill Yuhnke is fulfilling his dream every bit as much as Buddy Shula. The difference is that Bill's not on here (as far as we know) verbally wrangling with the flame throwers on here.

Good luck, Bill. Good luck to the staff. I hope you're having fun and you can pay the bills. At least you're playing something different.

Mr. Rox is so sensitive. Wasn't The Lake a niche format? Its ratings were at least 3 times higher than the current ALT format.

Posters here question the viability of stations all the time. WEBR may just be a nostalgia vanity exercise that doesn't need to be profitable. Nothing wrong with that. Let them have fun. If it's a business that needs to grow, that makes it much tougher...

OK, Old Timer! Enough with Jerry Vale and Dinah Washington. They were great in their day, but don't you think this station could stand to play some tunes by Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Harry Connick, Jr. and other contemporary artists from today?

That's a different format. These folks are about recreating the past.
